ALICIA O'BRIEN RESIGNS SOFTBALL POST

After 17 years at Western Connecticut State University, Alicia O’Brien resigned as the Head Softball Coach and Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Women's Administrator earlier this month, announced Ed Farrington, Director of Athletics.

O'Brien has been named Senior Women's Administrator and Associate Head Softball Coach at Central (Iowa) College in Pella, Iowa.  She will also working with the college admission office as transfer student coordinator.
O'Brien is the wife of Dutch head coach George Wares. Combining O'Brien's career record with that of Wares (753-243-3, .757), the Dutch softball staff boasts an 1176-456-6 mark (.719) and 28 NCAA tournament appearances.

O'Brien leaves behind one of WestConn's most successful athletic programs.  During her tenure, the Colonials have gone 423-213-3 and made 13 post-season appearances.
This past spring, the Colonials finished with an impressive 28-18 record and appeared in their eighth NCAA Tournament.
O'Brien celebrated her 400th career win on March 23, 2006 in a 4-0 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene while her team was at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida.
The Colonials have won 24 or more games 11 straight seasons and for the 12th time in the past 13 campaigns (22 wins in 1995).
In 2005, WestConn advanced to the championship game of the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Championships. It finished the year with a 24-16-1 record to mark the 12th straight season to reach 20 or more wins.
In 2004, O'Brien led the Colonials to a 26-16 overall record and 9-5 finish in the Little East Conference. They were crowned LEC Tournament champions. The win earned them a seventh bid to the NCAA Tournament.
In 2002, the softball team completed its most successful season ever. It finished the 2002 campaign ranked #9 in the country and competed in it's first-ever NCAA Division III College World Series. It captured the NCAA New England Regional Championship held at Wheaton College in Norton, MA and completed the year with a 34-9-1 overall record.
The program enjoyed enormous success during O'Brien's tenure. From 1999 to 2002, it had four consecutive 30-win seasons, won three straight conference titles and appeared in four straight NCAA Tournaments. The Colonials, in all likelihood, would have made an appearance in the 2003 ECAC Tournament had the institution not taken a one-year hiatus from declaring it's eligibility.
Although having coached numerous regional All-Americans in the past, the first two All-Americans, Cherie Bailey and Sarah Zaslaw received recognition at the National Tournament banquet in 2002. Four Little East Conference Player of the Year winners wore Colonial blue (Kim Lynch, Shanna Fairchild and Cherie Bailey in back-to-back seasons). Three LEC Pitcher of the Year awards (Katie Manning, Stacey Miehe, Zaslaw) were garnered by Western Connecticut hurlers as well.
O'Brien was inducted into the Connecticut Softball Hall of Fame in August 2002 as the Collegiate Coach. Alicia is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association. She is a member of the NCAA Regional All-American Committee.

At the University, OBrien was a member of the Hall of Fame Committee and a member of the Wellness Initiative. She is also the director of Western Connecticut Softball Camp and speaks at clinics throughout the area during the year. She recently completed a five-year consulting job with the Danbury school system as a Title IX consultant.
After earning her undergraduate degree at WestConn in 1983, she went on to earn a M.S. in Counseling from the Danbury, Connecticut institution in 1993.

Union pounded out 10 hits against the Colonials' pitching staff.  Starter and loser Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) yielded four hits and two runs over 5 1/3 innings before turning the ball over to Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ).  Romyns gave up six hits and four runs, only one them earned, over the final inning and a third.
Four Union players had two hits.
Catherine Keilb (Rensselaer, NY) went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs including a long two-run single that just missed clearing the fence in deep straight-away center field in the seventh inning.
Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY), Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY) and Colleen White (Westport, CT) each had a pair of hits for the Dutchwomen.
Arceneaux had a tremendous game defensively, snaring three line shots back through the box.  The final one ended a one-out rally for the Colonials in the fifth inning.
WestConn finishes the season at 28-18 after making its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  Its best showing in the NCAA came in 2002 when it won the New England Regional and advanced to the Finals in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

