NICHOLS COLLEGE UPSETS WESTCONN, 70-65 IN ECAC DIVISION III
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS QUARTERFINALS

DANBURY, CT - (March 5) – The Nichols College women’s basketball  team, behind balanced scoring and a second half surge, upset Western Connecticut State University in the quarterfinals of the 2008 ECAC Division III New England Women’s Basketball Championship at Feldman Arena Wednesday night.

            The Bison, 21-7, advances to the semifinals and will face host (3) Fitchburg State College, which defeated (6) Western New England College, 80-55 on Wednesday.  Other quarterfinals action included; top seed (1) Coast Guard Academy rolling over (8) Maine Maritime, 74-47 and (4) Endicott squeaking by (5) Suffolk, 61-59.  Coast Guard, the tournament’s top seed, is unable to host the weekend’s semifinals and championship so the Rams, the highest remaining seed earn hosting duties for the two-day affair.

            Four players scored in double figures for Nichols with Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, CT) and Jessica Nelson (North Providence, RI) leading the way with 14 apiece.  MaryLynn Skarzenski (Hopelawn, NJ) and Michele Guerin (Chicopee, MA) chipped in 13 markers each.

            The Bison, seeded seventh in the eight-team tournament trailed by as many as seven points, 44-37, with 16:33 remaining in the second half.  They went on a 9-2 run and tied the game for sixth and final time just 3:30 later, 46-46 following a runner in the lane by Humbert.

            The lead changed hands 13 times prior to that point, but the Colonials, 20-7, could not draw any closer than a point on three separate occasions over the final 11:10.  WestConn pulled within one point on a jumper in the lane by Ally Greenwood (East Hartford) with 3:00 left, but would not get that close again.

            WestConn was led by sophomore Katie Moffo (Columbia, CT) who had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.  Greenwood and Jennifer Kancler (Columbia, CT) added 11 points each in the loss.  Junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) was the only other player in double figures with 10 points.

WestConn Women’s Basketball Earns
Second Seed in ECAC Tournament 

DANBURY, CT- (March 3, 2008) - The Western Connecticut State University women’s basketball team earned the second seed in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Championship.  The Colonials will play host to Nichols College at Feldman Arena on Wednesday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. 

          The Colonials (20-6) have won 17 of their last 21 games and earned the number three seed in the Little East Conference Tournament last week.  WestConn won its first-round game against Plymouth State University, 64-43, but was ousted by in-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University in the semi-finals, 58-46, on Friday in Gorham, Maine.  The Warriors went on to win the Little East Conference title with a 65-60 win over University of Southern Maine.

          Nichols College (20-7) has won 11 of its last 13 games dating back to January 23.  The Bison dropped a 62-51 decision or Western New England College in the second round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament last Thursday night.

          The Colonials are led by senior guard and captain Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) and junior forward Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) as they average 12.7 and 10.8 points per game, respectively.  Greenwood leads WestConn is most categories including assists (5.4 apg), field goals made (106), free throws made (117) and minutes per game (32.8).  Roberts lead the team with a 6.8 rebounding average.  Sophomore forward Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) and freshman Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) follow with a 9.8 scoring average.  Moffo is second on the team with 5.2 rebounds per game while Lee had a team-high 55 three pointers made. 

          The Bison are led by Curtia Humbert who is averaging 12.0 points per game and had been the leading scorer in 17 or 27 games this season.  Margaret Lilly and MaryLynn Skarzenski chip in 9.9 and 8.6 points a game, respectively.

          The winner of this first-round game will play the winner of Fitchburg State College vs. Western New England College.  Should the Colonials advance, they will host the ECAC New England Final Four at Feldman Arena.  Games times for the semifinals and championship, be it at WCSU, will be at 2 and 4 pm and 3 pm, respectively.  Coast Guard, the top seed, is unable to host this coming weekend, if it advances to the semifinals.

Warriors Advance to Little East Conference Championship Game

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Ashley McFetridge (Canton, Conn.) scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to a 58-46 victory over the third-seeded Western Connecticut State University Colonials in the first semi-final game of the 2008 Little East Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament being played at the Warren G. Hill Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Southern Maine.

The Warriors will take on University of Southern Maine, which defeated Keene State College, 55-34 in the other semifinal on Friday, in Saturday's LEC Championship game at 4 p.m.

The win was the seventh straight for the Warriors who improve to 23-4 on the season. The Colonials are 20-6 on the season and will wait until Monday to see if they receive one of eight berths into the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament.

McFetridge scored 14 of her 19 points in the first half to help Eastern Connecticut edge out to a 27-23 lead at halftime. The 6-foot-2 center was perfect in the opening 20 minutes converting all four of her shots from the floor and all six free throws.

The first half was nip and tuck befitting two teams that split their two-game regular season series. There were six lead changes and 10 ties in the half before the Warriors went out in front to stay. Two free throws by EC junior Nicky Morey (Columbia, Conn./Windham) snapped the last tie with 1:01 to go in the half, and Morey added a layup in the final seconds for the four-point halftime advantage.

Western Connecticut stayed within striking distance over the first 10 minutes of the second half getting as close as one (34-33) on a three-pointer from junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn.) with 12:36 to go.

