Eastern Connecticut edges Western Connecticut, 14-13 in double overtime

Box Score

DANBURY, CT (Apr. 25) - Junior defender Rachel Meotti (Glastonbury, CT) scored the game-winning goal with 33 seconds remaining in the second sudden-victory overtime period to lift Eastern Connecticut State University to a 14-13 victory over Western Connecticut State University in the regular-season home finale at The WAC on Wednesday afternoon.

Meotti caused a turnover by Kirsten Hudock (Newtown, CT) in the Western end of the field with 44 ticks left and raced virtually untouched the length of the field and slipped one by goalie Karli Portnoy (Sea Cliff, NY), who had one of her finest outings as a Colonial. It could not be a better time for Meotti's to score her first goal of the season.

Portnoy, this week's Little East Conference Goalie of the Week, turned away 18 shots on the day including five in the overtime periods, several from point-blank range.

The first half was a fury of action as the two teams traded goals and were tied six times before Devon Edwards (Islip, NY) and Nicole Perrone (Brookfield, CT) scored back-to-back goals to give Western a 9-7 lead at intermission.

Perrone led Western with five goals while Edwards, the team's leading scorer, finished with four markers. Both scored two goals in the second half and overtime periods.

Although the pace of play became more deliberate in the second half, neither team could pull away from each other as the game was deadlocked five more times and there were three lead changes.

With the score tied, 12-12 at the end of regulation, Christine Lillis (Waterford, CT) put the Warriors up 13-12 with her unassisted goal with 14 seconds remaining in the first overtime.

Edwards visited Mockingbird Lane with her 62nd goal of the season to knot the game at 13-13 with 1:27 left in extra time.

Eastern was led by Daniela Marchitto (Orange, CT) who scored four goals, three of them in the first half, and Ashley Prizio (Brookfield, CT) who matched her four markers, with a pair of them coming after intermission.

Kristianna Ibsen (Shelton, CT) made 13 saves for the winners.

The Warriors, now 11-6 overall and guaranteed of at least a third-place finish in the final Little East Conference standing with a 4-2 record. Western, 10-6 overall, may need to defeat Keene State on the road on Saturday to earn a berth into the LEC Tournament, which begins next Tuesday.

At the time of this release, Rhode Island College was leading UMass Dartmouth, 15-10. A win on Wednesday night by the Anchorwomen would also give the Colonials at least the sixth seed.
