from the desks of B.L. Elfring and Christina Cracolici - USM Sports Information

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Kristin Degou (Newburyport, Mass.) scored a game-high 14 points to lead three players in double figures as the Keene State College Owls defeated the Western Connecticut State University Colonials 56-40 Friday night in the first semifinal game of the 2007 Little East Conference Tournament. The tournament is being played at the Warren Hill Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Southern Maine.

The win moves the second-seeded Owls, now 21-5 overall, into Saturday's championship game against the winner of the second semifinal game between top-seeded Southern Maine and fifth-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University. This will be the Owls second appearance in the title game since joining the conference in 1997.

Sixth-seeded Western Connecticut, which routed the third-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston, 87-52, Tuesday night to advance to the semifinals, finishes the season 15-12.

Degou connected on 6-of-12 attempts, including 2-of-4 three-point tries, for her 14 points. Senior Sarah Begnoche (Millville, Mass.) and freshman Alyssa Sapp (Hartford, Vt.) each had 12 points. Begnoche had 10 of her points in the second half, and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Senior Mallory Stevens (Seymour, Conn.) led the Western Connecticut scoring with seven points. She also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Leading 27-22 at the half thanks to 11 points from Sapp, who came off the bench, the Owls maintained a 5- to 9-point lead through the first nine minutes of the second half. The Owls used an 11-2 run over the next seven minutes to expand their five-point advantage (36-31) into a comfortable 14-point spread (47-33). Begnoche had the final six points for the Owls.

The Colonials responded with four straight points on a basket by sophomore Jennifer Kancler (Columbia, Conn.) and two free throws from junior Nia Harmon (Englewood, N.J.), but would get no closer in the final 3:35. Western Connecticut's comeback effort was hampered by its cold shooting (26.9 percent in the second half) and 12 turnovers.

In the opening half, both teams struggled with their shooting. Keene State shot 32 percent (9-for-28) while Western Connecticut hit on 33 percent (8-for-24). The Colonials grabbed an early 5-2 lead, but a seven-minute scoreless drought allowed the Owls to take an 11-5 lead midway through the half. After a three-pointer by freshman Katie Moffo (Southington, Conn.) broke the Colonials' scoreless stretch, the Owls, paced by Sapp's two three-pointers, pushed the lead to 11 (21-10).

A 5-0 Colonials' run over the final 1:43 of the half cut the margin to five at the break.

Keene State finished the game shooting 37.7 percent (20-for-53) from the floor. Western Connecticut, which had scored 87 points in each of the last two games, connected on just 30 percent (15 for 50) of its shots and committed 26 turnovers.  BOX SCORE

WESTCONN WOMEN HEADED TO LITTLE EAST FINAL FOUR

DANBURY, CT – The Western Connecticut State University women’s basketball teams will hit the road on Friday, February 23 for Little East Conference Tournament semifinals. The Colonials, 15-11, will face Keene State College in the first semifinal at University of Southern Maine’s Warren Hill Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. The top seeded and regular-season champion Huskies, 23-2, will tip off against fifth-seed Eastern Connecticut State University, 16-10, in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. in Gorham, ME.

The winner of the tournament earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament which begins on Wednesday, February 28. Southern Maine, the defending LEC Tournament champion, has captured 17 league titles.

The Colonials, the tournament’s sixth seed, are coming off an 87-52 upset over third-ranked UMass Boston on Tuesday in the quarterfinals. Southern Maine defeated UMass Dartmouth 97-59 in the quarterfinals while the Warriors upset fourth seeded Rhode Island College, 67-57 in its first-round meeting.

Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT), a sophomore forward posted a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds in the win over the Beacons. After a 10-point advantage at intermission, WestConn outscored UMass Boston, 49-24 in the second stanza.

The victory marked just the second time in LEC tournament history that a number six seed has defeated the number three seed. Keene State College defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 54-51, in 1999.

Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) and Alyssa McGhee (Hartford, CT) added 11 points apiece while Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) and Isabella Henry (Coram, NY) chipped in 10 points each in the victory.

On the season, WestConn’s balanced offensive attack features its only senior Mallory Stevens (Seymour, CT), Greenwood and Roberts averaging 9.8 points a contest. Roberts head the club with a 5.3 rebounding average. Greenwood runs the offense and leads the Little East Conference with 5.5 assists a game.

Moffo, one of the top rookies in the conference, follows at an 8.2 scoring clip and sophomore long-range specialist Jennifer Kancler (Columbia, CT) pours in 7.9 points per outing.

For Keene State, Sarah Begnoche made sure the Owls would advance to Friday’s semifinal. Keene State’s senior forward had 27 points and pulled down a career high 17 rebounds in Keene State’s 72-56 first-round win over Plymouth State University on Tuesday.

Keene State Coach Keith Boucher called Western Conn. a very dangerous team. “They might be the deepest and overall the most talented team in our conference,” he said. “They’re young like we are, but have given Southern Maine all they can handle with a pair of three-point losses. That’s an indication how good they are, so we have our work cut out for us.”

WestConn has not fared well against the LEC Final Four field with only one win in six regular-season meetings between Keene State, Southern Maine and Eastern Connecticut, but four of the five losses have been by five or fewer points including two three-point losses to the eighth ranked Huskies.

The Herchenroder layup was a part of a 12-5 game-closing run. Herchenroder had six of her collegiate-high 12 points during the spurt and sophomore guard Nicky Morey (Columbia/Windham HS) four. points and grabbing 15 rebounds to lead the fourth-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 57-54 Little East Conference win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.

The win was the 15th consecutive for the Huskies who improve to 19-1 overall and remain undefeated in the LEC at 10-0. The win also marked Southern Maine’s 72nd straight win over a conference opponent and 63rd consecutive home victory. Western Connecticut drops to 13-8 overall and evens out at 5-5 in the LEC.
