Don Ferguson named Head Women's Volleyball Coach
at Western Connecticut State University

DANBURY, CT (May 11) — On Friday, Director of Athletics, Ed Farrington announced that Don Ferguson has been named the new Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at Western Connecticut State University.

“I feel very fortunate to hire Don Ferguson as our new women's volleyball coach," stated Farrington. "He has successfully recruited in Connecticut and the New England region and his head coaching experience at Division I, Division II and in the Northeast 10 and the America East will benefit our program tremendously.”

Ferguson becomes the seventh volleyball coach since 1982 and takes over for Greg Poole, who returned to his alma meter, Springfield College, to become Associate Alumni Director.

Poole compiled a 123-62 record at Western and won 19 or more matches in five of his six seasons at the Colonials’ helm.

Ferguson comes to Western after seven seasons as the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at the University of Hartford. In 2005, he was named the eighth coach in program history and led 2010’s squad to its most conference victories since 2002 and earned America East Coach of the Year honors in the process.

"The volleyball program has a strong tradition of excellence and the department has demonstrated it's commitment to helping student athletes excel on and off the court. I'm extremely eager to see what ways we can further all aspects of the program while continuing to represent the University and it's exceptional athletic program. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this program and am ecstatic about the future!
Historically, his teams have made a big difference in the classroom and in the community.

In the classroom, Ferguson’s teams have received American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) academic honors and were among the Top-10 percent in the nation in the past two year’s APR rankings.

Prior to Hartford, Ferguson served as the head women’s volleyball coach at Division II Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH from 2002-04. He led the Saint Anselm’s Hawks to consecutive Northeast 10 playoff appearances, including the best conference finish in school history.

During his stint at Saint Anselm, Ferguson also served as an assistant coach for the nationally-ranked men’s volleyball program at Division III Rivier College in Nashua, NH, where he helped lead the team to three NECVA New England Championships (2001-03). Ferguson also served as head coach for the girl’ s volleyball team at Nashua’s Bishop Guertin High School, where he was named 2001 Class L Coach of the Year.
Ferguson earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Rivier in 2000. He was captain of the men’s volleyball team at Rivier from 1994-96 where he led the team in virtually every statistical category. In 1999-2000, he was named to the NECVA Second Team and ranked nationally in hitting percentage and kills per game. He has also played with the Granite State Volleyball Club where he helped lead his team to a national title at the 2001 USA Volleyball Championships while garnering MVP honors.

A native of Montville, CT, Ferguson and his wife, Gerilyn, have a seven-year-old daughter, Maggie, and a four-year-old son, Myles. They reside in Wethersfield, CT.
