WESTFIELD - The Westfield State women’s swimming and diving team  coasted to a 142-110 victory over Western Connecticut State in its  final home meet on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Westfield’s record is 7-2 heading into its regular season finale next  Wednesday at Regis College. Western Connecticut ends its dual meet  season with a 3-8 record.

Finishing first for Westfield were: Cairsten Beanland (1000 freestyle),  Lindsay Hryniewich (200 freestyle), Lindsey Malboeuf (50 backstroke),  Tiffany Moreno (50 freestyle), and Kara Phelan (100 backstroke).

Sophomore Francesca Testa (Cheshire, CT) and freshman Megan Dyson  (Farmington) both won three events for Western Connecticut. Testa took  first in the 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, and the 50 butterfly. Dyson  won the 50 breastroke, 100 breaststroke, and the 200 individual medley.

DANBURY, CT (Feb. 1) -  Sophomore Francesca Testa (Cheshire, CT) captured first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.73 and the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:08.00. Freshman Megan Dyson (Farmington, CT) was also a double winner for the Colonials with a winning time of 32.54 in the 50-yard breaststroke and 1:10.57 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Kelly Welsh was the only double winner for Sacred Heart with first place finishes in the 50-yard backstroke (32.56) and the 50-yard butterfly (31.75). Welsh also swam the lead-off leg of the Pioneers’ victorious 200-yard medley relay.

Sacred Heart’s other individual winners were Johanna Kos (Feeding Hills, MA) in the 400-yard individual medley (4:43.83), Molly McDonald (Sag Harbor, NY) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.96), Jacqueline Sweeney (Rockville Center, NY) in the 50-yard freestyle (28.17), Katie Marshall (Cumberland, RI) in the 100-yard freestyle (58.33), Adriana Morgan (Poughkeepsie, NY) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:35.66), and Taylor Sullivan (Stoughton, MA) in the 100-yard individual medley (1:06.85).

WestConn’s final dual meet for the 2007-08 season will be at Westfield State College on Saturday, February 2nd. The meet is slated to begin at 1:00pm.
 
 

Western Connecticut at Eastern Connecticut

WILLIMANTIC, CT (Jan. 26, 2008) -  Eastern Connecticut State University women's swimming and diving team defeated WestConn, 108-68 in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon.

First-place finishes by the Colonials included Mary Sobieski in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:36.28 and Megan Dyson's 33.11 time in the 50-yard breaststroke.

WestConn captured the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 2:02.61 time.  Kim Ostuno, Kelly Wight, Sobieski and Kate Veccharelli combined in the meet's final event.

 

WestConn Finish Second in Tri-Meet

Purchase, NY (Jan. 25, 2008) — The Western Connecticut State University women’s swim team finished second in a Friday night in a triangular meet with visiting Hunter College and host Purchase College.

Hunter took first with 125 points. Western Connecticut finished second with 80 and Purchase totaled 43 points.

The Colonials were paced by Megan Dyson, Mary Sobieski and Francesca Testa.

For Purchase, Jessica Brothers, Dana Tandoi and Kimberly Garrett  performed well for the Panthers. 

Hunter was led by Heather Alvord, who had three first-place finishes on the evening. Allyshia West, Anna Plaunova and Niki Hracs also swam well for the Hawks.

Western Connecticut Edges MSMC in Women’s Swimming

Newburgh, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2008) - Despite having only seven swimmers on their active roster, the Western Connecticut State University women’s swimming team defeated Mount Saint Mary College, 100-87, in the Kaplan Center pool Thursday night. The Colonials moved to 2-4 on the season while the Blue Knights fell back to 6-6.

WCSU won six of the nine individual events and received a very strong performance from freshman Megan Dyson (Farmington, Conn.). Dyson took home first place points in all three of her events, including the 200-yard freestyle (2:13.03), the 500-yard freestyle (6:07.93), and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.13). She finished more than seven seconds ahead of her nearest competitor in each of the events.

Freshman Kim Otsuno (Prospect, Conn.) also had a nice night for the Colonials, winning the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:04.15 and the 50-yard freestyle in 28.12.

For the Blue Knights, sophomore Annie Parodi (Warwick, N.Y.) was a double-winner, placing first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:29.85) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.80). Junior Caitlin McDonough (Verona, N.J.) prevailed in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:17.08.

Mount Saint Mary is back in action this weekend as they travel to Baruch College in New York, N.Y. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. Western Connecticut hosts the University of Bridgeport on Friday, January 18 beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Rookie Swimmer of the Week:
Megan Dyson (Farmington, Conn.), Freshman, Western Connecticut State University

Dyson continued to pace Western Connecticut State University this past week, capturing five individual championships and breaking her own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke. She picked up three victories against Western New England College, winning the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke races and 100-yard individual medley. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Dyson broke her own school record, touching in at 1:11.23. She capped her week off with two victories against Mount Holyoke.
 
