MONTCLAIR STATE TOPS WESTERN CONNECTICUT, 31-6
McCoach, Jump Lead Senior-Laden Red Hawks to Victory
from the desk of Mike Scala - MSU SID

Montclair, NJ (11/10/07)
– Senior running back Ryan McCoach (Rockaway, NJ / Morris Hills) rand for 107 yards and two first-half touchdowns while senior quarterback Michael Jump (Toms River, NJ / Toms River South) threw for a pair of scores in the second half as Montclair State closed out its regular season with a 31-6 victory over Western Connecticut in an NJAC matchup at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

The victory capped off an 8-2 regular season (5-2 in the NJAC) for the Red Hawks as Montclair kept alive its hopes for an at-large berth in the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs which get underway next Saturday, November 17. Bids for the playoffs will be announced on Sunday. If Montclair State is not selected, it will then wait to see if it earns a spot in an ECAC Championship Game also slated for next week. That announcement will be made on Monday, November 12.

Sophomore quarterback James Williams (Wolcott, CT/Wolcott) threw for 223 yards and the lone touchdown as the Colonials closed out their season with their second straight loss to finish the year at 4-6 overall, 2-5 in the NJAC. WestConn is now 1-7 all time against Montclair State.

The Colonials took the first lead of the game as it moved 69 yards in seven plays. Williams connected with Allen Bowen Hamden, CT/Hamden) on gains of 11 and 13, respectively to move the ball to the MSU 46. Keith Rosedom (Stamford, CT/Westhill) added a 13-yard reception before pulling a second catch, this one a 30-yard grab for a touchdown as the Colonials led 6-0 with 5:48 left in the opening period. The extra point was missed.

Montclair State answered right back as Chris D’Andrea (Union, NJ/ Union) returned the kickoff 25 yards to the MSU 41. McCoach converted a third down with a nine-yard run and added a 12-yard scamper to bring the ball to the Colonial 30. Jump would completed passes to Jeff Papcun (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) and A.J. Letizia (Dumont, NJ/ Dumont) for 18 and 12-yards, respectively, the latter putting the ball down at the WestConn 1. McCoach then barreled in from a yard out to give MSU the lead 7-6 as Marco Capozzoli (Bloomfield, NJ / St. Joseph’s) converted the extra point with 1:48 to go.

In the second quarter, a fumble by the Colonials on a running play helped give Montclair great field position as Andrew Ackerman (Bloomfield, NJ /Bloomfield) came up with the recovery at the WestConn 16. McCoach would do all the work from there with four straight carries, the final another one-yard plunge as MSU increased its lead to 14-6 with 8:40 left in the first half.

After the Red Hawks took the eight-point lead into halftime, Cappozoli connected from 28-yards out to extend the lead to 17-6. The Colonials would punt on their next possession and Montclair went 70-yards in just four plays to increase its margin to 24-6. Jump capped off the drive as he found Letizia along the right sideline for the touchdown with 5:03 remaining in the third.

WestConn had a chance to close the gap on its next drive moving 52 yards in 16 plays over a seven-minute span that bridge the third and fourth quarters as the Colonials marched to the Montclair State 26. However, on 4th-and-5, Williams’ pass fell incomplete and the ball was turned over on downs.

Montclair would then capitalize with its final score of the game. After Jump found Omar Sevilla (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) for six yards on a 3rd-and-5, the senior signal caller found another classmate, wide receiver Brandon Fronjian (Palisades Park, NJ/ Palisades Park) along the right sideline for a 58-yard touchdown as a 31-6 Montclair State advantage with 10:04 left in the game.

McCoach, one of 23 Red Hawk seniors honored before the kickoff, carried 26 times. Jump was 12-of-26 in the game with Letizia and Fronjian each getting three for 65 and 45 yards, respectively. Fronjian had 72 yards receiving as MSU outgained the Colonials, 367-274 including a 135-51 edge on the ground.

Defensively for the Red Hawks, sophomore linebacker Cornell Hunt (North Brunswick, NJ / North Brunswick) and freshman defensive back Mario McLean (Montville, NJ / Montville) each collected 10 tackles while senior linebacker Russ Comune (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) had an outstanding game with nine tackles, including three for loss of 10 yards.

