2007 Little East Conference Softball Postseason Awards

Player of the Year — Christie Lotti, Rhode Island College
Co-Pitcher of the Year — Shelby Slie, Western Connecticut State University
Co-Pitcher of the Year — Nicole Riley, Rhode Island College
Rookie of the Year — Magan Blais, University of Southern Maine
Coach of the Year — Bonny Brown-Denico, University of Southern Maine

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The annual Little East All-Conference softball teams and seasonal awards were announced this afternoon by the conference office. Rhode Island College junior first baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, Conn.) was named the Little East Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season. The Anchorwomen also earned another major award as senior Nicole Riley (North Providence, R.I.) and Western Connecticut State University junior Shelby Slie (Seymour, Conn.) shared the Co-Pitcher of the Year award. University of Southern Maine freshman third baseman Magan Blais (Sabattus, Maine) and Bonny Brown-Denico were honored as the Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively.

The two-time Little East Conference Player of the Year leads the conference circuit in hits (59), runs scored (44), total bases (98), and triples (10), while ranking second in batting average (.434) and doubles (13). Lotti is making her third consecutive appearance on the All-Little East Conference first-team. She ranks among the national leaders in triples per game (8th, 0.24), runs per game (73rd, 1.05), and slugging percentage (97th, .721). The junior posted a season-high 14 game hitting streak, spanning between April 3 and April 22. Lotti was selected the 2005 Little East Conference Rookie of the Year.

Riley, a two-time Little East Conference Pitcher of the Year, is also making her second straight appearance on the All-Conference first-team. The senior right-hander sits atop the conference in earned run average (0.82), innings pitched (186.2), strikeouts (207), and wins (26). Riley established a new NCAA Division III softball record for consecutive victories (43), putting an additional eight wins between the previous standard. The four-time Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week award-winner did not allow an earned run in 14 straight games, while surrendering fewer than two runs in 31 of her 37 appearances on the season. She reached double digits in strikeouts six times on the campaign, fanning 12 or more batters five times, most recently erasing 13 against Plymouth State University on May 3.

Making her second consecutive appearance on the All-Little East Conference first-team, Slie also garnered second-team recognition in 2005. The junior native of Seymour, Conn. leads the conference in saves (5), while ranking second in earned run average (1.01) and strikeouts (171). She is third in the Little East in appearances (27) and victories (12). Slie was nothing short of spectacular in Western Connecticut’s three victories in the Little East Conference Tournament, allowing no runs on 10 hits, while striking out 21 batters in 17.2 innings of work. She was also named the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 29.

Blais made an immediate impact in Southern Maine’s starting lineup, ranking second in home runs (2), third in RBIs (21), and fourth in hits (34). She also was selected to the Little East All-Conference first-team at third base. Blais was named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week twice on the campaign. In 32 games, she batted .366 (34-for-93) with 21 RBIs, 16 runs scored, and 46 total bases. Blais posted a .495 slugging percentage, while registering a .394 on-base percentage.

Making her third appearance as the top boss in the conference circuit, Brown-Denico led the University of Southern Maine to an overall record of 19-22. With an 8-6 conference mark, the Huskies earned the fifth seed in the Little East Conference Tournament, where they advanced to the second day of competition. A tremendous motivator, Brown-Denico mentored four All-Conference recipients on this year’s teams. She is the all-time winningest coach in the 31-year program, sporting a record of 294-205-5.

Rhode Island College dominated the All-Little East Conference first-team, placing five student-athletes on the top team, while Western Connecticut State University was just one off the pace. Joining Riley and Slie on the first-team was Keene State College junior pitcher Ashlee Nicholson (Swanzey, N.H.), while Anchorwomen senior catcher Kristyn Alexander (East Wareham, Mass.) was the conference’s battery mate.

Rhode Island College earned both first-team nodes on the right side of the infield as Lotti and sophomore second baseman Justine Burgess (Uxbridge, Mass.) gained praise. University of Southern Maine shortstop Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine) and Blais received recognition, while Keene State College sophomore Jenna Patnode (Surry, N.H.) and Eastern Connecticut State University Karen Taber (Deep River, Conn.) filled in the diamond.