WESTCONN ADVANCES IN NCAA TOURNAMENT WITH
9-0 BLANKING OF ELMS COLLEGE

ITHACA, NY - The Western Connecticut State University offense continued to pound the ball and Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) was nearly un-hittable as the Colonials blanked Elms College, 9-0 in five innings at Korstrinsky Field at Ithaca College on Friday afternoon.
The game took only 48 minutes to play as Slie mowed down the Blazers with nine strike outs over four innings.  The only hit she yielded was a two-out double to Lauren Stauch in the fourth.  She improves to 16-7 on the season.
Christina Scordato (Hillsdale, NJ) pitched the one-two-three fifth inning for the Colonials.
WestConn, now 28-17, had 11 hits against the Blazers which were eliminated from the Tournament with a 27-12 record.
The Blazers finish the season with their second-most wins in school history.  Back in 2003 they went 28-7 and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Colonials face Union College, the team they defeated 2-1 in the opening round on Thursday, at 4 p.m. on Friday in the third elimination game of the day.
Earlier action on Friday included Union eliminating Penn State Behrend, 5-0.  Ithaca and RPI open up action in the winner's bracket at 2 p.m. today.

PLATTSBURGH STATE COMES FROM BEHIND TO
DEFEAT WESTCONN, 6-5 IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

ITHACA, NY - Andrea Stupp (Bethlehem, NY) belted a three-run home run to help lift SUNY Plattsburgh to a 6-5 victory over Western Connecticut State University to close out the opening day's events at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Tournament at Korstrinsky Field at Ithaca College on Thursday night.
Stupp's home run was her fifth of the season and easily cleared the left-center field fence of Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT).  Slie, WestConn's winner in the opener earlier in the day, came on in relief of starter Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) in the fourth inning.  Plattsburgh added another run on an RBI single by Melissa Luciano (Stony Point, NY).
The Cardinals, 38-7 and the #1 seed, trailed 4-0 after three innings to the #5 seed Colonials.
WestConn, 27-17, took a 2-0 advantage in the top half of the first inning on RBI singles by Loren Angiollilo (Wolcott, CT) and Mallory Zenkus (Seymour, CT) of starter Steph Zweig (West Nyack, NY).
Two innings later the Colonials, who had chased Zweig from the mound in the second inning, put another two spot on the scoreboard.  Angiollilo scored after leading off the inning with her 12th double of the season off reliever and winner Jaclyn Leitze (Burnt Hills, NY).  She scored when Cardinal second baseman Shannon Connors (Brockport, NY) made an errant throw on Zenkus' bunt single.  Zenkus later came around to scored when catcher Keri Brean (West Chazy, NY) short hopped a throw down to second base on Romyns stolen base attempt.
Plattsburgh scored two runs, one of them earned in the fourth inning.
Conners was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  With one out, Meg Cirigliano (Newington, CT) threw the ball into left center field while trying to force Connors out at second on Kelly Bazinet's (Clarence, NY) fielder's choice.  Bazinet came around to score, two batters later, following a wild pitch by Slie.  Both runs were credited to Romyns.
WestConn scored one run in the top of the seventh inning when Brittany Finkeldey (Ivoryton, CT) hit an RBI single to center field, plating Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY).
Cirigliano went three for four against the Cardinals including her 12th double of the season to lead off the game.
Leitze improves to 20-5 on the season after allowing nine hits, three runs, only two of the earned, while striking out eight.
Kirby Davids (Brisbane, Australia) collected two of the Cardinals seven hits.
The Colonials face Elms College on Friday at 12 noon in an elimination game.  Elms lost to RPI earlier in the day, 8-0.
Other schedule action for Friday is #4 Union versus #7 Penn State Behrend in the first elimination game at 10 a.m. and #2 seed facing #3 RPI at 2 p.m.  The two winners of the first two games on Friday will face each other at 4 p.m.

