Meerman sets new team standard in the 200 Free, Western improves in Day 2
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT (Feb. 18) — Sophomore Kathie Meerman (Danbury, CT) swam to new team record in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:59.51 as the Western Connecticut State University women's swimming team moved up in the standings during Day 2 of the New England Swimming Championships.
Meerman's record-breaking swim came as she swam the lead-off leg of the 800 Free Relay, an event in which Western finished in 8th place in a time of 8:21.28. Meerman continued her strong perfomance with a first place finish in the 100 Backstroke (1:00.19), and a second in the 50 Butterfly (:26.68).
Also scoring for the Colonials was Sophomore Danielle Leprine (New Fairfield, CT) with an eighth place finish in the 100 Breaststroke (1:10.61), as well as Western's 200 Medley Relay team which finished in 10th place (1:57.34).
Western improved four places after a disappointing 15th-place on opening day, and currently stands in 11th place with a total of 244 points.
The New England Championships conclude tomorrow at the Upper Valley Aquatics Center in White River Junction, Vermont. The morning preliminary swims begin at 10:00am with the championship final heats beginning at 5:30pm.