For Western Connecticut, Williams was 24-of-40 with Rosedom pulling in seven passes for 64 yards. Bowen had five for 74 with junior running back Jason Santiago (Cromwell, CT/Cromwell) rushed 11 times for 51 yards. Junior linebacker Chad Milling (Hartford, CT/Conrad) spearheaded the Colonials’ defense with 11 tackles, seven unassisted. Seniors John Hoke (Tomkins Cove, NY/North Rockland), Rick Jackson (Wallingford, NJ / Lyman Hall) and Michael Gregor (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) each finished with six tackles.

WESTCONN HOLDS ON TO DEFEAT BUFFALO STATE, 10-7
Wayne Neal ties school mark with fourth 100-yard game

DANBURY, CT (October 27, 2007) - A 25-yard field goal by Teddy Keyes (North Haven, CT) with 13:09 remaining in the game proved to be the game-winning kick and Western Connecticut State University held on to defeat SUNY Buffalo State College, 10-7 on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Keyes boot capped off a seven-play 45 yard drive and gave the Colonials, now 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, a 10-0 advantage.
WestConn raced out to a 7-0 lead following a 16-yard reception by John Zervos (Monroe, CT) from sophomore quarterback James Williams (Wolcott, CT) with 4:11 remaining in the first stanza.
Williams finished the day completing 19 of 30 passes for 266 yards, with one interception and the one touchdown.
Zervos was his number one target with four catches for 80 yards. Derrick Way (Norwalk, CT) collected a game-high six catches for 62 yards.
A driving rain storm held both offenses at bay for much of the game until the fourth quarter when both teams took advantage of calmer conditions.
The Bengals, 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC, drew within three points when Depew, NY natives senior quarterback Dan Aguilo and Bob Vescona hooked up for a seven-yard score with 1:03 left in the contest.
Anguilo went 10 of 25 for 140 yards, with one interception and the touchdown to Vescona.
WestConn freshman tailback Wayne Neal (Poughkeepsie, NY), already a four-time NJAC Offensive Rookie of the Week, tied a school record with his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season. He finished with 126 yards on 32 carries. With two games left in the season, he is tied with Scott Haney (1984), Mke Megura (1985) and Ben LaBelle (2000) for the coveted record.
Sammy Smith (Buffalo, NY) led the Bengals ground attack with 79 yards on 24 carries.
Defensively, the Colonials were led by senior free safety Kevin Marchant (East Lyme, CT) who had three sacks for a total 24 yards and five total tackles. James sparks Lions in a 42-21 Homecoming win
from the desk of Ann King - TCNJ SID

Ewing, NJ (10/20/07) – Sophomore quarterback Chris James (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) tossed a career-high four touchdowns passes as The College of New Jersey football team notched its sixth straight victory beating Western Connecticut University with a 42-21 on homecoming.

James was a modest 8-of-14 through the air for 179, but four of those completions put the Lions in the end zone. He also had one pass intercepted.

West Conn quarterback James Williams (Wolcott, CT/Wolcott) also had a big game passing as the sophomore went 32-for-50 for 330 yards and three touchdowns and one interception.

The Colonials scored all 21 of their points in the second half and that marked the most points scored on TCNJ’s top-ranked defense this season.

In addition to finding success using James’ arm passing, the Lions had 268 yards on the ground with four different players getting more than 40 led by sophomore Lee Jones (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) with 52 yards on 10 carries.

The Lions opened the scoring on a 26-yard field goal by Matt Dalessio (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), which was set up by a fake attempt earlier in the drive. That score came 4:42 into the game.

TCNJ got on the board again thanks to a trick play as James got the ball back after a fake double-reverse and launched a strike to receiver Cameron Richardson (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) that covered 51 yards and after Dalessio made the point after the hosts had a 10-0 lead.

Dalessio booted a 25 yarder to open the scoring in the second quarter before classmate Dan Dornacker (Jersey City, NJ/Brick) increased the advantage as he bulled his way in from the seven. A successful PAT then made it a 20-0 game.