SHELBY SLIE PITCHES WESTCONN TO 2-1 VICTORY OVER UNION COLLEGE IN FIRST ROUND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT

ITHACA, NY - Sophomore righty Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) held Union College to three hits in Western Connecticut State University's opening-round 2-1 victory in the NCAA Division III Softball Northeast Regional at Korstrinsky Field at Ithaca College on Thursday morning.
The Colonials, 27-16, will play #1 seed Plattsburgh State on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.
Mallory Zenkus (Seymour, CT) led the Colonials' hitting attack with two hits including an RBI single in the top of the first inning.  She belted a two-out double in the third inning.
In the first inning, Loren Angiolillo (Wolcott, CT) came around to score on Zenkus' drive to right field.  She was followed close behind when, WestConn's next batter, Brittany Finkeldey (Ivoryton, CT) reached on a throwing error by Union pitcher Abby Arceneaux (Mechanicville, NY) and WestConn led, 2-0.
Slie held the Dutchwomen, which came into the tournament leading the nation in hitting at .386, hitless through three innings before Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY) reached on a two-out single.  She was left stranded at first base.
Union, 29-6, would cut its deficit in half in the sixth inning.
Arceneaux reached on an error by Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY) to lead off the inning.  She moved over to third base on a single to right field by Alicia Gifford (Schenectady, NY).  Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, CT) plated Arceneaux with a single to left field.
With runners on first and second and no one out, Slie was able to induce Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY) to pop into an infield fly and caught Kielb looking at strike three.  Megan Kakins (New Windsor, NY) appeared to have tied the game with a drive to right field, but Julia Wullen (Bergenfield, NJ) was able to gun her out at first base to end the threat.
Slie pitch a one-two-three seventh for her 15th victory of the season.  She struck out four and walked one while allowing the one unearned run.  She is now 15-6 on the season.
Arceneaux drops to 15-5 on the season.  She allowed four hits, struck out two and walked three on the day.
The double elimination tournament continues through Sunday, May 14.  The regional champion moves on to the finals in Raleigh, NC which begin on Thursday, May 18.

Sitnik’s Three Hits Leads RIC Past Western Connecticut

Providence, RI—Top-seeded Rhode Island College eliminated fourth-seeded Western Connecticut, 6-4, in game five of the 2006 Little East Conference Softball Tournament.

The Anchorwomen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as senior right fielder Andree Sitnik (Lincoln, RI) hit a bases-loaded, two-RBI single down the left field line. The Colonials evened the game up in the bottom half of the frame on sophomore third baseman Stacey DiMaggio’s (Hopewell Junction, NY) two-RBI triple to right field.

The Anchorwomen took the lead for good in the top of the third inning as freshman designated player Justine Burgess (Uxbridge, MA) plated Sitnik with an RBI triple to left field. RIC piled on three more runs in the fourth inning on sophomore first baseman Christie Lotti’s (Waterford, CT) RBI ground out and sophomore third baseman Krystal Bilek’s (Fitchburg, MA) RBI single, on which another RIC run scored due to a Western Connecticut error.

RIC junior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits to go along with six strikeouts, to earn her 22nd (22-2) win of the season.

Western Connecticut starting pitcher Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) was saddled with her fourth loss (8-4), allowing six runs on six hits. She walked five and struck out two. Sophomore pitcher Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) pitched three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits to go along with two walks and two strikeouts.

Campbell’s Second Inning Double Proves To Be The Difference

Providence, RI—Third-seeded Keene State defeated fourth-seeded Western Connecticut, 2-0, in game three of the 2006 Little East Conference Softball Tournament.

Two runs in the bottom of the second inning for the Owls proved to be all the offense they would need. Junior center fielder Kathleen Gambino (Freeport, NY) and freshman right fielder Jenna Patnode (Swanzey, NH) both reached base with singles. They both scored on senior third baseman Sarah Campbell’s (Auburn, MA) two-out double to the left center field fence.