The top outfield was comprised of Eastern Connecticut State University senior Leigha Abair (East Hartford, Conn.), Western Connecticut State University junior Megan Brunnell (North Attleboro, Mass.), and University of Massachusetts at Boston junior Katherine Wall (Arlington, Mass.).

Rhode Island College freshman designated hitter Mandy Shurgot (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Western Connecticut State University junior designated hitter Cortney Roymns (Newton, N.J.) shared top honors, while Colonials senior Megan Cirigliano (Newington, Conn.) was selected in the utility player position to round on the first-team selections.

Keene State College placed the most student-athletes on the second-team with three honorees. Senior pitcher Erin Fuoroli (Warwick, R.I.), junior second baseman Jessica Starkey (Keene, N.H.), and sophomore outfielder Allie D’Amato (Bristol, Conn.) each represented the Owls. Eastern Connecticut State University tabbed sophomore pitcher Lisa Cody (Webster, Mass.) and classmate first basemen Rachel Denny (East Haddam, Conn.), while the University of Massachusetts at Boston also registered two student-athletes as senior shortstop Andrea Ciarletta (Watertown, Mass.) and sophomore outfielder Jennifer Widener (Hyde Park, Mass.) garnered recognition. The University of Southern Maine capped off its selections with junior pitcher Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine) and sophomore utility player Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine). The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth earned its lone representative in senior outfielder Shannon Allberry (Attleboro, Mass.), while the Colonials placed junior catcher Brittany Finkeldey (Ivoryton, Conn.) on the second squad,

ECAC DIVISION III NEW ENGLAND SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

WestConn Wins ECAC New England Championship
Shelby Slie Named Most Outstanding Player

Bristol, RI- The Western Connecticut State University softball team remained undefeated throughout the ECAC New England Tournament when it defeated Western New England College, 7-1, in the finals hosted at Roger Williams University on Sunday afternoon. WestConn junior pitcher Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) earned the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award.

In the championship game, Slie, who finishes the season with an impressive 16-5 record, picked up where she left off in the semifinals, pitching an outstanding game, scattering seven hits and not allowing an earned run.

A strong first inning for WestConn, 28-13, set the tone for the game as the Colonials scored three runs on three hits for the early 3-0 lead.

A bases-loaded walk gave the Colonials a 4-0 lead in the fifth, but WNEC responded in the sixth as a Christina Farese (Marlborough, MA) single brought in Ganser who had reached on an error.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Colonials put the game out of reach, adding three runs to their total for the 7-1 advantage. Slie recorded one of her four strike outs in the seventh to help retire the side and clinch the championship.

Sophomore Loren Angiolillo (Wolcott, CT) went 4-4 on the day for WestConn, while teammate Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell Jct., NY) went 3-4 with three RBI and one run scored.

Sunday’s action included an elimination game at 10 a.m. between WNEC and Brandeis. The Golden Bears of WNEC used a five-run first inning to earn the win and move into the finals.

After giving up one run in the top of the first inning, WNEC took advantage of four Brandies errors while gathering four hits for the 5-1 lead after one inning of play. WNEC followed up with a three-run second inning, including a RBI double by junior Stephanie Ganser (Fairfield, CT) and a two-run home run by senior Jess Nelson (South Hadley, MA).

Brandeis managed one more run in the sixth, but fell by the final score of 8-2. Sophomore Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) earned the win, while freshman Emily Vaillette (Milford, NH) suffered the loss.

ECAC DIVISION III NEW ENGLAND SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Western Connecticut Advances To Title Game On Sunday

Bristol, RI-After four ECAC Division III New England Championships semifinal games Saturday, the Western Connecticut State University softball remains undefeated and will play for the championship at noon on Sunday at Roger Williams University.  It will face the winner of the second elimination game between Brandeis University and Western New England College, which meet at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The Colonials, 27-13, defeated Brandeis , 8-1 in their first semifinal game then blanked Western New England College, 3-0 to advance to the finals.

