Named to Second Team

Offensive Player of the Year — Nicole Evans, Plymouth State University

PROVIDENCE, RI — Plymouth State University dominated the LEC Post-Season Awards as senior midfielder Nicole Evans (Scituate, MA) was cited as the Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Year, junior midfielder Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, MA) was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year and Panther Head Coach Paula Habel was named Coach of the Year. Also, UMass Dartmouth freshman midfielder Connie Jones (Springfield, MA) was named Rookie of the Year to highlight the league’s annual list of award winners.
     Evans led the Panthers in scoring, compiling 64 points on 38 goals and 26 assists, as PSU captured the conference regular season and tournament titles. In 18 games, Evans also compiled 52 groundballs, 22 caused turnovers and 17 draw controls. During conference play, Evans led the league in assists per game and points per game.
     Fresh off an Offensive Player of the Year award last spring, MacDonald receives recognition for her defensive skills. In LEC action, MacDonald was in the top-three of the league in draw controls, caused turnovers and groundballs per game. In 18 games played this spring, MacDonald has 47 points on 37 goals and ten assists. She leads the Panthers in groundballs, draw controls and caused turnovers. MacDonald was named LEC Offensive Player of the week once and Defensive Player of the Week twice this season.
     In 16 games, Jones scored 12 goals and dished out three assists for 15 points. She also compiled 41 groundballs, 17 draw controls and nine caused turnovers. Jones helped lead the Corsairs to the LEC Tournament Semifinals where they fell to eventual champion Plymouth State. On the season, Jones earned LEC Rookie of the Week honors four times.
     Plymouth State continued its dominance in the LEC as second-year head coach Habel led the Panthers to their fifth regular season title and fourth tournament championship. The Panthers finished the LEC season with yet another undefeated record, improving their all-time conference mark to 29-0. Plymouth State will now be making its second trip to the NCAA Tournament in the past three years.
     Joining Evans and MacDonald on the All-Conference First Team were teammates, senior attack Bethany Brown (Norwich, CT) and senior defender Hillary Arthur (Essex Junction, VT) while Eastern Connecticut also had a foursome on the First Team in senior midfielder Kara Mastroianni (Newington, CT), junior midfielder Jenna Faiola (Billerica, MA), junior defender Kara Bradley (North Haven, CT) and junior goalkeeper Erin Calkins (Stony Brook, NY).
     UMass Dartmouth sent a duo of players to the First Team, while Rhode Island College and Keene State added one to the squad. Junior attack Katelyn Elliot (Lowell, MA) and junior defender Jill Howard (Easton, MA) represented the Corsairs, junior midfielder Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, RI) represented the Anchorwomen while senior attack Colleen Murphy (Mansfield, MA) represented the Owls.
     The Second Team attack positions were filled by Keene State senior Kristal Lundegaard (Babylon, NY), Eastern Connecticut sophomore Lily Anderson (Portland, ME) and Plymouth State junior Meg Cupoli (Southboro, MA).
     The Second Team midfield consisted of the Keene State senior duo of Lauren Saunders (Fremont, NH) and Alex Manzin (Avon, CT), UMass Dartmouth senior Mary Doherty (Loudonville, NY), Western Connecticut sophomore Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, CT) and Southern Maine junior Ashley Dyer (Harrison, ME).
     Keene State senior Jamie Cotton (Newton, MA), Eastern Connecticut junior Emily Constant (Franklin, CT), Western Connecticut junior Ashley Prescott (Norwalk, CT) and Plymouth State senior Meghan O’Neil (Scituate, MA) represented the Second Team defenders while Western Connecticut senior Melissa Perry (Danbury, CT) was named the Second Team goalkeeper.

LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE WOMEN’S LACROSSE TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS
OWLS ADVANCE, DEFEAT WESTERN CONN. 18-9

KEENE, N.H. 5/2/06 – The third-seeded Keene State College women’s lacrosse team defeated sixth seed Western Connecticut State University 18-9 in a Little East Conference quarterfinal tournament game played at Owl Athletic Complex on Tuesday.
     Keene State (8-9) advances to the semifinals where they will face second seed Eastern Conn. State University at Plymouth State on Friday (3:30 p.m.). KSC lost to ECSU 7-5 earlier in the season. Top seed PSU will take on the winner of the Southern Main/UMass-Dartmouth game in the other semifinal contest.
     Colleen Murphy (Mansfield, Mass.), Alexandra Manzin (Avon, Conn.), and Kristal Lundegaard (Babylon, N.Y.) led a balanced Owl offense with four goals each. Steph Georgevits (Concord, N.H.), Lanaya Nelson (Chester, Conn.) and Lauren Saunders (Fremont, N.H.) scored two goals each.
     Cuyler Rush (New Milford, Conn.), Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, Conn.), and Jessica Majeski (Norwalk, Conn.) had two goals each to lead WCSU, which concludes its season with a 2-14 record.
     The Owls scored the first three goals of the game and held an 11-3 halftime lead. The Colonials cut the Owls’ lead to 12-6 early in the second half on a goal by Everin. But Lundegaard intercepted a clearing pass by WCSU goalie Melissa Perry (Danbury, Conn.) and put it in the net. Georgevits finished off a pass from Lundegarrd two minutes later putting the Owls up 14-6.
     Jen Gearing (Westfield, Mass.) had 14 saves for KSC while Perry stopped 15 shots for WCSU.

UMASS DARTMOUTH DOWNS
WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE, 21-12

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–The second half was the key for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s lacrosse team in their Little East Conference match against Western Connecticut State at Cressy Field Saturday afternoon.

The Corsairs outscored WCSU in the second half, 10-4, and went on to defeat the Warriors, 21-12, in their final LEC game of the regular season.

UMass Dartmouth broke a 3-all tie with three unanswered goals in the first half and was never headed. Sophomore midfielder Marie Spang (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS), senior defender Andrea Travers (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) and junior forward Katelyn Elliott (Lowell, MA/Lowell HS) scored to give the Corsairs a 6-3 lead midway through the first half.

Two more goals by Spang, a pair by senior defender Katelyn Sullivan (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and another by senior midfielder Mary Doherty (Loudonville, NY/Shaker HS) propelled UMD to an 11-5 lead. But Taylor Moore scored a goal and Caitlin Everin added two more for the Colonials in the final 1:01 of the first half, and the Corsairs led by 11-8 at halftime.

UMD scored the first six goals of the second half to take a commanding lead, with Elliott scoring twice during the decisive run. The teams traded goals during the final 15 minutes, which accounted for the final score.

Spang led the Corsairs with five goals, Elliott and Sullivan each scored four times, Doherty had three goals, Travers had two, and freshman midfielders Connie Jones (Springfield, MA/Somers, CT HS) and Samantha Hulbert (Ipswich, MA/Ipswich HS) and junior forward Susie Nearhoof (Frederick, MA/Johnson HS/Frederick CC) each scored once. Spang added three assists, and Sullivan had two.

Moore and Cuyler Rush each scored four goals for the Warriors. Everin added two, while Rachel Bolmer and Ashley Prescott each added one. Everin and Rush each had two assists,

The Corsairs out shot WCSU 44-36. Doherty made 18 saves, while the Warriors’ Melissa Perry made 14.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 7-6, 3-3 in the Little East Conference with the victory. Western Connecticut State, coached by former UMass Dartmouth head field hockey and assistant women’s lacrosse coach Jen Burrows, fell to 2-13 and 1-5. The Corsairs will return to action when they play a first round LEC playoff game Tuesday afternoon against an opponent to be decided. The game will most likely be at Cressy Field at 4:00 p.m. host Western Connecticut State Saturday afternoon. The game was the final action of the year for WCSU.

LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE
Offensive Player of the Week


Caitlin Everin, Sophomore, Attack, Western Connecticut
In a 1-1 week for the Colonials, Everin tallied five goals and seven assists for 12 points. In a 17-4 loss to Mount Saint Vincent, Everin scored one goal and added one assist with five groundballs. Everin then led the Colonials to their first win of the season, a 20-13 victory over LEC foe Rhode Island College, with four goals, six assists, six groundballs and two caused turnovers.
 

