Southern Maine Captures 2007 Little East Conference Men¹s Tennis Tournament Championship

Providence, RI‹The University of Southern Maine captured the 2007 Little East Conference Men¹s Tennis Tournament Championship and advances to the NCAA Div. III Men¹s Tennis Championships, which begins on May 4.

The Huskies totaled 19.5 points, taking four of the six singles and two of the three doubles flights to win their third title in the past five years.

Bridgewater State, which was in first place after the first day of competition, finished second with 17.0 points. UMass Dartmouth placed third with 11.0 points, while Western Connecticut (9.5) placed fourth, Rhode Island College (8.0) placed fifth, UMass Boston (4.5) placed sixth and Salem State (4.0) placed seventh.

No. 1 Singles Champion Third-seeded Bridgewater State sophomore Matt Charest (Somerset, MA) was the Little East Champion at No. 1 singles, defeating fourth-seeded Western Connecticut junior Wayne Tentler (Johannesburg, South Africa), 6-3, 4-2 (inj), in the finals. He defeated second-seeded Salem State freshman Adrien Malosse (Triel Sur Seine, France) in the semi-finals, 6-4, 6-3, and sixth-seeded UMass Boston senior Alex Roux (Beirut, Lebanon), 8-3, in opening round action.

No. 2 Singles Champion Top-seeded Southern Maine Josh Warren (Hermon, ME) was the Little East Champion at No. 2 singles, defeating second-seeded Bridgewater State junior Barry Gorman (Hopedale, MA), 6-2, 6-1, in the finals. He defeated fourth-seeded UMass Boston sophomore Paul Braude (West Yarmouth, MA), 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals after receiving a bye in opening round action.

No. 3 Singles Champion Top-seeded Southern Maine senior Justin Chaffee (Fryeburg, ME) was the Little East Champion at No. 3 singles, defeating third-seeded Western
Connecticut senior Colin Robertson (Newtown, CT), 6-1, 6-1, in the finals.  He defeated fourth-seeded UMass Dartmouth junior Eric Dusseault (Taunton, MA), 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals after receiving a bye in opening round action.

He defeated fourth-seeded Rhode Island College junior Rolando Yotharath (Woonsocket, RI) 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinals after receiving a bye in opening round action.

Seventh-seeded UMass Dartmouth sophomore Alex Samoiloff (Princeton, MA) was the Little East Champion at No. 6 singles, defeating top-seeded Rhode Island College sophomore David Haggerty (Woonsocket, RI), 6-1, 0-6, 6-4, in the finals. He defeated third-seeded Salem State junior Bogdan Suciu (Bucharest, Romania), 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals and second-seeded Western Connecticut senior Gary Buda (Windsor, CT), 8-3, in opening round action.

Bridgewater State Leads After Day One Competition at the Little East Conference Men¹s Tennis Championships

Providence, RI - Bridgewater State is currently in first place at the 2007 Little East Conference Men¹s Tennis Championships, hosted by Rhode Island College, with 11.0 points after one day of competition. UMass Dartmouth is three points off the pace, while Southern Maine is four behind the Bears.

The three doubles flight champions were determined and opening round action of the six singles flights were completed.

Senior Craig Spann (Redding, CT) and freshman Josh Warren (Hermon, ME) from Southern Maine captured the Little East Championship at No. 1 doubles, defeating Bridgewater State senior Matt Kelly (Tiverton, RI) and sophomore Matt Charest (Somerset, MA), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

UMASS DARTMOUTH MEN’S TENNIS DEFEATS WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE, 5-4

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Senior Josh McCoy (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport HS) won the deciding match as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s tennis team edged visiting Western Connecticut State, 5-4, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.

McCoy defeated Forrest Robertson, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to give the Corsairs their margin of victory. Junior Eric Dusseault (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) and freshman Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) also won in singles. Dusseault defeated Colin Robertson, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, while Ken Sims defeated Bob Miselis, 6-3, 7-6.

UMass Dartmouth took two of the three doubles matches. At number two doubles, Ken Sims and his brother Chris (Sr. Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) defeated the Robertson brothers, 8-2. At number three, Dusseault and freshman Alex Samoiloff (Princeton, M) defeated Joe Capelli and Paul Amado, 8-3.

“It was a great match,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. “Josh did a good job pulling out his match in three sets, and our number two and three doubles teams also played very well.”

The Corsairs improved to 2-4 and 1-3 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Colonials fell to 3-2 and 1-2 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Curry in a non-conference match Monday, while WCSU will travel to Salem State Sunday.

Wayne Tentler, Sophomore, Western Connecticut

Wayne Tentler led Western Connecticut to a 2-0 week posting victories at the No. 1 position. On March 26, Tentler defeated his opposition from John Jay, 6-4, 6-2. Five days later, he opened the Little East Conference circuit with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory against UMass. Boston. Tentler also was victorious in both his appearances in No. 1 doubles.

UMASS BOSTON MEN’S TENNIS FALLS TO WESTERN CONNECTICUT, 7-2

QUINCY, MA – The University of Massachusetts Boston men’s tennis team was defeated by Western Connecticut State University today, 7-2, in a Little East Conference match to open the season.  The contest was played in Quincy, MA on the campus of Eastern Nazarene College.  The Beacons fall to 0-1 on the season and the same in LEC play, while the Colonials improve to 2-0 and 1-0.

UMass Boston will be in action again on Thursday, April 5 when it travels to Quincy, MA to take on Eastern Nazarene at 3:30 p.m., while Western Connecticut hosts Post University on Tuesday, April 3 at 4:00 p.m.

ALEX AITCHISON RETURNS TO
COACH MEN'S TENNIS TEAM

   
      
Alex Aitchison has returned to coach the men's tennis program at Western Connecticut State University after retiring a year ago.  He guided both the men's and women's programs beginning with the men in the spring of 2003.
     During his first tenure, the Colonials men's program went 28-7 over four campaigns.  The women netters went 12-20 from 2003 through 2005.
     Former WestConn number one singles and doubles standout
Stacy Slater took over the helm of the women's program last fall.
    
Aitchison originally came to Western Connecticut after a lengthy and legendary playing and coaching career. 
    
He is the former Program Director and Teaching Professional at Beaver Brook Tennis Club in Danbury, Connecticut.  Since 1987, Aitchison has been the President of Tennis Consultants International, a management and consulting service for tennis clubs, associations, organizations and individuals.
     He was the Girls Tennis Coach at nearby Immaculate High School prior to his appointment at Beaver Brook Tennis Club.
     In 2001, Aitchison was inducted into the Newtown (CT) Sports Hall of Fame.  A year later, he was inducted into the Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame.  In 1992, the Eastern Tennis Association named him “Man of the Year”.
     Aitchison’s outstanding playing career, which began in 1940, is highlighted with two Singles’ Championships from Ringwood Tennis Club in Australia in 1963 and 1964.  He is also the holder of numerous tournament titles in Australia and the United States.  He also competed in the Victorian Pennant.
     The 1955 graduate of Melbourne University would go on to represent Australia in the Stevens Cup (men’s senior international team competition) for five years from 1980 to 1984.
     Highlighting Aithison’s list of chairmanships and membership are: the U.S. Open Junior Championship Committee, the U.S.T.A. Circuit Regulations Committee, the U.S.T.A. Olympic Committee and the U.S. Junior Davis Cup Committee.
     In 1977 he founded and remained Tournament Director until 1986, of the Rolex International Junior Tennis Championships on the International Tennis Federation circuit.
