Five Colonials score in double figures in win over Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, CT (Nov. 29) —Senior Stephanie Slonski (Griswold, Conn.) scored 18 and dished out 12 assists with seven rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University women’s basketball team to an 83-69 victory at Connecticut College Tuesday night.
 
The Colonials remain perfect at 5-0 with the win, while the Camels fall to 3-1 with the setback.

Amber Litwinko (Kensington, Conn.) chipped in with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. Juniors Nicole Eanniello (Danbury, Conn.) and Carly Murphy (Wolcott, Conn.) both had 10 points for the winning side.

Connecticut College sophomore Tara Gabelman (Irvington, N.Y.) poured in a game-high 21 points with 12 rebounds en route to the 10th double-double of her career. Carlee Smith (Willimantic, Conn.) finished with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists for the hosts.

Junior Jeanna Dunleavy (Chatham, N.J.) added 13 points and four rebounds for the Camels, converting 3-of-4 shots from the field and all six attempts at the charity stripe.

The Colonials carried a 32-28 lead at the half and used a 7-to-0 run in the early stages of the second stanza to make it a 49-35 game. Litwinko scored all seven of the points during the key stretch and knocked down a jumper with 12:09 remaining to cap the rally.

Later on in the half, Shinall netted a three with 2:02 to go to pull the Camels to within nine at 71-62.

But Slonski scored seven of the teams’ last 12 points on the foul line and the visitors were able to hold on for the 83-69 victory. 

While the Camels lost the game, the stat-sheet showed some positive signs for the future. The hosts held a 48-to-34 advantage on the backboards. Connecticut College also converted at an 80% clip at the foul line, knocking down 20-of-25 shots from the charity stripe.

Western plays host to Trinity College on Thursday, December 1. Thursday night will be "Jam the "O" Night" with contests and give aways throughout the game.