MT. HOLYOKE CRUISES TO VICTORY OVER WESTCONN, 149-118

DANBURY, CT (Nov. 17) – Sophomore Francesca Testa (Cheshire, CT) and Freshman Megan Dyson (Farmington, CT) each won two individual events for Western Connecticut State University, but it wasn't enough to prevent Mt. Holyoke from swimming away with a 149-118 victory Saturday afternoon at the O'Neill Center Pool.  Testa and Dyson also joined teammates Kari Piedescalzo (Cheshire, CT) and Kim Ostuno (Prospect, CT) to win the meet's opening event, the 400-yard medley relay.

Mt. Holyoke had a pair of three-time winners as Amanda McGrosky (Southampton, PA) took first-place in the 1000-yard freestyle (12:39.45), 50-yard backstroke (35.87), and the 500-yard freestyle (6:10.63) and Grace Bauer (Oakdale, CT) captured the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.51), 100-yard freestyle (58.69), and 50-yard butterfly (27.91)

Meredith Bartelstein (Glencoe, IL) took both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events for Mt. Holyoke with scores of 231.67 and 234.75 respectively.  Mt Holyoke’s other individual winners were Alexandra de Rivera (Northridge, CA) in the 50-yard breaststroke (37.15) and Carol Stafford (Mukilteo, WA) in the 50-yard freestyle (28.84).

Mt. Holyoke’s dual-meet record now stands at 1-1 on the season, while the Colonials fall to 1-3.

WestConn’s next competition will be at the Little East Conference Meet, hosted by UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, December 1st. The meet is slated to begin at 11:00am.
 

 
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND SPRINTS PAST WESTCONN, 125-120

DANBURY, CT (Nov. 16) – Freshman Megan Dyson (Farmington, CT) won three individual events, including an all-time WestConn record time of 1:11.23 in the 100-yard breaststroke, but the Colonials couldn't hold off a late charge by New England College and fell 125-120 Friday night at the O'Neill Center Pool.  Dyson’s other individual victories came in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:42.02) and 100-yard IM (1:09.34), while also collecting a victory on the winning 200-yard medley relay.

Western New England's Krista Goulet (Saco, ME) won the 400-yard IM (5:26.47), 50-yard freestyle (28.97), and the 200-yard backstroke (2:28.51) for the Golden Bears, but it was her team's victory in the meet's final event that determined the outcome of the meet.  With WestConn leading by two points, Goulet anchored the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay to secure the win for Western New England.

Also scoring individual victories for WestConn were sophomore Francesca Testa (Cheshire, CT) in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.21) and 200-yard butterfly (2:24.93), and freshman Kari Piedescalzo (Cheshire, CT) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:17.05).

Western New England's other individual wins were scored by Aimee Smachetti (Bristol, CT) in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.24) and Tiffany Santilli (Southbridge, MA) in the 500-yard freestyle (6:07.75).

Western New England’s dual-meet record now stands at 2-1 on the season, while the Colonials fall to 1-2.  WestConn’s next dual-meet is Saturday, November 17, against Mount Holyoke at the O'Neill Center Pool. Starting time is slated for 1:00pm.

 

Rookie Swimmer of the Week:
Megan Dyson (Farmington, Conn.), Freshman, Western Connecticut State University

On Nov. 10, Dyson led Western Connecticut to its first victory of the season, breaking a pair of school records against St. Joseph’s College. The Farmington, Conn. native set a new Colonial standard in the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststrokes with times of 34.20 and 1:12.41, respectively. Dyson was also a memter of the winning 400-meter freestyle relay team, while placing second in the 200-meter individual medley.

ELMS COLLEGE DOWNS WESTERN CONNECTICUT, 114-80

CHICOPEE, MA, Nov. 9, 2007 – Elms College sophomore Liz Walker (Holyoke, MA) and senior Kaity Jo Bryll (East Hartland, CT) both earned a pair of first place finishes to help lead the Blazers to a 114-80 victory over Western Connecticut State University in Friday night’s women’s swimming dual meet at Partyka Natatorium.

With the victory Elms College moves to a record of 2-1 while the loss drops the Colonials to a mark of 0-1.

Walker clocked a new school record in the 100 meter individual medley finishing with a time of 1:15.11. Walker’s other first place finish came in the 100 meter breaststroke at a time of 1:20.11. Bryll earned a first place finishes in the 200 meter freestyle and 100 meter freestyle with times of 2:30.77 and 1:07.67, respectively.

Walker and Bryll teamed with sophomore Marie Waterhouse (East Longmeadow, MA) and junior Kate Orefice (Southington, CT) to win the 200 meter medley relay at a time of 2:14.25.

Western Connecticut sophomore Francesca Testa (Cheshire, CT) and freshman Karissa Piedescalzo (Cheshire, CT) both earned first place finishes for the Colonials. Testa placed first in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:14.33 and Piedescalzo clocked a winning time of 5:27.48 in the 400 meter freestyle.
