NEW LONDON, Conn. (April 22) - Sophomore Phips Smith (Far Hills, N.J.) erupted with four goals to lead Connecticut College (9-5) an 8-5 victory against Western Connecticut State University in men´s lacrosse action played on Freeman Field Tuesday afternoon.

Kevin Nally (Ridgewood, N.J.) chipped in with two goals and an assist and Ryan Hayes (Darien, Conn.) dished out three helpers for the Camels, who won their fourth consecutive decision. With their ninth victory in the books, the 2008 Camels have put up the most wins for the program since the 2001 team reached the NESCAC semifinals in an 11-6 season.

Adam Lanehart (Redding, Conn.) provided a goal to go with his three ground balls for the visitors. Junior Terry Stroz (Monroe, Conn.) won 12-of-17 face-offs for the Colonials. Kyle Wood (Hyde Park, N.Y.) finished with 12 saves for WCSU.

The Colonials jumped on the Camels early, taking a 3-0 lead with a man-down goal from George Tsirigotis (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) with 5:20 remaining in the first. Nally finally got the Camels on the board with 4:47 remaining. The Colonials answered by putting up the next two scores. Andrew Barbieri (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) converted with 10 seconds to play and the Colonials had a 5-1 lead after one quarter of play.

Smith scored the only two goals in the second quarter and WCSU was clinging to a 5-3 lead at the half. In the third, the Camel offense got on track. Smith scored his third goal of the day just 1:06 into the quarter in an extra man situation. Jesse Stevenson (Marshfield, Mass.) put in the equalizer with 12:02 to play. With 6:37 remaining, Hayes dished out his third assist of the quarter, feeding Conor Malangone (Lake Grove, N.Y.) for the go-ahead score. Nally extended the lead to 7-5 with 3:21 to go, putting in his 10th goal of the season.

Smith added an insurance goal with 7:00 minutes to play in regulation and the Camels were able to hold on for the 8-5 victory.

Sophomore Mark Moran (Greenwich, Conn.) finished with eight saves for the Camels.
