HOLDERNESS, NH (May 4) - Junior Nicole Perrone (Brookfield, Conn.) recorded three goals and two assists Friday afternoon as fifth-seeded Western Connecticut State University upset top-seeded Plymouth State University, 10-9, in a semifinal game of the Little East Conference women’s lacrosse tournament played at The Holderness School.
The outcome snapped PSU’s 13-game winning streak and sent the Colonials to their first LEC Championship game appearance. Western, 12-7, which also upset fourth-seeded University of Southern Maine in the quarterfinals, will travel to second-seeded Keene State College which defeated third-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University, 7-6 in the other LEC semifinal game on Friday. Game time is slated for 1 pm on Sunday.
Plymouth State, which captured its seventh LEC regular season title with a 6-0 mark, completes its season at 13-2 overall. PSU had defeated Western in the regular season meeting, 12-11, scoring the winning goal with five seconds left in regulation.
Perrone was one of four Colonials who were multiple goal scorers against PSU, as seniors Jessica Bouwman (New Milford, Conn.) and Kaitlyn Arconti (Danbury, Conn.) and junior Devon Edwards (Islip, N.Y.) tallied two goals apiece. Edwards also had an excellent day on draws, finishing with a game-high eight draw controls. Bouwman's goal with 5:43 remaining in game proved to be the game-winner and put the Colonials up, 10-8.
Edwards finished the day with three points and now has 100 points on the season. She has scored 67 goals and assisted on 33 others in her final season.
Plymouth State had three multiple goal scorers. Freshman Shannon Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) led the way with three goals and an assist while sophomore MeKenna Bay (Maracaibo, Venezuela) and junior Amanda Richardson (Bradford, N.H.) chipped in with two goals each and freshman Meghan McNabb (Lexington, Mass.) contributed three assists. Junior Kristen Guest (Sandwich, Mass.) played well in the middle of the field and finished with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
The Colonials never trailed in the contest but didn’t clinch the victory until the final buzzer went off. Western took the lead four times in the first half only to see PSU come back to tie. The visitors went into the intermission with a slim 7-6 advantage.
Perrone’s third goal of the game a minute into the second half put the Colonials ahead by two, and freshman Molly Gleason (Haverhill, Mass.) answered for PSU with 21:12 on the clock. The teams traded a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the game, but the Panthers were never able to pull even.
WestConn won 13 of the 21 draws and had a 25-21 advantage in ground balls. PSU had a 28-24 advantage in shots, but WCSU sophomore Karli Portnoy (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) made 10 saves to record the victory. PSU sophomore goalie Lorin Field (Hollis, N.H.) finished with eight saves.
