Caroline Brasa nets 17 points but Western drops third straight game

SPRINGFIELD, MA (Jan. 1) —Western Connecticut State University freshman forward Caroline Brasa (East Hartford, CT) scored a game-high 17 points in Sunday's 57-47 loss to Skidmore College in the opening round of the Hampton Inn Naismith Classic at Springfield College on Sunday night.

The loss was the third straight for the Colonials after opening the season with seven straight wins.

Skidmore, 6-1, was led by a balanced scoring attack as Christina Gargiso and Jordyn Wartss each canned 10 points for the Thoroughbreds. Angela Botiba and Megan Gaugler added nine points apiece for the winners, which will face host Springfield College in the championship game tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 pm.

Western will take on Roger Williams University, which fell to The Pride, 71-45, earlier on the Sunday, at 1:30 pm on Monday afternoon in the consolation game.

No other Colonials' player scored in double figures with Taylor Nkonoki (Middletown, CT) and Sciarra Brandt (Thomaston, CT) contributing eight and seven points, respectively.

Senior guard Stephanie Slonski (Griswold, CT) added six points and led all players with 10 rebounds.
