Western men fall at Eastern, 74-61

WILLIMANTIC, CT (Jan. 17) — Senior DaQuan Brooks (Atlanta, GA) scored a game-high 33 points, but the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team suffered its second loss in a row, falling 74-61 at Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday evening.

Four Eastern Connecticut State University players contributed points during a 12-1 run in the second half as the Warriors to remained undefeated in the  Little East Conference with a 74-61 men’s basketball win over Western Connecticut State University Tuesday night at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

Ranked No. 25 nationally, Eastern (13-1, 6-0 Little East) won its 12th straight game while Western (13-3, 4-2 Little East) lost its second straight after winning 11 in a row. Eastern remains a game ahead of Keene State College, which downed visiting Plymouth State University, 71-61 Tuesday night. Western slips two games off the pace and is now tied with two-time defending LEC tournament champion Rhode Island College, which trimmed visiting Massachusetts Dartmouth, 61-57.

In a re-match of last year’s LEC tournament semfinal, won by Eastern,  the Warriors erased a ten-point first-half deficit with a 15-2 burst that gave the hosts their first lead since the opening basket. Leading by three at halftime, Eastern pushed the lead to eight before holding the Colonials scoreless from the floor and to just one point in over five minutes to open up a 15-point, 51-36 lead with nine minutes left.

Trailing by double digits most of the second half, Western got as close as six with 2:30 left when senior guard DaQuan Brooks (Atlanta, GA) scored all of his team’s nine points in a 9-0 run before the Warriors  iced the game with seven straight points on five free throws and an inside bucket by senior guard Nick Nedwick (Irvington, NY).

During the decisive 12-1 run early in the second half, Nedwick scored five points, senior forward Jamie Kohn (Columbia) four and senior forward Hamilton Levy (Woodbury) and junior forward Chris Robitaille (Canton) two each. Robitaille improved his nation-leading field goal percentage to 71.6 by canning  seven of eight field goals.

Nedwick led Eastern with 20 points – sinking all nine of his free throws, seven of which came in the second half – and also pulled down seven rebounds. Robitaille added 19 points and Kohn and Levy 12 each. Kohn also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. The Warriors, who shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the second half, commited only ten turnovers in the game, equaling their second-lowest total of the year.

Brooks, the two-time LEC Player-of-the-Year, improved his LEC-leading scoring average with 33 points (16-for-26 from the floor), but scored 16 of his points in the last eight minutes with his team down by as many as 15.

Eastern visits the University of Southern Maine Saturday at 3 p.m
