Western ties Western New England, 2-2 in Colonials home opener

BOX SCORE

DANBURY, CT (Sep. 5) — After trailing 2-0 early on in the contest, the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team battle back to earn a 2-2 double-overtime tie with Western New England University at The WAC on a steamy Wednesday night.

The Golden Bears, 2-0-1, got on the scoreboard 1:55 into the contest when Chelsey Kuzio (Hampden, ME) lofted a ball over Caitlin Avery (East Hampton) from 30 yards out. Kuzio was set up with a pass from midfield from Tayler Mazurski (Wolcott, CT).

In the 18th minute, another miscue from the Colonials' defense put Western New England up, 2-0.

Mazurski took a free kick nearly 10 yards outside the box and the ball deflected off Western Connecticut's Samantha Trayer (Oakville, CT) into the back corner of the goal.

The Colonials, 2-0-1, got on the scoreboard with 6:43 left before the break when Lisa Sanzari (North Haven, CT) finished off a quick pass from Kelsey Chacho (Plainville, CT) from the end line. It was Sanzari's first goal of the season.

Ariana D'Aurio (Cheshire, CT) added her second marker of the season when she went through three Golden Bear defenders 2:30 into the second stanza. D'Aurio rattled off 11 shots on the night and the Colonials finished with a 27-11 advantage in shots at goal.

Avery made five saves for the Colonials while Briana Kubic (Blandford, MA) matched her with five stops for WNEU.

Western Connecticut plays host to Purchase College this Saturday, September 8. Game time is slated for 4 pm.
