Courtney Cochran scores 34 to lead Southern Maine over Western 77-76 in OT
DANBURY, CT (Dec. 10) — Four different Colonials scored in double figures, but Southern Maine's Courtney Cochran (Waite, ME) led all scorers with 34 points and the visiting Huskies defeated the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team, 77-76, in overtime Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
Cochran also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and connected on 13 of 19 shots from the field against the two-time defending Little East Conference champions.
Junior Nicole Eanniello (Danbury, CT) led the Western offensive attack with 16 points, followed by junior Carly Murphy (Wolcott, CT) with 15.
Senior Stephanie Slonski (Griswold, CT) with 13, and senior Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) with 12 points.
Slonski handed out a game-high nine assists, while Murphy and sophomore Sciarra Brandt (Thomaston, CT) each grabbed eight rebounds for the Colonials.
Senior Nicole Garland (Portland, ME) was the only other Southern Maine player in double figures with 16 points. Cochran had a game-high 13 rebounds to record a double-double, with Haley Jordan (Falmouth, ME) pulling down 12 boards.
Western began the game struggling from the floor, scoring only three points in the game’s first eight minutes, as Southern Maine took a 10-3 lead.
A three-pointer by sophomore Brandt narrowed the gap to 10-6, but the Huskies maintained their lead over the next ten minutes.
Western took its first lead of the game, 22-21, with two minutes remaining in the half, but Southern Maine scored the final five points of the half to take a 26-22 lead going into the locker room at inter mission.
The game was tied nine different times in the second stanza, the final time came on a lay in from Slonski with 38 second remaining, but she could not covert from the line after Jordan fouled her on the drive to the bucket.
A turnover by Eanniello and a missed lay up by Southern Maine's Jordan Grant (Concord, NH) kept the game knotted and produced the extra frame.
The Huskies scored 12 of their overtime points in the paint including five lay ins by Cochran.
Southern Maine, 6-3 overall and now 1-1 in the Little East Conference, took a four-point lead on the front end of two free throws my by Jordan with 14 seconds remaining.
Western's Murphy converted from inside with three seconds remaining and went to the line with her team down 77-75. She attempted to purposely miss the free throw, but it rolled around and through the net.
For the game, Southern Maine held a 45-39 advantage in rebounds, but committed 24 turnovers compared to 16 turnovers for Western. Southern Maine finished shooting 47.3% from the floor, while the Colonials only managed 37.1 %.
With the loss, Western falls to 7-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Little East Conference. The Colonials take a break for final exams and the Holidays and return to action on Sunday, January 1, when they travel to play in a tournament hosted by Springfield College and will face Skidmore College at 7:30pm. .