With just over a minute remaining before the intermission, the Lions added another score as James threw a 32-yard pass to Austin Misiura (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel). TCNJ added the two-point conversion as Zach Rinaldi (Burlington, NJ/Florence) went in untouched around the left end after a bobbled snap sending the hosts into the half with a 28-0 lead.

The Colonials came out throwing in the new half as Derrick Way (Norwalk, CT/Norwich Free Academy) made a diving catch over the middle on a 14-yard pass from Williams. Teddy Keyes (North Haven, CT/North Haven) kicked the extra point trimming TCNJ’s lead to 28-7.

Three minutes later the Lions got the score back as James hit Erik Hendrickson (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere) on the near sideline on the pass covering 52 yards. Dalessio then tacked on the point after.

Williams again got West Conn on the board with 51 seconds left in the third finding Keith Rosedon (Stamford, CT/Westhill) from 53-yards out and following Keyes’ extra point the Colonials trailed 35-14.

In the fourth, the teams traded 11-yard touchdown passes as TCNJ got its as James found Chris Updyke (Lambertville, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and the Colonials got theirs as Williams completed a pass to Way.

Lion defensive lineman Joe King (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) finished with a pair of sacks, while Joe Spahn (Burlington, NJ/Florence) paced TCNJ with eight tackles. Andrew Larkin (Hamilton, Square, NJ/Notre Dame) added to the defensive effort with an interception.

Defensively for the Colonials, Chad Milling Hartford, CT/Conrad) and John Hoke (Tomkins Cove, NY/North Rockland) each finished with 10 tackles.

West Conn running back Wayne Neal (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie) led all rushers with 94 yards on 15 attempts.

WESTCONN DROPS HEARTBREAKER AT CORTLAND STATE IN FINAL SECONDS
from the desk of Fran Elia - Cortland SID

CORTLAND, N.Y. - (Oct. 13, 2007) - Junior quarterback Ray Miles (Port Byron) threw three fourth-quarter touchdown passes to junior Eric Hajnos (Grand Island), including the game-winner with 12.4 seconds left, as Cortland rallied for a 27-26 win over Western Connecticut State. The Red Dragons improved to 5-1 and maintained its lead in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with a 4-0 record. The Colonials dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in NJAC action.

Miles completed 31-of-46 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns. His 31 completions are a career high and tied for the third-highest single-game total in school history. Senior Keith Greene (Brentwood) made nine catches for 70 yards, senior tight end Paul Caughell (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) grabbed seven passes for 73 yards and Hajnos finished with six receptions for 61 yards. Freshman linebacker Brian Haas (East Aurora/St. Francis) and junior linebacker Josh Fodrowski (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley) led the Red Dragons with nine tackles apiece.

Western Connecticut sophomore quarterback James Williams (Wolcott, CT) completed 16-of-27 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns, including two scores by sophomore Derrick Way (Norwalk, CT/Norwich Free Academy). Junior linebacker Chad Milling (Hartford, CT/Conrad) finished with a game-high 12 tackles and senior safety John Hoke (Tomkins Cove/North Rockland) recorded 10 tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.

Western took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on an 11-yard pass from Williams to junior Allen Bowen (Hamden, CT). A 22-yard pass from Williams to Bowen on 4th-and-12 at the Cortland 27-yard line kept the drive alive. Cortland pulled to within 7-6 before halftime on two of senior Matthew Mintz's (Lawrence) three field goals. He hit a 28-yarder with 9:25 left and a 25-yarder with 2:04 remaining in the half.

The Colonials scored on their first possession of the third quarter to take a 14-6 lead. On 3rd-and-15 at the Western 25-yard line, Willilams threw a short pass to Way, who was able to break around the right side and race untouched down the sideline for a 75-yard touuchdown. Mintz made a 23-yard field goal with 6:18 left in the third quarter to cut Cortland's deficit to 14-9. On Western's next possession, Cortland fumbled a punt return. The Colonials proceeded to drive 19 yards on three plays, capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by freshman Wayne Neal (Poughkeepsie), to take a 20-9 lead. A two-point conversion run failed.

