Western softball comes back to salvage split with Plymouth State

DANBURY, CT (Apr. 7) — After dropping the opener, 7-4, the Western Connecticut State University pounded out 12 hits and defeated Plymouth State University, 10-2 in the second game of its Little East Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.

In the nightcap, Western, 15-5 overall and 1-1 in the LEC, was led by freshman utility player Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT) went 3-for-3 with a pair of triples and a run batted in. She also scored two runs as Western was able to finish off the Panthers in six innings, due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Junior left fielder Corinna Hussey (Naugatuck, CT) went 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and came around to score twice.

Amanda Rizzo (North Haven, CT) and Kylee Ruther (Stamford, CT) also had two hits for the winners.

Stephanie Moss (Brookfield, CT) improved to 3-3 on the season after going six strong innings. She allowed eight hits and two earned run while striking out nine and walking just two Panthers.

Cynthia Barata (New Fairfield, CT) falls to 1-5 in her first season starring for the Rebels a year ago. She allowed eight runs, only six of the earned in two innings of work.

Bekah Jackson (Nashua, NH) led the visitors by going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In the opener, the Panthers took advantage of three Western errors and issued just the second loss to senior righty Magen Dargon (Trumbull, CT).

Seven different batters registered one hit for the winners with Sam Hebert (Manchester, NH) driving in three unearned runs with a well-placed double down the left field line which gave Plymouth a 3-0 advantage in the top of the third inning.

Western took a 4-3 lead in the bottom the sixth inning when Ruther belted her third home run of the season of Nora Galvin (Windham, NH).

The Panthers re-took the lead and raced out to a 7-4 lead in the top half of the seventh inning.

Jackie Digman (Burlington, MA) double down the left field line to chase Jenn Bove (Medford, MA) and Allie Luisi (North Kingstown, RI) during the late-inning rally.

Galvin captured the win and is now 3-5 on the season. She scattered 10 hits while striking out eight and issuing just one free pass.

Dargon, 11-2, allowed seven runs, only four of them earned and seven hits while striking out eight and walking four.

The Colonials play host to Wesleyan University on Tuesday, April 10. First pitch is slated for 4:30 pm
