Caroline Brasa and Sciarra Brandt combine for 35 points, but Western cannot hold on at UMass Dartmouth, 60-57

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA (Feb. 4) — Freshman Caroline Brasa (East Hartford, CT) and Sciarra Brandt (Thomaston, CT) combined for 35 points, but the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team could not hold on for the victory at UMass Dartmouth and eventually fell to the Corsairs, 60-57 at Tripp Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

UMass Dartmouth had four players reach double figures in scoring with Colleen Moriarty going for 18 points and Erika Bornemann adding 16 markers in the victory. Stephanie Houtman and Kelsey Garrity contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively for the Corsairs, now 14-7 overall and 5-5 in the Little East Conference.

Western, now 13-8 overall and tied with UMD in fourth place in the LEC at 5-5. The third and fourth seeds are honored with the chance to host a first-round game in the upcoming LEC Tournament at the end of February.

In the first half, the lead changed hands 11 times and the score was tied on two occasions. The Colonials held a five-point advantage three different times, the final one coming with 10:11 left in the stanza, 15-10, following a jumper by Brandt.

The Corsairs drew within two points, 29-27, at the break when Colleen Moriarty buried a lay up with four ticks remaining on the clock.

For the majority of the second half, UMass Dartmouth held a lead, including one that grew as large as eight points, 51-43, when Houtman hit two free throws with 7:41 left in the contest.

The Colonials scored 14 of the game's next 18 points to take a two-point lead, 57-55, following a jumper by Brandt with 2:51 remaining.

After the game's sixth deadlock on the front end of a two freebies from Garrity, the Corsairs took the lead for good when she nailed the back end with 1:42 left in regulation.

Western plays host to cross-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Jam the 'O' Night on Tuesday night. Tip off is slated for 5:30 pm with the men to follow against the Warriors at 7:30.