On the mound for the Owls, sophomore Ashley Nicholson (Swanzey, NH) kept the Colonials in check as she went the distance to record her 11th (11-6) win of the season. Nicholson did not allow a run on just three hits to go along with one strikeout. Western Connecticut starting pitcher, sophomore Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT), was saddled with her sixth (14-6) loss of the season as she threw six innings, giving up two runs on five hits to go along with five strikeouts.

The win stops a four-game losing streak for Keene State. The loss stops a five-game win streak for Western Connecticut.

WESTCONN SOFTBALL ESCAPES WITH DOUBLEHEADER
SWEEP OVER SOUTHERN MAINE, 2-1 AND 3-2

DANBURY, CT – Junior first baseman Meg Cirigliano (Newington, CT) went 8 for 9 and droved in the game-winning run in the first game as Western Connecticut State University edged University of Southern Maine, 2-1 and 3-2 in a Little East Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Westside Field in Danbury.

Cirigliano went 5 for 5 and belted the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning in the opener. She drove in Julia Wullen (Bergenfield, NJ) who had reach on an error by Southern Maine's pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, ME). Cirigliano, who is batting a team-leading .383 on the season, followed that performance by going 3 for 4 and scoring a run in the nightcap.

In the opener, Southern Maine scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning when Mallory Zenkus (Seymour, CT) was unable to corral a fly ball with the bases loaded. The infield fly was not invoked and Sabrina Mills (Westford, MA) raced home from third base. Mills opened the game with a double to left center and moved over to third on a single by Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, ME).

WestConn knotted the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell, Jct., NY) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on another fielder's choice. She came around to score on a RBI single by Brittany Finkeldey (Ivoryton, CT).

Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) improved to 14-5 after allowing just five hits and an unearned run. She struck out 12 and walked three.

Mainville drops to 8-7 on the year after scattering 11 hits, striking out seven and walking one.

In the nightcap, DiMaggio had two hits including the game-winning single to right center field in the bottom of the seventh inning. Meg Brunell (North Attleboro, MA) scored the unearned run after reaching on an error by right fielder Caitlin Stivaletta (Wells, ME) with one out. Brunell moved to third on back-to-back singles by Cirigliano and Kristen Lugovich (West Haven, CT) then scored on DiMaggio's long single.

In the nightcap, Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) earned the victory after coming on in relief of Christina Scordato (Hillsdale, NJ) in the third inning. Romyns improves to 8-3 on the season after allowing just two hits and striking out a pair over five innings.

Mills went 2 for 3 to lead the Huskies, now 19-17 overall and 8-6 in the LEC.

Bre Loon (Jay, ME) took the heart-breaking loss after allowing nine hits and three unearned runs and striking out one. She drops to 10-6 on the year.

The Little East Conference Tournament begins on Thursday, May 4 at top seed Rhode Island College. Pairing and game times will be finalized on Monday morning. WestConn, 26-14 overall and 9-5 in the LEC, has secured the fourth seed for the double-elimination tournament. The number four seed plays number three, either Keene State or Eastern Connecticut in the third game of Thursday's action.

RILEY SETS RIC RECORD AS ANCHORWOMEN SWEEP
Junior Pitcher Establishes New RIC Record For Single-Season Wins

Providence, RI—Rhode Island College has now won eight consecutive games and is unbeaten in its last 16 contests as the Anchorwomen took two games from Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut, 6-2 and 1-0, in collegiate softball action on Tuesday afternoon. RIC is two wins shy of tying the program record for wins (28) in a season with four regular season games remaining on the schedule.

In game one, the Anchorwomen scored three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back on the way to a 6-2 victory. That would be all the run support RIC junior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) would need to record her 18th (18-2) win of the season.