WOMEN’S LACROSSE MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW, DEFEATS LASELL 19-14

DANBURY, CT – Sophomore attack Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, CT) tallied six goals and three assists to lead the Western Connecticut State University women’s lacrosse team to its second straight victory as the Colonials downed Lasell College, 19-14, Tuesday afternoon at the WAC in Danbury. 
   The Colonials (2-12) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of play as Everin earned her first two assists on goals from junior midfielder Taylor Moore (Hamden, CT) and junior attack Rachel Bolmer (Newtown, CT).  WestConn junior attack Cuyler Rush (New Milford, CT) added the third goal for the Colonials.  The Lasers (5-7) cut the lead to two as Caitlyn Murphy scored her first of six goals on the day to make it a 3-1 game with 22:37 left in the opening stanza. 
   The teams were fairly evenly matched over the final 22:37 as the Colonials went on a 5-4 run to close out the half with an 8-4 advantage.  Everin had three of the final five goals of the half for WestConn while Rush tallied the other two.  Murphy and Laser attack Mandi Rapisardi (2 goals) scored the final three goals of the half for the visitors. 
   Just twelve seconds into the second half, the deficit was back to three for the Lasers as Sarah Williams made it an 8-5 game. WestConn then went on a 4-0 run to make it a 12-5 game with 21:29 showing on the clock.  The Lasers then retaliated with a 4-0 run of its own to bring the score to 12-9 with just under 17:00 left to play.  With 16:01 to play, Everin stopped the bleeding for the Colonials and Rush added one more goal to push the lead back to 14-9. 
   The Lasers continued to fight as Murphy added yet another goal to make it 14-10 game with 11:10 to play.  The four goal deficit would be as close as the visitors would get, however, as the teams continued to battle until the final horn sounded with the Colonials taking the 19-14 victory.  
   WestConn senior goalkeeper Melissa Perry (Danbury, CT) made 19 saves for her second straight win while Noelle O’Leary stopped 17 shots in the loss. 
  
The Colonials travel to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday for its last regular season game; start time is scheduled for noon.

WESTCONN WOMEN’S LAX CAPTURES FIRST WIN…
DEFEAT RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE, 20-13

DANBURY, CT – Cuyler Rush (New Milford, CT) and Taylor Moore (Norwalk, CT) scored six goals apiece as the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team captured its first win of the season behind an offensive explosion, 20-13 over Rhode Island College at The WAC Saturday afternoon.
     WestConn's victory on Saturday clinched a berth into the Little East Conference Tournament which begins on Tuesday, May 2.
     The Colonials, 1-12 and 1-4 in the Little East Conference, never trailed in the game after taking a 2-1 lead on a goal by Rush with 4:47 into the contest. It was the highest goal output of the year for WestConn which had not scored more than nine goals in 12 losses prior to Saturday.
     After a 2-2 tie, WestConn scored four unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead on another Rush goal with 17:17 remaining in the first stanza.
     Rhode Island College's goal-scoring machine Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, RI) netted eight goals on the afternoon for the Anchorwomen. She now has 95 goals in 14 games in her third season. At the start of the week, Gavin had scored 29 more goals than any other player in the Little East Conference.
     The closest the Anchorwomen would get the rest of the way was 9-6 following a Marissa Kielbaskinski (Windsord, CT) goal with 4:44 elapsed in the second half. They again drew within three goals when Gavin made it 11-8 with 21:06 remaining in the game.
     Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, CT) added four goals for the winners while Rachel Bolmer (Newtown, CT) and Jessica Majeski (Norwalk, CT) chipped a pair of goals each.
     Melissa Reggio (Commack, NY) added three goals for the Anchorwomen.
     Senior goalkeeper Melissa Perry (Danbury, CT), one of only two seniors who were honored prior to the start of the game, made17 saves on the afternoon. Perry faced 44 shots on the day.
     Sydney Culbertson (North Kingstown, RI) made 12 saves for RIC.
     WestConn hosts Lasell College on Tuesday, April 25 at 4 p.m. Rhode Island College, 2-12 and 0-5 in the league, travels to Eastern Connecticut next Saturday to wind up the season.

