Western volleyball moves to 5-5 on the season with 3-0 win over Lasell
DANBURY, CT (Sept. 15) —
The Western Connecticut State University volleyball won its second match of the day and raised its record to 5-5 on the season with a 3-0 win over the visitors from Lasell College Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
Western stormed out to an early game-one lead behind the serving of junior Rachel Volpe (Southington, CT), and held an 11-0 lead before the first Lasell College side-out. The Colonials used a balanced attack and a deep bench to maintain their lead and closed out game one by the score of 25-10.
In game two, Lasell made some adjustments receiving Western’s serves and stayed within striking for the majority of the game. The Colonials scored the game’s final four points to claim a 25-19 victory and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third game of the match, Lasell again challenged the Colonials and trailed by only two points late in the game at 19-17. The Colonials then went on a 6-0 run to close out the game and the match.
For the match, senior Paxton Thornton (Sharon, CT) led Western with 10 kills and nine digs, sophomore Jennifer Hogan (Franklin Square, NY) handed out 26 assists, and Volpe finished with five services aces and 10 digs.
Statistical leaders for Lasell were freshman Alyssa Nahigian (Coventry, RI) with 24 assists, sophomore Alexis Chappell (Springfield, MA) with five kills, and junior Sara Biondo (Coventry, RI) with 11 digs.
With the win, Western evens its record at 5-5 on the season, while Lasell College falls to 0-10. The Colonials return to action on Thursday, September 20th, when they host Emmanuel College at Feldman Arena. Game time is slated for 7:00pm.
