NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA (Nov. 8)—The annual men’s soccer major awards were spread out throughout five institutions this afternoon, when the 2010 All-Little East Men’s Soccer Teams were announced by the conference office. University of Southern Maine senior midfielder Peter McHugh (Scarborough, Maine) was named the Offensive Player of the Year, while Rhode Island College senior back Corey Carvalho (Dartmouth, Mass.) was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Year. University of Massachusetts Boston freshman forward Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, Mass.) was selected as the Rookie of the Year and Keene State College’s Dr. Ron Butcher was tabbed as the Coach of the Year by his peers. Plymouth State University won the annual Team Sportsmanship Award. In addition to the major awards, the conference honored 25 student-athletes on the two All-Little East teams.
McHugh is just the second student-athlete in Huskies’ program history to earn the top offensive award, joining Sinisa Bajic who was honored in 2006 and 2007. The senior from Scarborough, Maine is making his third consecutive appearance on the All-Little East, first-team. A starter in all 17 matches, McHugh tied for the team lead in assists with three, while ranking second in goals (4) and points (11). He netted a pair of markers, including the game-winner, against Little East rival Panthers for a season-high four points. McHugh registered each of his four markers on the campaign against conference opponents to help Southern Maine post a 3-4 mark in the Little East. He will depart Gorham, Maine as the Huskies’ leading scorer in two of his four seasons, totaling 27 goals and 14 assists for 68 career points.
Carvalho is just the third student-athlete in conference history to repeat as the top defensive player, joining Eastern Connecticut State University’s Jay Barney (2006, 2005) and Western Connecticut State University’s Mark Pataky (2003, 2002). The two-time All-Little East, first-team selection helped the Anchormen rank second in the Little East in team goals against average (0.91), goals allowed (18), and shutouts (6). Rhode Island College (10-7-2) allowed one or fewer goals in 14 matches this season to post a 9-3-2 record. The senior from Dartmouth, Mass. also contributed to the offensive rush with five points on two goals and an assist. He recorded the game-winning goal in the victory at Husson University on Sept. 11. Carvalho was honored as the Defensive Player of the Week once on the campaign.
Galouzis is just the third Beacon to be honored as the top rookie and first since Jose Fragoso in 1996. The striker from Watertown, Mass. is also making his debut on the All-Little East, first-team. Galouzis made an immediate impact in the UMass Boston starting lineup during his freshman season—ranking first in the conference in goals (12), while second in game-winning goals (4) and points (24). His 12 markers is the highest single-season total by a Beacon since 2000. Galouzis netted his first collegiate goal in his debut in the victory against Suffolk University on Sept. 8. A starter in each of his 15 matches, Galouzis found the back of the net in six straight contests between Sept. 29 and Oct. 13. He delivered the decisive strike against Rams, Emerson College, Western Connecticut, and Rhode Island College. Galouzis turned in a season-high four twice on the campaign against the Colonials and Plymouth State. He was named the Rookie of the Week three times during the season.
Butcher has been voted the top mentor in the Little East for the third time in his illustrious career and first since 2001. Under his guidance, Keene State posted an overall record of 14-4-2, marking the 13th time in the past 14 years the Owls have registered double-digit victories since joining Division III in 1997. In 2010, Keene State captured the conference championship for the sixth time in program history, while also winning the regular season title outright for the fourth time. The Owls’ secured the top-seed and home field advantage throughout the Little East Men’s Soccer Championship with a 6-0-1 record inside the conference circuit. Keene State booked its 10th overall trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament by edging Rhode Island College, 1-0, in the final to earn the automatic qualifier. Butcher mentored four student-athletes on the All-Little East teams, including a pair of first-team honorees.