OWLS DEFEAT WESTERN CONN. 16-1

KEENE, N.H. 04/16/06 – Ten different Owl players scored as Keene State College defeated Western Connecticut State University 16-1 in a Little East Conference women’s lacrosse game played at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.
     Keene State improves to 5-7 (3-1 LEC) while Western Conn. (0-11, 04 LEC) remains winless.
     Kristal Lundegaard (Babylon, N.Y.) netted three goals, and Lauren Saunders (Fremont, N.H.), Colleen Murphy (Mansfield, Mass.), Lanaya Nelson (Chester, Conn.), and Michelle Mazzotta (Cromwell, Conn.) had two goals each to lead KSC’s offense.
     The Owls, who had a 43-4 shot advantage, jumped out to a 5-0 lead six minutes into the game on the way to building a 12-0 halftime lead.
     The Colonial’s Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, Conn.) prevented the shutout with a goals in the final minutes of play.
     Mandy Gray (Sharon, Mass.) made one saves for the Owls. Melissa Perry (Danbury, Conn.) had a busy day in the Colonial’s goal stopping 17 shots.

WESTCONN WOMEN’S LACROSSE DEFEATED BY SPRINGFIELD
COLLEGE, 18-3, IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION

DANBURY, CT – Despite 36 saves by senior goalkeeper Melissa Perry (Danbury, CT), the Western Connecticut State University women’s lacrosse team fell to Springfield College, 18-3, in non-conference action tonight at the WAC in Danbury. 
  
Perry faced 30 shots-on-goal in the first half and made 17 saves but the Pride (7-4) held a commanding 13-2 lead at the half.  Pride junior attack Ashley Martell tallied four goals and two assists in the first half.   After falling behind, 7-0, WestConn junior attack Rachel Bolmer (Newtown, CT) scored the first goal for the Colonials (0-10) with 7:52 to play in the opening frame.  SC responded by closing out the half with a 6-1 run to make it a 13-2 lead at the break. 
   In the second half, Pride sophomore attack Alaina Schnitzer scored two goals, her second coming with 6:18 to play, giving SC an 18-2 lead.  WestConn finished the scoring with 3:19 to play as sophomore attack Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, CT) scored her second goal of the contest for the final of 18-3. 
   WestConn travels to Keene State College on Saturday for a Little East Conference game; the start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.

Southern Maine Downs Western Connecticut, 17-9

GORHAM, Maine -- Juniors Virginia Flood (Acton, Maine/Wells) and Ashley Dyer (Harrison, Maine/Oxford Hills) each scored five goals to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 17-9 victory over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a Little East Conference women's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Hodgdon Field.
     The win was the second of the season for the Huskies who improved to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Colonials, winless on the season, are 0-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
     Southern Maine scored the first five goals of the game to get the early jump. Dyer scored twice and set up a goal by sophomore Lisa Henley (Bristol, Vt./Middlebury Union) in the opening 12 minutes.
     The Colonials scored the next three goals to close the gap to 5-3 with 12:30 left in the half. Taylor Moore (Hamden, Conn.), Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Jessica Majeski (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) found the net for the Colonials.
     Henley scored consecutive goals three minutes apart for the Huskies as the host team outscored the visitors 4-1 over the final 10 minutes of the half to give USM a 9-4 lead at the break.
Southern Maine scored the first three goals of the second half to extend its lead to 12-4. The closest Western Connecticut would get the remainder of the way was six (13-7) after Moore's third goal of the game with 15:11 left.
     Flood scored the next three goals to give the Huskies a 16-7 advantage with just under nine minutes to play.
     Junior Sarah Trent (Chanhassen, Minn.) and Henley each had three goals for the Southern Maine.
Moore led the Colonials with three goals. Everin and Ashley Prescott (Norwalk, Conn.) each netted two goals.
     Sophomores Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Millbrook School) and Miranda Coffey (Bowdoin, Maine/Mt. Ararat) each played one half in goal for the Huskies making eight saves apiece. Senior Melissa Perry (Danbury, Conn.) had 25 saves for the Colonials.
     Southern Maine returns to action Sunday afternoon hosting Lasell College. Western Connecticut hosts Springfield College under the lights (7:00 p.m.) on Thursday.

WESTCONN WOMEN’S LACROSSE FALLS TO
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE, 16-3

DANBURY, CT – The Western Connecticut State University women’s lacrosse team fell to Western New England College, 16-3, on Thursday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Conference in Danbury.

The Golden Bears (4-3) took leads of 4-0 and 7-1 before WestConn mounted a comeback, scoring two goals before intermission. Cuyler Rush (New Milford, CT) and Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, CT) tallied goals inside of four minutes as the Colonials drew with four goals, 7-3 at the break.