Two free throws and a basket by EC senior Bridget Durette (Seymour, Conn.) ignited an 8-0 run that expanded the lead from five (42-37) to 13 (50-37) with 5:57 remaining. The Colonials missed five straight shots before rookie Karli Spera (Waterford, Conn.) hit a three-pointer to jump start a 7-0 run. That spurt got the Colonials back within six (50-44) with 3:22 to play.

Down the stretch, the Warriors converted 6-of-12 free throws and mixed in a layup from freshman Jessica Moriarty (East Haven, Conn.) while the Colonials could only counter with a basket from standout senior guard Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, Conn.).

For Eastern Connecticut, Morey finished with 10 points while Moriarty contributed eight points (all in the second half) and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Durette and senior Stephanie Smith (Penacook, N.H./Merrimack Valley) each had eight points.

On the other side of the ledger, Greenwood was the lone Colonial to reach double figures finishing with 13 points. She also handed out a game-high seven assists.

The Warriors made 38 percent (16 of 42) of their shots from the floor, but had a big edge at the charity stripe, converting 26 of 39 tries. The Colonials connected on just 33 percent (19 of 58) of their shots from the floor and went to the line just eight times.

WestConn Advances to LEC Tourney Second Round
With 64-43 Win Over Plymouth State

DANBURY, CT (Feb. 26) – Junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points for Western Connecticut State University as it ran past Plymouth State University, 64-43, to advance to the semi-final round of this year’s Little East Conference Tournament. Roberts also finished with nine rebounds and two blocked shots.

Also scoring in double figures for the Colonials were sophomore Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) who had 12 points and eight rebounds, and senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) who tallied 10 points to go with eight assists and six steals.  Freshman Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT) had a game-high 12 rebounds, while contributing nine points and five blocked shots.

Joy DePalo (Enfield, NH) led Plymouth State with nine points and Lauren Daniels (Concord, NH) grabbed 10 rebounds for the Panthers in a losing effort.

After taking a four-point lead into the locker room at intermission, WestConn came out and outscored the Panthers, 36-19 in the second stanza.

Plymouth State drew within one point, 28-27, when Daniels hit the front end of a two free throws, but the Colonials went on to score 18 of the game’s next 24 points. Senior Nia Harmon (Englewood, NJ) buried a lay in to give WestConn a 46-33 lead with 10:27 remaining in the game.

The Panthers, which end their season at 11-15, did not hit a field goal over the final 8:33 of the game and the Colonials would pull ahead by as many as 23 points down the stretch.

With tonight’s victory, WestConn advances to the LEC Tournament semi-finals where it will play Eastern Connecticut State University. The Warriors defeated UMass Boston, 75-68 on Tuesday. The other semi-final match pits host University of Southern Maine and Keene State College. The Huskies defeated UMass Dartmouth, 79-31 and the Owls upended Rhode Island College, 58-46 in the other LEC quarterfinal games.

Game times for the semi-finals at Warren Hill Gymnasium in Gorham, ME are set for 5:30 and 7:30 pm on Friday night. The Colonials will face the Warriors in the opener while USM will meet Keene State College in the nightcap.

The LEC Championship game remains at USM and is slated for a 4 p.m. tip off on Saturday, March 1. The winner of the Tournament Championship earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament which begins March 6.

2008 Little East Conference Tournament
WESTCONN WOMEN TO PLAY HOST TO PLYMOUTH STATE UNIVERSITY
IN LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND

DANBURY, CT - (Feb. 25) - The Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team will play host to Plymouth State University in the first round of the 2008 Little East Conference Tournament on Tuesday, February 26.  Game time, at Feldman Arena is slated for 7 p.m.
     The LEC Tournament continues on Friday and Saturday, February 29 and March 1 with the semifinals and championship games.  The highest remaining seed after Tuesday's quarterfinals will host the LEC Final Four.
     The winner of the LEC Tournament earns and automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championships which begin on Thursday, March 6.
     The Colonials, 19-5 overall and 11-3 in league action, dropped to the Tournament's third seed following the season-ending 56-54 loss to LEC regular-season champions University of Southern Maine.  They finished with an identical 11-3 mark with Eastern Connecticut State University.  The Warriors earned the second seed by virtue of their win over USM earlier this season.
     WestConn swept the season series with Plymouth State (11-14, 4-10).  WestConn defeated the Panthers, 76-65 at Feldman Arena back on December 8 then captured a 70-41 decision in upstate New Hampshire on February 2.
     WestConn's offense is generated by a mix of seasoned veterans and a sharp-shooting freshman. 
   Ally Greenwood (East Hartford) leads the team with a 12.8 scoring and 5.3 assist averages.  She recently became the 13th Colonial to score 1,000 points.
     Junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) follows with at an 11.0 scoring clip.  Roberts leads the team averaging 6.8 rebounds a contest.
     Freshman Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) is currently pouring in 10.3 points a game and has nailed a team-high 54 of 130 three-point attempts.
     Sophomore Katie Moffo (Columbia, CT) comes off the bench for the Colonials and is currently averaging 10.2 points and 4.4 rebounds.
Second Half Come Back Falls Short For WestConn in 56-54 Loss to Southern Maine

DANBURY, CT (Feb. 23) – With 19 seconds remaining, Southern Maine’s Becky Dixon (Pittston, ME) grabbed an offensive rebound and converted the put-back to give the Huskies a 56-54 victory over Western Connecticut State University in the final regular-season game for both teams. Southern Maine finishes as the regular-season champs in the Little East Conference and will be the #1 seed when the LEC tournament begins on Tuesday. WestConn will be seeded third.