Cortland started its comeback with an 8-play, 55-yard scoring drive. Hajnos finished the drive with a 22-yard touchdown catch in the left corner, although a two-point pass failed and Western's lead was 20-15.  Later in the quarter, Cortland was pinned at its 13-yard line after a quick-kick by Williams on fourth down. The Red Dragons drove to the Western 29-yard line before Miles had a pass intercepted. Pass interference, however, was called on the play and two plays later Miles again found Hajnos on a flag pattern for a 5-yard touchdown and Cortland's first lead of the game. The two-point pass failed and Cortland led 21-20 with 3:38 remaining.

Western started its next drive on its own 29-yard line and quickly moved up field. Williams connected with freshman Keith Rosedom (Stamford, CT/Westhill) on a 43-yard pass on second down and later in the drive threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Way to give the Colonials a 26-21 lead with 1:33 left. The two-point conversion pass was broken up by Cortland senior cornerback Greg Steward (Elmont/Sewanhaka).

Cortland freshman Will Loeb (Pine Bush) returned the ensuing kickoff 23 yards to the Western 49-yard line. Passes of 22 and nine yards to Greene moved the ball to the 18-yard line with less than a minute left. An incomplete pass set up a 4th-and-1 for the Red Dragons with 47 seconds left, and Cortland converted on a 5-yard pass from Miles to Hajnos. An 8-yard pass to Greene pushed the ball to the 5-yard line 29.4 seconds left, but Cortland lost a yard on a Javaris Brown (Cromwell, CT) sack with 23 seconds left.  After an incompletion on third down, the Red Dragons faced 4th-and-3 at the 6-yard line. Miles hit Hajnos on a slant pattern in the middle of the end zone for the winning touchdown, although the ensuing two-point run failed.

Western started its final drive on its own 28-yard line and was able to run one play. The Colonials tried a hook-and-lateral play with two pitches, the second of which set up Way for a run down the left sidelines before being tackled at the Cortland 36-yard line as time expired.

ALLAN BOWEN CATCHES GAME-WINNER IN WESTCONN'S 27-20 VICTORY OVER WILLIAM PATERSON
WestConn's Wayne Neal Leads All Rushers with 149 Yards

DANBURY, CT (October 6, 2007) - Allan Bowen (Hamden, CT) caught a 16-yard pass from sophomore quarterback James Williams (Wolcott, CT) with 7:33 remaining in the fourth quarter to lift Western Connecticut State University to a 27-20 victory over William Paterson University on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The Colonials, 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, took a 20-6 lead on a 17-yard run by Derrick Way (Norwalk, CT) with 12:44 remaining in the third quarter, the contest had all the makings of a laugher.  Way had two catches for 66 yards also on Saturday.
William Paterson, now 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the NJAC, did what most teams in the NJAC would do and battled back, all the way back.
It drew within seven points after Ira Guilford (Jersey City, NJ) dove across the goal line from two yards out with 7:08 left in the third quarter. He finished the day with 99 yards on 38 carried and two scores. Guilford scored on a nine-yard run to open the second quarter.
WestConn squandered its 14-point lead as the third quarter ended when Joel Rivera (Hoboken, NJ) caught a 32-yard pass from Dan Lamego (North Arlington, NJ) and following Ricky Krautman's (Franklin Lakes, NJ) extra point, the game was tied, 20-20.
Lemego completed 10 of 19 passes for 152 yards on the day. Rivera led all receivers with four catches for 64 yards.
With 8:14 remaining in the final stanza, Lemego fumbled an exchange and WestConn's James Mitchell (New Haven, CT) recovered the ball to give the Colonials prime field position on WPU's 19 yard line. Two plays later Williams found Bowen open for the winning score and their defense would have to hold down the stretch.
On the Pioneers' final possession, WestConn's junior cornerback Mike Negast (Haledon, NJ) preserved the victory when he caused Rivera to lose control of the ball in the back of the end zone with 2:38 left on the clock.
WestConn freshman tailback Wayne Neal (Poughkeepsie, NY), a two-time NJAC Offensive Rookie of the Week, rushed 22 times for 149 yards and scored a one-yard touchdown to put the Colonials on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter.
Williams completed 11 of 23 passes for 185 yards and was intercepted twice, both on deflections in the first half.
Defensively, the Colonials were led by senior free safety John Hoke (Tomkins Cove, NY) had 11 tackles, pass break up and a tackle for a loss. Ryan Delage (Cheshire, CT) collected eight tackles including a sack and 2.5 tackles for a loss on the afternoon.
Mike Lemego (North Arlington, NJ) the younger brother of WPU's quarterback, Dan, led the Pioneers with nine tackles and had two of the Pioneers' three sacks on the day.
WestConn continues its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule next Saturday at Cortland State. Kick off is slated for 1 p.m.

