Brooks pours in 29 to lead Western over Richard Stockton, 69-63
DANBURY, CT (Nov. 25) — Senior DaQuan Brooks (Atlanta, GA) scored a game-high 29 points and handed out six assists to lead the Western Connecticut State University men’s basketball team to a 69-63 victory over the visitors from Richard Stockton College Friday night at Feldman Arena.
Also scoring in double figures for Western was senior Mark Redding (Waterbury, CT) with 12 points. Redding and freshman Luis Bridtter (Stamford, CT) led the Colonials on the boards with nine rebounds each.
For Richard Stockton, Kevin Johnson (Paulsboro, NJ) score 21 points, followed by DiAndre Brown (Sicklerville, NJ) with 15 points. Brown and Bill McDonough (Spring Lake, NJ) each grabbed nine rebounds for the Ospreys.
Richard Stockton took control of the game early, racing out to a 14-4 lead after six minutes of play. The Colonials finally found an offensive rhythm and drew even at 21-all on a 3-pointer by junior Ryan Pelletier (Wolcott, CT) with seven minutes remaining in the half. The scoring remained tight for the remainder of the half, but with six seconds left before intermission, Brooks was fouled with Western trailing by one, and the Richard Stockton bench was called for a Technical foul. Brooks stepped to the line and hit all four free-throws, giving the Colonials a 34-31 lead at the half.
Western came storming out of the locker room to start the second half and quickly established a 13-point lead following a Brooks jumper at the 15:09 mark. The Colonial lead remained in double digits for the next five minutes, but with Western leading 54-44, Richard Stockton went on a 13-4 run to close the gap to one point with just over four minutes remaining. Brooks then scored seven unanswered points for the Colonials, to push the lead back to 65-57 with just under one minute to play. The Ospreys scored six points in the final minute, but Brooks hit four free-throws down the stretch to secure the 69-63 victory for Western.
For the game, Western held a 43-39 advantage in rebounds, but also had more turnovers, 13-8. Western finished shooting 40.3% from the floor, while Richard Stockton managed only 39.7%.
With the win, Western improves to 3-1 on the season, while Richard Stockton College falls to 1-4. Action at the Hampton Inn Classic continues at Feldman Arena on Saturday, November 26th, when Richard Stockton and Johnson & Wales face off at 1:00pm. The Colonials will be in action again on Sunday, November 27th, when they host Johnson & Wales University at Feldman Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00pm.
