ROWAN’S SILVA & CORTLAND’S HAAS NAMED
NJAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

Pitman, NJ—Rowan University senior wide receiver Phil Silva (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and SUNY Cortland junior defensive lineman Adam Haas (East Aurora, NY/St. Francis) have been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Football Players of the Year respectively for the 2005 season.

A three-time all-conference selection, Silva has tallied 33 receptions for 465 yards and eight touchdowns for a Profs squad that captured its second consecutive NJAC Championship while earning its second straight trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. Silva currently is tied for second in the NJAC in touchdown scoring with an average of 5.3 points per game. He also ranks seventh in the league in receiving yards per game (51.7) and eighth in the NJAC in receptions per game (3.67). An instrumental cog in a Rowan offensive unit that leads the NJAC in both total offense per game (423.7) and passing offense per game (269.2), Silva and the Profs will open NCAA Tournament play on November 19 when they host Wilkes in a first round game in Glassboro.

A three-time NJAC all-conference selection and a two-time NJAC Defensive Player of the Week honoree in 2005, Haas has registered 50 tackles, 14.5 tackles for a loss, and 10.5 sacks for a Red Dragons squad that posted a 7-2 regular season record while earning an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament. He currently leads the conference and ranks sixth nationally in sacks (1.20 per game), while ranking fifth in the league in tackles for a loss (1.61 per game) and 21st in tackles per game (5.6). Haas has been a consistent performer on a Cortland defense that leads the NJAC and ranks second in NCAA Division III by allowing just 44.1 rushing yards per game. The Red Dragons will open NCAA Tournament play on November 19 when they  travel to face Hobart in a first round contest.

Kean University freshman wide receiver Chase Long (Newark, NJ/Barringer) became the second consecutive Cougar to be selected as NJAC Offensive Rookie of the Year. A week one Offensive Rookie of the Week selection, he currently ranks 10th in the NJAC in touchdown scoring with an average of 3.6 points per game. Long finished his freshman campaign with 30 receptions for 422 yards and six touchdowns.

A four-time NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Week selection, Rowan freshman linebacker Zach Garren (Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) was named NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Year after posting individual statistics of 61 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, and two interceptions. Garren currently ranks 14th in the league in tackles with an average of 6.8 per game.

Rowan University head coach Jay Accorsi was named NJAC Coach of the Year by his peers for the second consecutive season after leading the Profs to an 8-1 regular season record and the 2005 NJAC Championship. In four seasons at the helm of the Rowan program, Accorsi has produced a 35-8 overall record while leading the Profs to three NJAC Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