Western New England would go on to score nine unanswered goals in the second half.

Kayte Devine (New Fairfield, CT) enjoyed her return to the area leading the Golden Bears with five goals on the day. Julianna Mulroy (Wellesley, MA), Alyson Nowell (Feeding Hills, MA), Shannon Mongomery (North Babylon, NY) and Audry Kelton (Wilder, VT) each netted two goals for the winners.

Colonials senior goalkeeper Melissa Perry (Danbury, CT) made an incredible 31 saves in the loss as WNEC out shot WestConn, 59-17.

Tara Cushman (Scituate, MA) and Brianna Sylvia (West Tisbury, MA) split time between the pipes for the Golden Bears. Cushman made seven saves while Sylvia turned away three shots.

WestConn travels to University of Southern Maine this Saturday for a 1 pm start.

WESTCONN WOMEN’S LACROSSE FALLS TO EASTERN CONN. IN LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE PLAY

DANBURY, CT – The Western Connecticut State University women’s lacrosse team fell to in-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University, 17-2, today in Little East Conference action at the Westside Athletic Conference in Danbury.
   The Warriors (3-5, 2-0) got out to an early first half lead and never looked back.  The Colonials (0-7, 0-2) were blanked, 10-0 in the opening half as Eastern received four first half goals from senior midfielder Kara Mastoianni (Newington, CT) including the final three goals of the first half.  Warrior midfielder junior Jenna Faiola also tallied three goals in the first half. 
   In the second half, the Warriors continued to pad the lead as they scored the first five goals of the half including two by junior midfielder Meghan Feraco (Norwich, CT) to take a 15 goal lead with 18:45 showing on the clock.  While the lead was insurmountable for the Colonials, they would not go down without a fight as sophomore attack Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, CT) scored two goals in the last 15:15 to get the home team on the board.  Everin’s second goal was the final goal of the game for either team as Eastern went home with a 17-2 victory. 
   Warrior junior goalkeeper Erin Calkins (Stony Brook, NY) faced just ten shots on goal, and saving eight shots, for the win, as the Colonials managed only 14 shots in the game. WestConn senior goalkeeper Melissa Perry (Danbury, CT) saved 18 shots in the loss.

WESTCONN WOMEN’S LACROSSE DOWNED BY PLYMOUTH STATE, 15-5

DANBURY, CT – The Western Connecticut State University women’s lacrosse team fell to Plymouth State University, 15-5, in the Little East Conference season opener today in at the WAC on the WestConn campus. 
   The Panthers (3-3, 1-0) got out to an early 5-0 lead with the help of two goals and an assist from Annie Pinault.  The Colonials (0-6, 0-1) bounced back to make it a 5-2 game, with 10:52 remaining in the first half, as junior attack Cuyler Rush (New Milford, CT) and freshman attack Sarah Sullinger (Brookfield, CT) had a goal apiece.   
   Plymouth State continued to roll however, closing the period with a 3-1 run to give the Panthers an 8-3 advantage at the break. 
   Plymouth State started the second half with six consecutive goals including one more by Pinault to put the game out of reach at 14-3 with 17:34 to go in the game.  The Colonials finished the game on a 2-1 run including a goal by junior defender Jena Lung (Bethel, CT) as she found the back of the net with just five seconds remaining.  It was not enough, however, as the visitors held on to win 15-5. 
   WestConn hosts in-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, April 4; the game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. 

WELLESLEY ROLLS TO 16-1 WIN OVER WESTCONN
IN WOMEN'S LACROSSE ACTION

DANBURY, CT- The Wellesley College women's lacrosse team rolled to a 16-1 victory over Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
     Katie Moseley (Denver, CO) and Audrey Gill (Exeter, NH) each scored five goals against the Colonials to lead Wellesley, now 4-4 on the year. They each added an assist for six points on the afternoon.
     Abby Baird (Gloucester, MA) added three goals for the winners. Amber Evans (Worthington, OH) and Catherine Schaefer (Coxsackie, NY) contributed two and one goals, respectively to round out the scoring for the Blue.
    Wellesley held a 6-1 advantage at intermission.
     Jessica Majeski (Norwalk, CT) scored the lone goal for the Colonials to make the score 2-1 in favor of Blue with 18:27 remaining in the first half. Wellesley would go on to score the last 14 goals of the game.
     Melissa Perry (Danbury, CT) had 15 saves for the Colonials.
     Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, NY) made 13 saves for Wellesley.
     The Colonials host Plymouth State University in the Little East Conference opener on Saturday, April 1 at 4 p.m.

