Volleyball results from Day Two at the Western Invitational

DANBURY, CT (Sep. 1) — Collegiate volleyball action continues Saturday at Western Connecticut State University’s Feldman Arena as the Colonials host Brandeis, Johnson & Wales, and Salve Regina.

In the day’s first match, Salve Regina University rebounded from a Friday night loss to Brandeis by defeating the host Colonials 3-1.  In game one, Salve Regina called a timeout with the score tied 15-15 and then went on a 5-1 run to take 20-16 lead.  Western narrowed the margin to 20-19 behind the hitting of senior Paxton Thornton (Sharon, CT), but the Seahawks held on down the stretch for a 25-22 win.

Western rushed out to an early 8-3 lead in game two and seemed to maintain a five-point margin throughout, evening the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 win.  Games three and four were both tightly contested, with neither team establishing substantial leads, but Salve Regina made the most of its opportunities at the end of each game, winning both by the same 26-24 score.  With the Seahawks' 3-1 win over the Colonials, both teams stand at 1-1 on the weekend.

In the second match of the day, Salve Regina carried its momentum from the morning win over Western and downed Johnson & Wales 25-16 in game one.  Johnson & Wales re-grouped to take game two 25-23 to tie the match at 1-all, but Salve Regina captured a 2-1 lead with a 25-21 win in game three.  With the score tied 24-24 in the match’s fourth game, Salve Regina scored two straight points to take the game and the match.  The Seahawks conclude the weekend with back to back wins and a 2-1 record, after suffering an opening night loss to Brandeis.

In the day’s third match, Brandeis survived a tightly contested five-game match to remain undefeated on the weekend.  After falling to Johnson & Wales 27-25 in game one, Brandeis came back in game two to claim a 25-18 victory.  Johnson & Wales regained the lead with a 26-24 game-three win, but Brandies took game four by a 25-23 score, and held off a late Johnson & Wales rally in game five to win the game 15-11 and the match 3-2.

In the fourth and final match of the day, Western took game one over Brandeis by scoring the game’s final three points in a game that was tightly contested throughout.  Brandeis turned the tables on the Colonials in game two by scoring the final three points of the game for a 25-21 victory.  In game three, an 11-0 run by Brandeis turned an 8-5 Western lead into a 16-8 lead for the Judges.  Brandeis pushed the advantage to 23-13 before Western mounted a 6-1 run to close the gap.  Brandeis finally closed out a game-point, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.  In game four, Brandeis again scored in streaks with a 7-0 run turning a 12-9 deficit into a 16-12 lead.  Trailing 21-19, Brandeis went on a 6-0 run to close out the game and the match, finishing the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record.
