Western women's lacrosse fall to Keene State College, 13-7
in Little East Conference Championship game

KEENE, NH (May 6) - The Keene State College women's lacrosse team raced out to a 6-2 lead and never led by fewer than five goals the rest of the way as they defeated Western Connecticut State University, 13-7 in the Little East Conference Tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Owls earn an automatic berth into the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships, which begin later this week.

The Colonials, 12-8, enjoyed their most successful season and advanced to the LEC title game for the first time in the 13-year program.

Lauren Brown led all scorers with four goals while Julie Trombetta finished with three goals of Keene State's first four scores.

Western trailed 4-0 with 20:35 remaining in the first half then came within the same margin, 6-2 following an unassisted goal by senior attack Devon Edwards (Islip, NY) with 2:16 left before the break.

Both Edwards and Nicole Perrone (Brookfield, CT) matched each other with a team-high two goals in the loss.

Keene State, 15-3, held its largest lead, eight goals, on two occasions in the early going of the second stanza.

Karli Portnoy (Sea Cliff, NY) made seven saves for the Colonials while Erin Taylor turned away seven attempts for the winners.

On Thursday, Western defeated top seed Plymouth State, 10-9 in the LEC semifinals and stopped the Panthers' 13-game win streak. Plymouth State could earn an at-large berth into the national tournament after posting a 13-2 campaign. The Colonials opened the post-season tournament with a 12-10 victory at the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday.