MANHATTANVILLE ROLLS OVER COLONIALS 18-2

March 27, 2006 - Behind two goals and four assists from sophomore Cory Alcorn the Manhattanville Valiants defeated the Western Connecticut State Colonials 18-2.

Freshman Abbe Grimes scored three goals and an assist while freshman Katie Bertel added four goals as the Valiants improve to 2-3 overall and 1-2 at home.

Senior Katie Hand picked up the win in net with one save. In relief, senior Ashley Trimble made three stops.

Manhattanville scored five goals in the game’s first four minutes as Bertel netted two goals, Grimes tallied one, sophomore Jessica Zimmerman added one and one from senior Dionne Jones.

The Valiants would score seven more times to increase the lead to 12-0 at halftime.

In the second half, the Valiants continued to pressure and out shot the Colonials 14-6 in the frame.

Senior Danielle Lacroix and Jones each had two goals and an assist.

Zimmerman, sophomore Grayce Cunzio, freshman Colleen Holahan, sophomore Kelly McMurray and freshman Amber Winslow recorded one goal apiece.

Jessica Majeski and Cuyler Rush scored WestConn's two goals.

Melissa Perry made 10 saves in the loss.

Kean Women’s Lacrosse Overwhelms
Western Connecticut, 20-4

UNION, N.J. – (3/16/06) Kean University junior Gio Buono (Plainsboro, N.J.) scored six goals and sophomore Tara Nardella (Old Bridge, N.J.) added five goals as the Cougars rolled past Western Connecticut State University, 20-4, in women’s lacrosse action at Alumni Stadium on Thursday afternoon. With the victory, the Cougars picked up their first win of the season and improved to 1-0, while the Colonials fell to 0-2.

Kean raced out to an 11-0 lead before the Colonials finally got on the board. In the first half, Buono and Nardella each scored four goals, while Stephanie Lovallo (Old Bridge, N.J.) tallied two goals and assisted on two others and Tina Broomfield (Ewing, N.J.) added three goals in the first 30 minutes.

Overall in the game, Lovallo finished with four goals and three assists, Cherie McNellis (Magnolia, N.J.) had two goals and two assists. Sophomore Allison Green (West Deptford, N.J.) and freshman Stephanie Arroyo (Keyport, N.J.) each picked up one assist in the victory. For the Cougars, Lydia Pinto (Clark, N.J.) played just over 30 minutes in the net making two saves while allowing just one goal.

For the Colonials, Cuyler Rush (New Milford, Conn.) scored three goals, while Ashley Prescott (Norwalk, Conn.) tallied one goal. In the net, Melissa Perry (Danbury, Conn.) played well making 16 saves.

BROCKLEBANK, TANIS POWER MONTCLAIR STATE
PAST WESTERN CONNECTICUT, 18-1

Montclair, NJ (3/9/06) – Junior attack Shauna Brocklebank had four goals and three assists as Montclair State had nine different players score goals in an 18-1 victory over Western Connecticut in NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Thursday afternoon. The win was the first for new Montclair State head coach Nicol Parcelluzzi, who took over the program in July. It was the season opener for both teams.
     Jennifer Tanis added three goals and one assist as the Red Hawks (1-0) scored five times in the first three minutes of the game en route to the victory.
Melissa Perry made 18 saves for the Colonials (0-1).
     The Red Hawks opened the scoring 64 seconds into the game as Marykate DiBenedetto scored and Brocklebank notched the first of her four goals 12 seconds later for a 2-0 lead. Tanis increased the lead 11 seconds after the Bocklebank tally and Bethany Blaine made it a four-goal lead off an assist from Brocklebank with 28 minutes remaining. Brocklebank added her second with 27:47 left.
     Tanis would net her second of the game with 19:29 remaining in the opening half and Brocklebank registered the hat trick at the 15-minute mark as Montclair State built and 8-0 lead. Brianna Gillin scored a pair of goals, the second coming at 10:23 to play giving MSU an 11-0 advantage. Tanis got her hat trick with 8:44 left off an assist from defender Dina Morrone, who picked up her first career point. Cristin Bentz and Ann Daily completed the MSU scoring as the Red Hawks led 14-0 at halftime.
     Brocklebank’s fourth goal of the game midway through the second half gave Montclair State a 17-0 advantage before Western Connecticut finally broke through. Off a free-position attempt Cuyler Rush fired a shot that beat the goaltender with 7:26 to play.
     Montclair State netminders Kristin Kuhmann and Jenn Bogin combined on the victory with Bogin making four saves as the Red Hawks outshot the Colonials, 41-7.
     MSU returns to action on Tuesday, March 14 as they face McDaniel College in West Palm Beach , Florida . Western Connecticut heads back to New Jersey on March 16 as they head to Kean University for a 4:00 pm matchup.
Little East Conference Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Poll
Four-Time Defending Regular Season Champion Plymouth State Earns Top Honors

