Western defeats Plymouth State, 90-70 and earns second seed and first-round bye in upcoming Little East Tournament

DANBURY, CT (Feb. 18) — On an afternoon when four graduating senior were honored before the game, junior guard Ryan Pelletier (Wolcott, CT) gave the Western Connecticut State University a reason to believe the future looks bright. He scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Colonials defeated Plymouth State University, 90-70 and earned the second seed, and first round bye, for the upcoming Little East Conference Tournament, which begins on Tuesday.

The Colonials will face the winner of the #3 Rhode Island College versus #6 Plymouth State Quarterfinal match at Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday, February 24 at 7:30 pm. Host and LEC regular-season champions Eastern Connecticut will play the winner of the #4 Keene State College versus #5 UMass Dartmouth first-round game at 5:30 pm on Friday at Geissler Gym. The LEC Championship game will be Saturday afternoon at a time to be determined.

Pelletier connected on 7-of-13 shots from the field including 5-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc, in 25 minutes of action.

Senior DaQuan Brooks (Atlanta, GA), a prime candidate to be the Little East Conference Player of the Year for the third straight season, scored 13 points, but handed out a season-high 15 assists. He also pulled down four boards and had a pair of steals.

Junior Michael Jensen (Gales Ferry, CT) and senior Gary Robinson (Torrington, CT) added 17 and 11 points, respectively for the winners.

Western fourth season, Michael Kennedy (Newtown, CT) contributed eight points and six caroms to the cause.

Petey Skevas (Wethersfield, CT) had an outstanding game back in his home state, scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field. He also had six assists and four rebounds for the Panthers.

The Colonials, 20-5 overall and 10-4 in the LEC, held a 13-point lead twice in the first half, the final time coming following a pair of freebies by Jensen with 4:05 left in the first stanza. They went into the break leading, 44-34.

The Panthers, 9-15 overall and 4-10 in the league, scored 13 of the second half's first 20 points to draw within four points, 51-47 following a lay up by Skevas.

Western outs cored the visitors 39-13 the rest of the way.