Western New England College and Brandeis each have one loss and host Roger Williams was eliminated with two losses.

WestConn faced Brandeis in what was a close game through four innings before it rallied to score four runs in the fifth inning for a 6-0 lead.

Shelby Slie continued her dominance on the mound, allowing four hits while striking out three in five innings of work.  Cortney Romyns finished off the final two innings and allowed Brandeis' only run in the top of the sixth inning.

Romyns led the WestConn offense as well, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and scoring two runs.  Brittany Finkeldey had two RBI and belted a triple for the Colonials.

In the 10 a.m. contest between top-seeded RWU and No. 5 WNEC, the Hawks got on the board first for a 1-0 lead after the bottom of the third inning. Junior LeEllen Lewis (Brunswick, MD) drove home junior Jen Lyford (Raynham, MA) from third for what turned out to be the Hawks’ only run of the day.

WNEC tallied two runs in the fifth and added three in the sixth to put the game out of reach and hand RWU its first loss of the tournament.

In the elimination game at 2 p.m., the RWU Hawks faced Brandeis, which recorded 11 hits in five innings. A five-run fourth inning followed by a three-run fifth put an end to the Hawks’ season. Brandeis freshman Emily Vaillette (Milford, NH) earned the shutout win while allowing just three hits.

Slie (Seymour, CT) continued to excel in the 4 p.m. game, allowing just three hits, while striking out six in the 3-0 shutout win. The Colonials took advantage of three WNEC errors in the third inning to register all three of their runs.

WestConn scattered four hits and Loren Angiolillo had the game's only RBI with a single in the three-run third inning.

Brandeis and Western New England face-off Sunday in an elimination game at 10 a.m. The winner faces Western Connecticut State and must win twice to earn the championship.

WestConn has appeared in five ECAC Tournaments and captured the 1997 North title.

WESTERN CONNECTICUT ADVANCES IN ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
WITH 16-0 WIN OVER LASELL COLLEGE

DANBURY, CT - (May 9, 2007) - Junior pitcher Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT), fresh off being named Co-Pitcher of the Year in the Little East Conference, dominated Lasell College on Wednesday afternoon and the Colonials belted out 14 hits in their 16-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Division III New England Softball Championships at Westside Field.

The Colonials, 25-13, will now face Brandeis University, which upset Rivier College in the first round, 2-1, at noon on Saturday.  The Championships move #1 seed Roger Williams University this Saturday and Sunday, May 12 and 13.  It is now a double-elimination format with games at 10 a.m., 12, 2 and 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m., 12 and 2 p.m. on Sunday.  Roger Williams defeated Fitchburg State College, 6-2 in their first round match up.  Fifth seed Western New England College upset #4 Curry, 3-0 in the final quarterfinal pairing.

Slie struck out 11 batters including eight of the first nine Lasers to come to the plate.  She allowed just one base hit, an infield single by Tiffany Perla, and improves to 13-5 on the season.  Slie raised her season strike out total to 182 in just 130 1/3 innings.

The Colonials, runners up in the LEC Tournament last weekend, raised their team batting average over .300 to .302 after scattering 14 hits over four innings.  The game was shortened by the mandated eight-run mercy rule after the top of the fifth inning.

Junior Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) belted her fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the Colonials 13-run second inning.

Senior Meg Cirigliano (Newington, CT) went 3-for-3 with a double, had three runs batted in and scored a pair of runs.  Classmate Julia Wullen (Bergenfield, NJ) also went 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored two runs.

Stacey DiMaggio went 2-for-4 with three RBI for WestConn.

Freshman righty Nicole Slader (North Smithfield, RI) took the loss and drops to 14-6 for the Lasers.  Jacqueline Losseff (Toms River, NJ) pitched the final three innings after Slader left in the second after facing four batters.