PROVIDENCE, RI — Four-time defending regular season champion Plymouth State collected three first place votes and 43 total points to finish first in the annual preseason poll of the Little East Conference’s seven women’s lacrosse head coaches.
     The Panthers had their run of three consecutive tournament championships end last spring but they still have never lost an LEC regular season contest as they are a perfect 23-0 after ending last spring with a 6-0 mark. The Panthers fell in the finals of the LEC Tournament but still received a bid to the ECAC Tournament where they easily swept their way to the title.
     The team ending the Panthers’ dominance was Eastern Connecticut, who received 42 points and three first-place votes to finish second in the preseason poll. The Warriors finished the regular season with a 5-1 LEC record and upset PSU to earn the program’s first-ever LEC Title and NCAA Tournament berth. ECSU advanced past the first round but fell in its next contest. Just behind the Warriors in the preseason poll with the final first-place vote and 40 total points was Keene State. The Owls placed in a third-place tie last spring with a 3-3 LEC record. KSC received a bid to the ECAC Tournament, advancing to the finals before falling to PSU.
     UMass Dartmouth placed fourth in the preseason poll with 27 total points while Southern Maine was fifth with 17 points. Both the Corsairs and the Huskies ended the 2005 LEC regular season with 2-4 records which was good for a fifth-place tie.
     Rounding out the poll was Western Connecticut in sixth with 16 points and Rhode Island College in seventh with 11 points. The Colonials finished last season with a 3-3 record while the Anchorwomen were winless at 0-6.

DENNA STACHELEK GRASSO RESIGNS WOMEN'S LACROSSE POST
AT WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY

DANBURY, CT – After six seasons as Head Women's Lacrosse Coach at Western Connecticut State University, Denna Stachelek Grasso will resign her post on May 31, announced Ed Farrington, WestConn Director of Athletics and Recreation.
     Stachelek Grasso was named the Head Coach of the women’s lacrosse program at Western Connecticut State University in June of 1999.
     She has compiled a 29-58 record in six seasons at the Colonials' helm.
     This past season, the Colonials finished with a 6-10 overall record and were 3-3 in the Little East Conference. They finished in third place during the regular season and advanced to the LEC Tournament semifinals.
    A year ago, Stechelek Grasso guided the Colonials to a 4-11 overall record, 2-4 in the LEC. In 2003, the Colonials went 7-10 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the LEC. That season, they also finished in third place and advanced to the LEC Tournament semifinals.
     She led the Colonials to a 3-9 overall record in her first season and improved to 6-7 in 2001. In 2002, WestConn went 3-11 and 2-4 in the first season of LEC play.
     Stachelek Grasso, a 1993 graduate of the University of Connecticut, had been the head women’s lacrosse coach at Alfred University in upstate New York from 1997 to 1999. She compiled a 17-12 record at Alfred.