NJAC TO ADD MORRISVILLE STATE COLLEGE AND SUNY BROCKPORT
AS AFFILIATE FOOTBALL MEMBERS IN 2008-09

Pitman, NJ—The New Jersey Athletic Conference announced today that Morrisville State College and the State University of New York at Brockport will become affiliate football members of the NJAC beginning in the 2008-09 academic year. The addition of both institutions became official following successful votes on each institutional membership application by both the NJAC Presidents Council and the league Board of Athletic Administrators.

“We are extremely excited about the future additions of Morrisville State College and SUNY Brockport to the NJAC beginning in the 2008 season,” said Terry Small, Commissioner of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. “Our conference has benefited greatly from the additions of Cortland, Western Connecticut, and Buffalo State as affiliate members in football. By adding two more outstanding programs, we will be able to align many of the Division III public university programs in the Northeast while helping to ease the burden of scheduling that many of our institutions have experienced throughout the years.”

Currently in its first year of the NCAA Division III provisional membership process, Morrisville State College reinstated its football program in 1997 after a 40-year hiatus. As a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), the Mustangs captured Northeast Football Conference championships in 1999, 2002, and 2003, while earning NJCAA Region III titles in those same three seasons. Led by 10th-year head coach Terry Dow, Morrisville posted a 57-36 overall record in NJCAA play from 1997 to 2005.

“On behalf of everyone at Morrisville State, I would like to thank each of the New Jersey Athletic Conference institutions for the opportunity to participate in what is generally recognized as one of the finest conferences in NCAA Division III,” said Greg Carroll, Director of Athletics at Morrisville State College. “The new alignment should not only strengthen college football in New York State, but also create exciting rivalries between our New Jersey and New York campuses. While Morrisville is still in its NCAA infancy, football has a strong tradition and heritage on our campus. This is just the beginning of yet another chapter in that long history.”

Established in 1947, the SUNY Brockport football program competed as an independent for 56 seasons before becoming a member of the Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC) in 2004. The Golden Eagles, who have earned four NCAA Division III Tournament berths since 2000, captured the ACFC Championship in 2005. Led by 12th-year head coach Rocco Salomone, Brockport has posted a 76-46-1 overall record during his tenure.

”Brockport is thrilled to be joining the NJAC,” said Lin Case, Director of Athletics at SUNY Brockport. “We feel that this is a great opportunity to join one of the elite football conferences in Division III. We look forward to competing in the same conference with many of the schools already on our schedule, and we are also pleased to be joining our sister SUNY schools in the same conference. This is a great step forward for our college, the athletic department, and Brockport football.”

The addition of Morrisville State College and SUNY Brockport to the New Jersey Athletic Conference in 2008-09 will increase the league’s football membership to 10 institutions including full-conference members: Kean University, Montclair State University, Rowan University, The College of New Jersey and William Paterson University. The conference will also feature five affiliate football members in: SUNY Cortland, Western Connecticut State University, Buffalo State College, Morrisville State College, and SUNY Brockport.

The New Jersey Athletic Conference Board of Athletic Administrators has initiated the development of a 10-team composite block conference schedule for the 2008 season. Each NJAC team will play a nine-game league schedule, with the conference champion receiving an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

WESTCONN FOOTBALL HELMET GETS A FACELIFT

DANBURY, CT - (June 26, 2007) - The Western Connecticut State University football helmet received a facelift this week when Head Coach John Burrell introduced the new "W" and "Colonials" logo on each side of the metallic copper head gear.  Two blue titan-style stripes adorn the top of the helmet as well.

In 2002, WestConn changed its school colors to dark blue and metallic copper with a white trace the football helmet followed suit.  For the past five seasons, the Colonials donned a solid copper helmet with one solid blue strip dividing the two sides.
