DANBURY, CT (Apr. 15) - The Western Connecticut State University softball team split a non-league doubleheader with New Paltz, taking the opener, 7-0 before dropping the nightcap, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Senior righty Magen Dargon (Trumbull, CT) improved to 13-3 on the season after pitching a complete-game shut out in the opener. She allowed just three singles while striking out nine and walking one.

The Colonials put together four hits and took advantage of two errors to scored five runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Melissa Fracker (Sandy Hook, CT) drove in the first run of the game when Christina Ferenz (Danbury, CT) scored on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT) knocked Kristen Ferrante (New Paltz, NY) in on Western second-straight sacrifice. Wojtkiewicz was out at second back trying to advance on the play, but Fracker bolted for the dish on the throw down to second.

Western closed out the scoring in the frame when Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) tripled home Danielle Basciano (Holmes, NY) and later scored on a throwing error by Hawks pitcher Meg Brewer (Bayport, NY) who drilled the senior center fielder in the back during a run down.

The winners added a pair of runs in the fifth inning when Basciano scored on an error by catcher Jenna Curcio (Conklin, NY) and Alison Russo (Danbury, CT) drove in pinch runner Amanda Rizzo (North Haven, CT) with a single to right field.

Brewer drops to 7-5 on the season for New Paltz.

In game two, the Colonials bats were silenced by seldom used righty Erika Traina (Bay Shore, NY). She allowed just a pair of doubles by Basciano and Zilnicki while striking out three and walking just one. Traina improves to 1-1 for the Hawks.

New Paltz scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning.