Sophomore Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) was the only player for WestConn to score in double figures, finishing with 23 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) scored nine points to go with eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Freshman Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT) sparked a second-half comeback by the Colonials, scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds.

Angela Santa Fe (Derry, NH) led Southern Maine with 13 points and Stacey Kent (Northwood, NH) added 12. Becky Dixon finished the game with seven points and seven rebounds for the Huskies.

Southern Maine dominated the action early running out to a 15-5 lead in the game’s first five minutes. An Ally Greenwood layup closed the gap to 20-15 with seven minutes remaining in the half, but Southern Maine went to the locker room with a 30-23 lead at intermission. The Huskies’ defense held WestConn scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half, extending the lead to 35-23. At the 14:19 mark, Melissa Teel entered the game with WestConn trailing 37-27. Over the next two minutes, Teel grabbed four offensive and one defensive rebound, scored seven points, and helped WestConn close to within two points, 37-35. Southern Maine then answered with an 8-point run, but WestConn fought back to take a one-point lead (52-51) on a pair of free throws by Katie Moffo with 1:47 remaining. Both teams scored on their next possession, setting up the Huskies’ game-winning bucket by Dixon.

With today’s victory, Southern Maine raises its season record to 23-2 (13-1 LEC). WestConn falls to 19-5 (11-3 LEC).

The Colonials’ next game will be on Tuesday, February 26, when they host an opening-round game of this year’s Little East Conference tournament. Game time is slated for 7:00pm.

Providence, RI—Rhode Island College senior guard Sarah Coughlin (North Attleboro, MA) broke Jo-Ann D’Alessandro’s ’88 22-year old record for assists in a season, but the Anchorwomen fell, 59-45, to Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut Tuesday night at The Murray Center. Coughlin now has 141 assists on the season, breaking the previous mark of 137 established in 1985-86.

RIC loses its third-straight Little East Conference game, falling to 12-11 overall and 5-8 in league play. Western Connecticut has won eight of its last nine games and improves to 18-5 overall and 11-2 in league action.

The Anchorwomen fell behind, 5-0, in the early going, but went on a 17-9 run to take a 17-14 lead on a senior forward Sherri Heard’s (Coventry, RI) jump shot with 6:20 left in the first half. The Colonials responded with an 18-9 run to close out the first stanza and head into the locker room with a 32-26 lead.

WestConn opened the second half on a 14-2 run over the first 4:40 to build a 41-28 lead. The Anchorwomen would cut the Colonials’ advantage down to five points, 44-39, with 9:13 left in the game, but would not get closer.

Western Connecticut senior guard Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) was a force on both ends of the floor, contributing 11 points, five rebounds, eight steals, five assists and a block. Freshman guard Karli Spera (Waterford, CT) chipped in with 12 points, while junior forward Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) scored all 10 of her points in the second half en route to a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Heard paced the Anchorwomen attack with a game-high 14 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Jenn Knott (Narragansett, RI) added 11 points.

Tonight’s game marked the final regular season home game for both Coughlin and Heard, who were honored, along with their families, prior to the start of the game.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will close out the regular season at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m.   WestConn hosts University of Southern Maine on Senior Day.  Game time is also 1 p.m.

 Lee reached double figures in scoring in each game as Western Connecticut posted a pair of victories this past week. On Feb. 9, the freshman guard scored 12 points, on four triples, as the Colonials defeated conference foe UMass Boston. Earlier in the week, she netted 11 points against intra-state rival Trinity College. Lee averaged 11.5 points per game for the week.

DANBURY, CT (Feb. 9) – Senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) scored her 1000th career point and finished with 10 points for the game to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 63-35 victory over Little East Conference rival UMass Boston Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena. COLONIALS POST COMEBACK WIN OVER OWLS 53-55

KEENE, N.H. 2/16/08- Western Conn. State University over came a 14 point halftime deficit to post a come-from- behind 63-55 Little East Conference women’s basketball victory over Keene State at Spaulding Gym on Saturday.

            Fighting to hold onto the fourth spot and a home game in the LEC tournament, Keene State drops to 14-9 (6-6 LEC).  Winners of seven of its last eight games, Western Conn.  (18-4, 10-2 LEC) maintains its hold on second place in the LEC.

            Junior forward Jenn Kinney (Salem, N.H.) had a career high 17 points in a losing effort for the Owls. Sophomore forward Nicole Simmler (Oxford, Mass.) finished with 11 points and six rebounds.  Sophomore forward Jen Cleaveland (Newington, Conn.) pulled down a game high 10 rebounds.

