Taylor Nkonoki nets team-high 17 points, but Keene State defeats Western's women, 69-60 on Tuesday night

KEENE, NH (Jan. 10) — Junior guard Taylor Nkonoki (Middletown, CT) scored a team-high 17 points, but it was not enough to overcome Keene State College as the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to the Owls, 69-60 at Spaulding Gym on Tuesday night.

Western, now 10-4 overall and 2-2 in the Little East Conference, raced out to a nine-point advantage, 21-12, following a three-pointer from sophomore Chelsea Mone (Bristol, CT) with 8:52 remaining in the first stanza.

Keene State, 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the league, then scored the final 15 points in the first half to take a 27-21 lead into the locker room.

Sophomore Caroline Brasa (East Hartford, CT) capped off a traditional three-point play to send the Colonials back into the lead, 30-29, 3:31 in the second half.

Junior Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) buried one from beyond the arc with 7:00 left to draw even, 48-48. It was the game's eighth and final tie of the contest.

The Owls took over from there, scoring the game's next 11 points capped off by a layup and the freebie by Courtney Cirillo with 3:31 left.

KSC was led by Siobhan Carnell who scored 19 points while Cirillo and Carly Kiernan added 11 points apiece for the winners.

Joining Nkonoki in double digits was Nicole Eanniello (Danbury, CT) and Zilnicki who contributed 11 and 10 markers, respectively.

Senior Stephanie Slonski (Griswold, CT) was held to just three points, but dished out a game-high eight assists for the Colonials.

Western continues four-game road trip when it travels to Plymouth State University this Saturday, January 14 for a 1 pm meeting with the Panthers.
