Southern Maine Defeats Western Connecticut 8-1 GORHAM, Maine – Junior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) and sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) each gutted out hard-earned singles victories to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s tennis team to an 8-1 win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials Saturday afternoon in Little East Conference action at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine. The Huskies handed Western Connecticut their first loss of the season to drop the Colonials to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Little East. Earning its third straight win, Southern Maine improves to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in conference action. Warren and Stevenson teamed at first doubles to defeat the Western Connecticut duo of senior Wayne Tentler (Johannesburg, South Africa/Staples) and junior Matt Fogel (Westport, Conn./Staples) 9-7. Warren then worked his way to a 7-5, 6-3 win over Tentler at first singles, while Stevenson downed Fogel 6-2, 6-4 at second singles. Freshman Patrick Matysek (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) earned the Colonials’ lone point of the match at fourth singles defeating USM junior Matt McGowan (Waterville, Maine) 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in three sets. Husky freshman Adam Mitchell (Windham, Maine) prevented Western Connecticut from earning any other points in the match, however, earning a 6-3, 7-5 (10-7) win at fifth singles in the tie-breaker. Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (April 15) at 3:30 p.m. against Bridgewater State. Western Connecticut travels to Manhattanville on Wednesday (April 16) for a 3:30 p.m. match. |

COLONIALS SLIP PAST ANCHORMEN, 5-4 Providence, RI‹Western Connecticut freshman Pat Matysek (Ridgefield, CT) downed Rhode Island College senior Lorne Teeter (Warwick, RI) at No. 4singles to snap a 4-4 tie and give the Colonials a 5-4 win over the Anchormen in Little East Conference men¹s tennis action. Rhode Island College loses its third consecutive match and falls to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the LEC, while the Colonials remain unbeaten with a 3-0 overall record and a 2-0 mark in league action. Matysek lost the first set (7-6), but battled back to win (6-4, 6-0). The Anchormen held a 2-1 advantage in doubles action, but were defeated, 4-2 in singles. WestConn senior Wayne Tentler (Johannesburg, South Africa) and junior Matt Fogel (Westport, CT) won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. RIC juniors Eric Boffa (Greenville, RI) and David Haggerty (Woonsocket, RI) won at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
