Western Connecticut runs past Southern Maine, 88-58

DANBURY, CT (Dec. 10) — Senior Gary Robinson (Torrington, CT) scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University men’s basketball team to an 88-58 victory over Little East Conference rival Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for Western were junior Ryan Pelletier (Wolcott, CT) with 13 points, senior DaQuan Brooks (Atlanta, GA) with 12 points, and sophomore James Barnes (Middletown, CT) who added 10.

For Southern Maine, Jeremy Jackson Laplace, LA led all players with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Alex Kee (Bath, ME) added 12 points for the Huskies, now 6-3 overall and 0-2 in the LEC.

After Southern Maine moved out to and early 3-2 lead, Western held the Huskies to a single point over the next four minutes to claim a 10-4 lead at the 14:30 mark following a lay up by senior Mark Redding (Waterbury, CT).

The Colonials continued to pad their margin, taking a 19-10 lead after a pair of free throws by junior Pelletier , and led by 15 points, 28-13, after a lay up by sophomore Joseph Setaro (North Haven, CT)

An acrobatic lay in by Brooks with under a minute remaining in the half gave the Colonials their largest lead of the half, 18 points, before a free throw by Southern Maine’s Brian Alexander (Bradenton, FL) in the closing seconds made the score 40-23 at intermission.

In the second half, Western led by at least 30 points for virtually the final 6:49. It had a 13-0 advantage on points scored off turnovers over the final 20 minutes and its bench out scored the Huskies', 18-5 in the second stanza.

For the game, Western held a 44-40 advantage in rebounds, had the edge in assists, 23-16, and forced Southern Maine into 15 turnovers, while committing only eight.  Western finished shooting 47.8% from the floor, while the Huskies managed only 38.7%.

With the win, Western improves to 9-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Little East Conference. 

The Colonials return to action on Monday, December 12, when they host Clark University in a non-conference game at 6:30pm.
