Fast Start Lifts WestConn Over Salem State, 18-3

DANBURY, CT (Apr. 15) – Sophomore Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT) scored two first-period goals, and sophomore Kirk Zachary (East Islip, NY) had three assists as Western Connecticut State University rushed out to a 5-0 lead after the first period and ran away with an 18-3 victory over Salem State College Tuesday evening at the WestConn Athletic Complex.
Sophomore Andrew Barbieri (Islip Terrace, NY) led WestConn with 5 goals, while Lanehart finished with four for the Colonials. Freshman Tom Begley (East Islip, NY) and junior Terry Stroz (Monroe, CT) each netted two goals for WestConn. Zachary finished with 4 assists to lead the Colonials, while senior Ron Pac (Glastonbury, CT) had three assists. Stroz and senior Jason Dodson (Norwich, CT) dominated action in the face-off circle winning 21 of 24 chances.
Leading the attack for Salem State were Luke Metraw (Chelmsford, MA) with two goals and Jonathan Falls (Seekonk, MA) with one.
WestConn wasted no time taking the lead when Zachary found Lanehart with just over one minute gone in the game. Before the end of the first period, the Colonials would score four more goals taking a 5-0 lead. Salem State scored to start the second period, but WestConn scored on their next possession and led by the score of 8-2 at the half.
Barbieri opened the third period with three consecutive goals over a three minute stretch to extend the WestConn lead to 11-2. WestConn’s defense and goaltending held Salem State scoreless in the third and the lead was 15-2 to start the fourth period. WestConn scored the first three goals of the fourth and when Metraw scored a late goal for Salem State the final margin of victory was 18-3 in favor of the Colonials.
Junior Kyle Wood (Hyde Park, NY) earns his seventh win of the season for WestConn, while Keith Hardy (Walpole, MA) takes the loss in goal for the Vikings.
With this evening’s victory, WestConn’s record now stands at 8-5 on the season (2-2 in the LEC), while Salem State falls to 6-4.
WestConn travels to Boston for a Little East Conference matchup with UMass Boston on Saturday, April 19th. Game time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