            Junior forward Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn.) had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Western.  Senior guard Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, Conn.) scored 13 points and freshman guard Karli Spera (Waterford, Conn.) chipped in with 10 points.

            The Owls flew out to an early lead, building a 21-9 lead on a baseline jumper by Kinney midway in the first half. 

            The Colonials cut the lead to six (23-17) on a basket by Spera with 5:42 to play.

            Keene State outscored WCSU 13-5 the rest of the way with sophomore Alyssa Sapp (Hartford, Vt.) stealing the ball and going in for lay-up at the buzzer to give the Owls a 36-22 halftime lead. KSC, which played a strong defensive first half, also shot 54% from the field (15-28).

            A 9-0 Colonials spurt, capped off by a three-pointer by Spera cut the Owls lead to three points (40-37) at the 13:19 mark. WCSU tied the score on its next possession, a top of the key three-ball by Roberts.   Sophomore guard Rebecca McGee (Niskayuna, N.Y.) gave the Colonels their first lead 43-42 with a corner three-pointer at the 11:01 mark.  

            The Owls hurt themselves with several turnovers and missed free throws down the stretch. 

            Greenwood found sophomore forward Katie Moffo (Southington, Conn.) inside to put Western up 58-54 with 2:03 to play.  After a free throw by Kinney, Moffo drained a three-pointer to make it 61-55 with 1:35 to go.

            KSC, held to just 19 second half points, was held scoreless the rest of the way. The Owls hit just two of 19 shots behind the arc.

            Western shot 46% in the second half (13-28) and turned the ball over just three times.      

            Western swept the season series, winning 51-33 earlier in the season at Danbury.

            Both teams return to action on Tuesday.  Keene State hosts Eastern Conn. and UMass-Dartmouth travels to Rhode Island College for 5:30 p.m. contests.

 Warriors move to within a game of second place with victory over Western

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – (Tuesday - February 12) - Junior center Ashley McFetridge (Canton) and junior guard Nicky Morey (Columbia) combined for 27 points in the second half on 11-for-16 shooting to power the Eastern Connecticut State University women’s basketball team to a  65-61 Little East Conference win over Western Connecticut State University Tuesday night at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

Western (17-4, 9-2 little east) had a six-game winning streak ended – a streak which began with a 52-42 win over Eastern (18-4, 8-3 little east) three weeks ago. The Warriors moved to within a game of second place behind Western. Western trails conference leader University of Southern Maine, which improved to 10-1 with a 69-40 road win over Massachusetts Boston Tuesday night.

After scoring 22 points and grabbing 13 points in Saturday’s overtime win over Southern Maine, McFetridge again led all players in scoring and with 13 rebounds against Western. She was 9-for-13 from the floor. Morey scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half and McFetridge added 13 of the team’s 38-point second-half total. Morey was 6-for-9 in the second half, McFetridge 5-for-7.

Western led by ten points in the first half and by five at halftime before the Warriors surged back in the second half. In the second half, they canned 12 of 19 free throws and turned the ball over only twice. Down by five, Eastern scored eight straight points to take the lead for good -- McFetridge scoring six and Morey two in the run. McFetridge tied the score, then gave Eastern the lead for good with a pair of free throws with eight minutes left, 44-43. After Western missed the front end of a one-and-one, McFetridge hit a shot in the paint that made it 46-43. 

Senior point guard Sara Paradis (Bristol), who went scoreless in 30 minutes in this year’s earlier loss to Western, had seven points, six rbounds, five steals and three assists. Freshman guard Jessica Moriarty (East Haven) added 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.

All-conference senior guard Ally Greenwood (East Hartford) and sophomore forward Katie Moffo (Southington) led Western with 15 points each, Moffo playing 24 minutes off the bench. Junior forward Stacey Roberts (Windham) added 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting.

WestConn travels to Keene State College for a 1 p.m. tip this Saturday, February 16.  Eastern hosts Massachusetts Dartmouth in a conference game Saturday at 1 p.m.

Greenwood scores 1000th point for WestConn

Greenwood also grabbed four rebounds, handed out eight assists, and had two steals. 

With the victory, the Colonials, 17-3 overall and 9-1 in the Little East Conference, move into a tie for first place in the LEC.  They are deadlocked with University of Southern Maine (19-2 and 9-1 in the LEC), which dropped a 65-64 overtime decision to Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday.

Junior Alyssa McGhee (Hartford, CT) led all scorers with 13 points for WestConn, hitting three of four from beyond the 3-point line. Freshman Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) added four 3-pointers for the Colonials to finish with 12 points. Freshman Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT) grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots.

Norma Cumbee (Malden, MA) led UMass Boston with 12 points and Caroline Ashe (West Roxbury, MA) added nine. Myrna Tangar (Randolph, MA) grabbed eight rebounds in a losing effort for the Beacons.

Both teams traded baskets through the game’s first five minutes, but WestConn scored 10 unanswered points over the next six minutes to take a 15-8 lead with nine minutes remaining in the half. At the 11:24 mark, Ally Greenwood hit a layup that gave her 1,000 career points as a Colonial, prompting Coach Rybczyk to call a 30-second timeout while the WestConn fans showed their appreciation. The Colonials extended their lead as the first half came to a close and went to the locker room with a 31-17 lead at intermission. WestConn continued to pour on the offense in the second half, leading by as much as 29 points, before cruising to victory and a final score of 63-35.