JENNIFER BURROWS NAMED
HEAD WOMEN'S LACROSSE COACH

(Nov. 18, 2005)  Jennifer Burrows has been named Head Coach of the Western Connecticut State University Women's Lacrosse announced Ed Farrington, Director of Athletics and Recreation.
     "We have been fortunate to find another young aggressive coach to join our coaching staff," stated Farrington.  "Jennifer Burrows comes to us from a fine university and a very distinguished and competitive athletic program."
     Burrows, a former field hockey and lacrosse standout and 2002 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, comes to WestConn after two seasons as the Corsairs’ Head Field Hockey Coach.
     This past fall, UMass Dartmouth's field hockey team went 10-11 overall and 6-5 in Little East Conference play.  It advanced to the semifinals of the LEC Tournament before falling to eventual champion Keene State College, 1-0 in overtime.
     In 2004, she began her collegiate coaching career as an Assistant Coach for the UMass Dartmouth women’s lacrosse team.
     "WestConn already has a competitive women's lacrosse program so I'm ready to hit the ground running," said Burrows.  "I'm really excited to start a new sport as a head coach and to make this program better."
     Burrows enjoyed a distinguished athletic career at UMass Dartmouth from 1998 through 2002.  The 1998 Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, Burrows was also an LEC All-Conference, All-Tournament and Outstanding Athletic Achievement winner during the 1999 season.  A 2000 Outstanding Athletic Achievement winner for a second year, Burrows was selected as team captain for the Corsiars during her senior season of 2002.
     Burrows, a native of New Bedford, Mass., replaces Denna Stachelek Grasso who resigned her post after six seasons last May.

 

LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES 2005 WOMEN'S LACROSSE ALL-STAR TEAMS

PROVIDENCE, RI — Plymouth State University sophomore midfielder Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, MA) was cited as the Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Year while Eastern Connecticut State University’s sophomore defender Kara Bradley (North Haven, CT) was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year, the Warrior freshman goalkeeper Erin Calkins (Stony Brook, NY) was named Rookie of the year and their leader Kathy Railey was honored as the Coach of the Year to highlight the league’s annual list of award winners.
     MacDonald helped guide Plymouth State to its fourth consecutive Little East Conference Regular Season title with an undefeated 6-0 record. She led the team in points, draw controls, ground balls and was second on the squad in goals scored and assists.
     Bradley and Calkins each anchored an Eastern Connecticut defense that helped lead the Colonials to their first-ever LEC Tournament Championship. The win over Plymouth State in the championship game was the first loss for the Panthers to an LEC Opponent in the leagues four-year history. Bradley, the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer, led the Warriors in ground balls this season. Calkins played every minute in goal for ECSU this spring and was second in the LEC in goals-against average.
     Eastern Connecticut Head Coach Kathy Railey led her squad to a 13-7 overall record and a 5-1 regular season conference record. The tournament championship earned the Warriors a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program’s history. The team advanced past the opening round before falling to the tournament’s number-one seed.
Also representing Eastern Connecticut State University on the All-Conference First Team were senior attack Mo Deegan (Westport, Conn.), junior midfielder Kara Mastroianni (Newington, CT), sophomore midfielder Jenna Faiola (Billerica, MA) and senior defender Xiomara Lopez (Groton, CT).
     Plymouth State and Keene State each sent a duo of players to the First Team, while Rhode Island College added one to the squad. Junior attack Bethany Brown (Norwich, CT) and junior defender Meghan O’Neil (Scituate, MA) represented the Panthers, senior attach Michelle Mason (Fairport, NY) and junior midfielder Lauren Saunders (Fremont, NH) represented the Owls while sophomore attack Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, RI) represented the Anchorwomen.
The Second Team attack positions were filled by Keene State junior Kristal Lundegaard (Babylon, NY), Eastern Connecticut senior Ashley Able (Mystic, CT), Southern Maine sophomore Sarah Proulx (Hebron, ME) and Western Connecticut junior Ellie Champagne (Newton, CT).
     The Second Team midfield consisted of the Plymouth State duo of sophomore Amanda Spadafora (Saratoga Springs, NY) and junior Nicole Evans (Scituate, MA), Western Connecticut senior Jill Brown (Kings Park, NY), UMass Dartmouth junior Katelyn Sullivan (New Bedford, MA) and Southern Maine senior Emily Kirkland (Damariscotta, ME).
Keene State sophomore Melissa Gagnon (Saco, ME), Plymouth State sophomore Stephanie Blanchette (Sudbury, MA) and Western Connecticut senior Lara Ciosek (Wallingford, CT) represented the Second Team defenders while Keene State junior Mandy Gray (Sharon, MA) was named the Second Team goalie.
