Melissa DiNino double-double lifts Western to a 67-60 win over Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, NH (Jan. 14) — Freshman center Melissa DiNino (Waterbury, CT) recorded a double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team claimed a 67-60 win over Little East Conference rival Plymouth State Saturday afternoon in New Hampshire.

Junior Carly Murphy (Wolcott, Conn.) and freshman Melissa DiNino (Waterbury, Conn.) each recorded double-doubles Saturday afternoon as Western Connecticut State University defeated Plymouth State University, 67-60, in Little East Conference women’s basketball action at Foley Gymnasium.

Murphy tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds and DiNino added 13 points and 10 boards off the Colonials bench.  They were two of four players to reach double figures in scoring as senior Stephanie Slonski (Griswold, Conn.) contributed 12 points and sophomore Sciarra Brandt (Thomaston, Conn.) chipped in with 11.  Western improves to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in the Little East.

Junior Kellie Walsh (Londonderry, N.H.) led all scorers with 18 points for the Panthers, while junior Katie Seraikas (Concord, N.H) added a double-double of her own with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  The Panthers suffered their fifth straight defeat and fell to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

The upset-minded Panthers pulled out to a seven-point lead midway through the first half, but Western went on a 18-4 burst to turn the tide and assume a seven-point advantage with just over a minute left in the half.  PSU bounced back to cut the margin to three points at the break, 33-30.

The visitors opened up the second half with a 12-5 run to get the lead up to double digits, 45-35. It was a 12-point Colonials lead with six minutes to play when PSU made a rally to pull to within five points, 58-53, with two minutes to play.  Western held off the last Panther surge, making 7-of-8 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Western connected on 48 percent from the field while holding PSU to a 28 percent shooting clip.  Rebounds ended up even at 41-apiece.

Both teams play their in-state LEC rivals on the road this Tuesday, Plymouth State traveling to Keene State and Western Connecticut visiting Eastern Connecticut.