UMass Boston falls to 7-11 and 2-7 in league action.

The Colonials travel to Eastern Connecticut State University for a Little East Conference matchup on Tuesday, February 12. Game time is slated for 5:30 pm.  The Beacons travel to University of Southern Maine to face the Huskies, also at 5:30 pm.

Ally Greenwood led Western Connecticut to a pair of Little East Conference victories this past week, averaging 16 points, 5.5 assists, 5.5 steals, and 5.0 rebounds per game. The East Hartford, Conn. point guard shot 60.0 percent from the floor (9-15) and an impressive 82.4 percent from the free-throw line (14-17). On Jan. 29, Greenwood posted a game-high 19 points and five steals, while handing out six assists against Rhode Island College. Four days later, she pumped in 13 points, registered six steals, and dished out five assists at Plymouth State.      

WESTERN CONNECTICUT'S ROBERTS TOO MUCH FOR TRINITY

Hartford, Conn. - Junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn.) scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State Colonials over the Trinity College Bantams 85-71 in women's basketball action at Ray Oosting Gymnasium tonight. The Colonials improve to 16-3 with the win while the Bantams fall to 9-10 (0-6, NESCAC).

Trinity, which led by as many as 12 points late in the first half, could not mount a comeback despite closing within two points later in the second half. All eyes were on Western senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, Conn.) who needed 20 points to collect her 1,000th career point, but she finished the game just three points shy with 17.

Sophomore Claire Arnstein (Hicksville, N.Y.) had a big night for the Bantams, scoring 22 points and dishing out nine assists. Sophomore Christine Card (Waterbury, Conn.) scored 11 points and junior Devon Kearns (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored 10 while first-year Rebecca Cohn (San Francisco, Calif.) hit three of her five shots and grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists for the Bantams.

The Colonials had five players in double figures, including Roberts and Greenwood, and first-year Heather Lee (Seymour, Conn.), sophomore Katie Moffo (Southington, Conn.), and junior Isabella Henry (Coram, N.Y.) who scored 11 apiece.

WestConn posts LEC win over Plymouth State in women’s basketball

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Western Connecticut State University took a double-digit lead less than seven minutes into the game Saturday afternoon and never looked back, posting a 70-41 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference women’s basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.

Freshman Heather Lee (Seymour, Conn.) led the Colonials, connecting on four three-point field goals and finishing with a game-high 16 points. Junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn.) added 14 points and senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, Conn.) chipped in with 13 for the winners.

WestConn won its fourth straight game and 12th in its last 13 outings to improve to 15-3 overall. The Colonials are 8-1 in conference play, just a game behind league-leading Southern Maine. PSU suffered its third straight setback and fell to 8-11 overall and 2-7 in the Little East.

Freshman Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) came off the bench and scored 14 points to lead the Panthers. Sophomore Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) had a solid effort for PSU, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds, scoring all nine points from the free throw line.

The Colonials never trailed in the game. They went ahead by 11 points (14-3) early on, and led by 18 points (23-5) at the midway mark of the first half. PSU got as close as 12 points (23-11) with 5:45 to play, but WestConn got the lead back up to 20 points at halftime (36-16). The visitors coasted home with the win in the second half.

The Panthers out-rebounded WestConn 39-35, but struggled in the shooting department, connecting on just 22 percent from the field.

PSU plays its next two game on the road, beginning Wednesday with a non-conference affair at Lyndon State College (5:30 p.m.) WestConn plays a non-conference tilt Tuesday at Trinity College (7:30 p.m.)

WestConn Runs Past Little East Rival Rhode Island College, 67-55

DANBURY, CT (Jan. 29) – Senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) scored a game-high 19 points, including a perfect nine for nine from the free-throw line, to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 67-55 victory over Little East Conference rival Rhode Island College Tuesday night at Feldman Arena. Greenwood also grabbed four rebounds, handed out a six assists, and had five steals.

Freshman Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT) also scored in double figures for the Colonials with 12 points and blocked three shots. Junior Isabella Henry (Coram, NY) had a game-high nine rebounds and added eight points for WestConn.

Sherri Heard (Coventry, RI) led Rhode Island College with 15 points and had six rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were Sarah Coughlin (North Attleboro, MA) with 11 points, Michelle McNamee (Cranston, RI) with 11 points, and Jennifer Knott (Narragansett, RI) who added 10 points losing effort for the Anchorwomen.

The game’s first half was hotly contested with the lead changing hands eight times, but WestConn went to the locker room at intermission with a 25-22 lead. The Colonials scored six unanswered points in the opening minute of the second half to stretch the lead to nine, and extended their advantage to 17 with seven minutes remaining in the game. Rhode Island College managed to cut the lead to nine with four minutes remaining, but the Colonials were perfect from the free-throw line all night, hitting four in the game’s final minute to make the final score 67-55.

