Carly Murphy scores 22 in Western's 89-73 win over Salem State

SALEM, MA (Nov. 19) — Junior Carly Murphy (Wolcott, CT) scored 22 points and junior Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) added 20 to lead the 3-0 Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to an 89-73 win over Salem State Saturday afternoon.

Western Connecticut State used a late run to race past the Salem State Lady Vikings 89-73 in the championship game of the 2011 Salem State Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon. WCSU improved to 3-0 on the season with the win, while SSU dropped to 1-2.

The Colonials led 51-49 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the game, as neither team led by more than six to that point. Over the next four minutes, WCSU's Nicole Eanniello (Danbury, CT) scored 10 points to lead a 13-2 run that gave the Colonials a commanding 64-51 advantage with 8 minutes left. The Vikings would get no closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Western Connecticut State shot a sizzling 59.3% in the second half, outscoring SSU 52-38 in the final 20 minutes. The Colonials hit 6 of their 7 three-point attempts after intermission, after going 1-11 in the first half. Carly Murphy (Wolcott, CT) led the way with 22 points and was named tournament MVP. Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, MA) added 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Eanniello finished with 12.

Salem State was led by Breanna Comeau (Amesbury, MA), who finished with a game-high 25 points and a team-high 9 rebounds. Rachael Carter (Merricmack, NH) added 16 for the Vikings, while Ginny Fleming (Peabody, MA) finished with 10.

The first half was a see-saw affair, with the lead changing hands five times, and the teams frequently exchanging baskets. With game tied at 29, Western Connecticut used an 8-2 run to take its largest lead, 37-31, and took a 37-35 lead into the halftime locker room.

Rivier College Beat City College of New York 77-63 in the consolation game.

Next up for Salem State is a road game at Tufts University on November 29th.
