Western holds on to defeat UMass Boston, 6-3 in tightly contested match

DANBURY, CT (Apr. 21)— After sweeping the three doubles' matches, including wins by Austin Werner (Fairfield, CT) at second singles and pairing up with Troy Pandolfi (Danbury, CT) at top doubles, the Western Connecticut men's tennis team had to battle to defeat UMass Boston, 6-3 at Westside Courts on Saturday afternoon.

Werner defeated Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, MA), 6-3, 6-7, 10-8 at second singles. Earlier he joined Pandolfi for a 9-8 (7-5) victory over David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) and Charles Lai (Boston, MA).

The tandems of Brian Bucknam (Woodbury, CT) and Ryan Klem (Newport, RI) and Enea Dervishi (Waterbury, CT) and Kyle Wilson (Naugatuck, CT) captured their doubles matches and the Colonials went into solo play up, 3-0.

Klem and Seth Shavers (Boston, MA) embarked on one of the classic matches of the season. Shavers came back from a one-set deficit to defeat Klem, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 12-10.

Wilson defeated Lyle Analetto (Belmont, MA), 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles while Dervishi defeated Himanshu Dubey (Lucknow, India), 6-2, 6-4 to close out the win.

Western plays host to John Jay College on Monday, April 23 at 4 pm.