With tonight’s victory, Western Connecticut State University raises its season record to 14-3 (7-1 in the LEC), while Rhode Island College falls to 9-8 (3-5 LEC).

The Colonials travel to Plymouth State for a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday, February 2. Game time is slated for 1:00pm.

WESTERN CONNECTICUT WOMEN HOLD ON TO DEFEAT UMASS DARTMOUTH, 61-58

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's basketball team tied the game at 53 with 4:24 left to play, erasing a 38-24 halftime deficit, but fell just short of victory as Western Connecticut State held on for a 61-58 win in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.

An 11-1 run by the Corsairs midway through the second half tied the game 53-53, but the Colonials came back with the next six points on back-to-back three pointers by freshman guard Heather Lee and junior guard Alyssa McGhee to make it 59-53, and held on for the victory. Freshman forward Kristin Penney (West Roxbury, MA/Fontbonne Academy) ignited the run with a three-pointer, and senior center Vasiliki Palantzas (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) and senior forward Lisa Satkevich (Quincy, MA/Fontbonne Academy) added consecutive layups.

Satkevich led UMass Dartmouth with 11 points, senior forward Lindsay Marsh (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern HS) contributed 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds, and freshman guard Kate Garabedian (Westerly, RI/Westerly HS) added nine points. Ally Greenwood led the Colonials with 11 points, and McGhee joined her in double figures with 10.

UMass Dartmouth, which was outrebounded in the first half, 20-13, came back in the second half with a 16-8 edge on the glass and outrebounded WCSU for the game, 29-28.

”We played our best defense of the year in the second half,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Mick Klitzner. “We did a halfway decent job of handling the ball, and we rebounded better. I thought Kristin did well coming off the bench, and (junior guard) Maddy (Malloy, Cranston, RI/ Bay View Academy) and (senior forward) Lindsay (Marsh, Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern HS) fought through some nagging injuries and played well.”

UMass Dartmouth fell to 4-14 and 0-7 in the LEC with the defeat, while WCSU improved to 13-3 and 6-1 in conference play with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host UMass Boston in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Tuesday evening, while Western Connecticut will host Rhode Island College Tuesday.

Greenwood Leads WestConn Past Little East Rival Eastern Connecticut, 52-42

DANBURY, CT (Jan. 22) – Senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) scored a game-high 18 points, including four from the free-throw line in the game’s final minute, to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 52-42 victory over Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday night at Feldman Arena. Greenwood also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out a game-high five assists.

Freshman Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) also scored in double figures with 10 points and led the Colonials in rebounds with nine. Sophomore Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) had a quiet night on offense, but shut down the interior passing lanes on defense, recorded four steals, and forced Eastern Connecticut to alter its early offensive strategy.

Ashley McFetridge (Canton, CT) led Eastern Connecticut with 16 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds. Nickey Morey (Columbia, CT) added 11 points and six rebounds in a losing effort for the Warriors.

WestConn led by as many as 12 points in the first half and went to the locker room at intermission with a 29-23 lead. The Colonials struck first in the second half, but Eastern Connecticut battled back to take a 34-32 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game. WestConn’s defense allowed only one point over the next nine minutes and Ally Greenwood hit all four free throw attempts in the game’s final minute to secure the 52-42 victory.

With tonight’s victory, Western Connecticut State University raises its season record to 12-3 (5-1 in the LEC), while Eastern Connecticut State University falls to 14-2 (4-2 LEC).

Huskies Extend Home Winning Streak to 77  with 68-56 Victory Over WestConn

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior guard Stacey Kent (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown Academy) and freshman guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) combined to score 46 points to lead the nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies women's basketball team to a 68-56 win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in Little East Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Warren Hill Gymnasium in Gorham, Maine.

The win was the sixth straight for Southern Maine and lifts its overall record to 14-1. USM remains undefeated in the Little East with a 5-0 mark. The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for Western Connecticut which dropped to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in conference action.

The win was the 77th straight at the Warren Hill Gymnasium for USM, moving it past in-state rival Bowdoin College (76 straight home wins) and into third place on the all-time NCAA Division III women's basketball list for consecutive home wins. Rust College holds the record at 88 straight home wins, followed by William Smith College with 80.

Kent matched her career-high with 28 points on an 8-for-19 effort from the floor and an 11-for-12 mark from the free throw line. She also grabbed eight rebounds. DeMillo established a new career high tossing in 18 points, including 16 in the second half as the Huskies broke open a close game.

Both teams struggled to find the basket in the first half, combining to make just 16 field goals. USM took a meager, two-point lead into the break after rallying from a 26-21 deficit with 3:20 to play. Southern Maine used a pair of free throws from senior forward Shannon Kynoch (South Burlington, Vt.), a traditional three-point play from Kent and an athletic lay-up in traffic from sophomore forward Becky Dixon (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner) to sneak into 28-26 lead. USM shot just 35.7 percent (10-for-28) from the floor in the opening stanza, while Western Connecticut made 6-of-19 (31.6 percent).

The game remained neck-and-neck in the opening stages of the second half as the lead changed hands three times and was tied four times in the first 10 minutes. The Huskies were able to gradually pull away down the stretch for the win.

Western Connecticut senior guard Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, Conn./Cromwell) single-handedly kept her team in the game notching 29 points, including 17 in the second half. 

Dixon finished with nine points and seven rebounds off of the bench, while Kynoch chipped in with six points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.) when it travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston for a Little East Conference game.  Western Connecticut hosts LEC rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).

Lee’s Threes Burry Lasell in WestConn’s 66-38 Victory

DANBURY, CT (Jan. 17) – Freshman Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) scored a game high 14 points, including four of five from beyond the three-point line, to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 66-38 victory over Lasell College Thursday night at Feldman Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for the Colonials were junior Isabella Henry (Coram, NY) who scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and sophomore Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) who also scored 11, pulled down seven rebounds, and blocked four shots. Freshman Mellisa Teel (Hamden, CT) blocked three shots and had five rebounds, including four consecutive offensive rebounds in a possession late in the second half.

Carla Zinno (Middlebury, CT), Katie Farr (Rindge, NH), and Christina DeLuca (Johnston, RI) each contributed eight points in a losing effort for Lasell.

WestConn’s defense held Lasell scoreless for the game’s first five minutes, helping the Colonials establish a 16-5 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the half and a 28-13 lead at intermission. Lasell opened the second half with a 9-2 run that cut the Colonial’s lead to eight, but when WestConn score the next 12 points Lasell was unable to mount another comeback.

WestConn Defense Shuts Down Keene State in 51-33 Victory

DANBURY, CT (Jan. 15) – Senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) scored a game high 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and handed out four assists to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 51-33 victory over Little East Conference rival Keene State Tuesday night at Feldman Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for the Colonials was freshman Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) who scored 14 points. Junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) dominated the boards pulling down a game high 12 rebounds, while junior Isabella Henry (Coram, NY) contributed eight points and eight rebounds for WestConn.

Kristin Degou (Newburyport, MA) and Alyssa Sapp (Hartford, VT) each scored 10 points to lead Keene State. Jenn Kinney (Salem, NH) pulled down 11 rebounds in a losing effort for the Owls.

Trailing by three with 4:30 remaining in the first half, the Colonials went on a 12-0 run to close out the half and take a 24-15 lead into the locker room at intermission. Keene State never found their shooting touch in the second half hitting 26% from the field for the game, 1-18 from beyond the 3-point line, and converting only 8 of 17 free throws.

With tonight’s victory, Western Connecticut State University raises their season record to 10-2 (4-0 in the LEC), while Keene State College falls to 9-5 (2-2 LEC).

Greenwood Hits 11 From The Line to Lead WestConn Over Lehman 78-57

DANBURY, CT (Jan. 8) – Senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) scored a game high 21 points, including 11 on 14 attempts from the free-throw line, to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 78-57 victory over Lehman College Tuesday night at Feldman Arena. Greenwood also contributed 11 assists and five steals while playing 37 of the game’s 40 minutes.

Also scoring in double figures for the Colonials were freshman Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) who scored 16 points, junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) who scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and junior Isabella Henry (Coram, NY) who added 10 points.

Sally Nnamani (Warwick, NY) led Lehman College with 20 points, while Tiara Carroll (Bronx, NY) added 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a losing effort for the Lightning.

Leading 13-7 at the 15:31 mark of the first half, the Colonials went on a 16-4 run over the game’s next five minutes to build the lead to 29-11 and went to the locker room at intermission with a comfortable 41-25 lead. Lehman trimmed the Colonial’s lead to 13 in the opening minutes of the second half, but WestConn pulled away for a 78-57 final score.

With tonight’s victory, Western Connecticut raises their season record to 8-2 (2-0 in the LEC), while Lehman College falls to 7-7.

WESTCONN ROLLS PAST ELMS TO START SECOND HALF OF SEASON, 92-40

DANBURY, CT (Jan. 6, 2008) – Junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) scored a game-high 13 points and four other players scored in double figures as the Western Connecticut State University women’s basketball team opened the second half of the season with a convincing 92-40 non-league victory over Elms College at Feldman Arena Sunday afternoon.

Roberts finished with a double-double after pulling down 12 rebounds for the Colonials. Isabella Henry (Coram, NY) grabbed a game-high 12 caroms for WestConn.

Also scoring in double figures for the Colonials were Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) and Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) with 12 points each and Jennifer Kancler (Columbia, CT) with 10 markers. Henry and Alyssa McGhee (Hartford, CT) added nine points apiece in the win.

WestConn, 7-2, did not show signs of rust despite being idle since December 8. It raced out to a 6-0 advantage in the opening minutes of play on back-to-back three pointers by Lee and Kancler and never looked back.

Elms College, 4-5, was led by Taeler Conner (Ayer, MA) who scored 11 points off the bench for the Blazers.

The Colonials hosts Lehman College this Tuesday. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m.

MOFFO LEADS WESTCONN TO 76-65 VICTORY OVER PLYMOUTH STATE

            DANBURY, CT (Dec. 8) – Sophomore Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) had 18 points and 7 rebounds to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 76-65 victory over Plymouth State University in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.     

            Also scoring in double figures for the Colonials were senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) who had 14 points to go with nine assists, and junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) who scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.  Junior Jennifer Kancler (Columbia, CT) returned to the Colonial line-up after missing the first seven games of the season with a wrist injury and scored seven points while dishing out three assists and grabbing three boards.

Down 13-7 at the 13:59 mark of the first half, the Colonials went on a 22-4 run to take a 14 point lead.  Plymouth State remained cold from the floor but scored 13 first-half points from the free-throw to make the score 34-28 at intermission.  Plymouth State score more than half of their second-half points at the line (20 of 37 points), but the Colonials pulled away in the game’s final 10 minutes to win by the score of 76-65.

Karly Gray (Southampton, MA) posted a double-double for Plymouth State scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.  Laura Kent (Bellingham, MA) and Annie Alosa (Concord, NH) also scored in double figures for the Panthers with 12 and 10 points respectively.

With tonight’s victory, WestConn raises their season record to 6-2 (2-0 in the LEC), while Plymouth State falls to 3-5 (0-2 LEC).

Lee led Western Connecticut State University to a 2-1 record this past week, including a 1-0 mark in the conference circuit. The freshman guard from Seymour, Conn. reached double digits in scoring in two of the three games, including 18 points against UMass Dartmouth on Dec. 1. She knocked down at least two 3-pointers in all three games, including four against the Corsairs. Lee averaged 12.3 points per game and 3.3 assists per game for the week.  

 
ROBERTS LEADS WESTCONN TO 65-45 VICTORY OVER VASSAR

DANBURY, CT (Dec. 6) – Junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) had 11 points and a game high 15 rebounds to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 65-45 victory over Vassar College on Thursday evening at Feldman Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for the Colonials was freshman Heather Lee (Seymore, CT) who led the Colonial attack with 16 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds and handing out five assists.  On Monday, Lee was named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week.

Western Connecticut went to the locker room with a 49-27 lead at intermission and managed to maintain a 20-point lead throughout the second half in spite of shooting just over 20 percent from the floor and scoring only 16 second half points. Vassar scored 18 points in the second half on 22 percent shooting.

Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME) scored the first 11 points of the game for Vassar and finished with a game high 20 points for the Brewers, while grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking six Colonial shots. Emma Carmichael (Brattleboro, VT) also had 12 rebounds for Vassar and contributed seven points.

With tonight’s victory, WestConn’s season record now stands at 5-2 (1-0 in the LEC), while Vassar falls to 2-4.

Western Connecticut opened the game with a 16-1 run and held UMass Dartmouth without a field goal until the 14:50 mark of the first half. The Colonials extended their lead to 26-5 at the 10:34 mark and went in to the locker room with a 39-18 lead at intermission. UMass Dartmouth cut the Colonial’s lead to 13 points with nine minutes remaining in the game, but WestConn went on a 16-2 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach.

Leading UMass Dartmouth in scoring was Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, MA) who had eight points to go with five rebounds. Vasiliki Palantzas (Brockton, MA) added six rebounds for the Corsairs.

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Katy Serafin (Carmel, N.Y.) tallied the 1,000th point and the 25th double double of her career with 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading Connecticut College (4-1) to a 56-52 triumph against Western Connecticut State University (3-2) in a game played at Luce Fieldhouse Thursday night. Serafin has amassed 1,003 points and ranks fifth on the Connecticut College all-time leader list with 649 rebounds. Connecticut College head coach Laura Hungerford was pleased with her senior’s achievement and the team’s performance in a 4-1 start in the month of November.

“This is a great individual feat for Katy but it is special for our whole program,” Hungerford stated. “Katie has been the go-to player for us over the past three years. It’s nice to see her reach this milestone in front of her home crowd.”

Lindsay Michel (West Haven, Conn.) poured in a game-high 20 points (7-for-10), adding five rebounds, five assists and four steals for the hosts. Kirsten Frazer (Pelham, N.Y.) chipped in with eight points.

Katie Moffo (Southington, Conn.) finished with 17 points and four rebounds for the Colonials. Freshman Heather Lee (Seymour, Conn.) contributed 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists for WCSU.

Connecticut College shot 6-for-6 from the foul line in the opening half and Frazer cashed in on two freebies from the charity stripe with two seconds left to put the host on top 26-25 at the intermission. With 5:47 remaining in regulation, Serafin reached 1,000th point barrier with a field goal that put the Camels on top 46-45. On the ensuing possession, the Colonials regained their one point advantage when Lee knocked down a pair of free throws.

But with 4:17 to play, Frazer put in two free throws for the hosts and Connecticut College led 48-47. Later on with 2:47 remaining, Michel dished to Frazer for a jumper that put the Camels on top by three, 52-49. The Colonials continued to hang around and cut the lead to two with 1:05 to go.

The visitors forced a Camel turnover with 40 seconds remaining and had the ball with an opportunity to tie the game. But a three-point conversion failed to reach the cylinder and Michel added four more points at the line to secure the victory. The Camels shot 86% from the foul line in the contest, connecting on 12-of-14 attempts.
