2006 Little East Conference Women’s Soccer Awards
WestConn's Catherine Nathans Named Offensive Player of the Year and Jenna Cappellieri
Named Co-Defensive Player of the Year...  Six Colonials Named To First Team
Joe Mingachos Named Coach of the Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Little East Conference announced its 2006 All-Conference teams and end-of-the season awards this afternoon after a vote by the Leagues eight coaches. Western Connecticut State University sophomore striker Catherine Nathans was unanimously selected as the Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate junior goalie Jenna Cappellieri earned Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Eastern Connecticut senior defender Michelle Read shared Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors.  WestConn's Joe Mingachos was tabbed the Coach of the Year. Keene State College freshman Molly Brunelle earned Rookie of the Year.

Nathans, a starter in all 21 matches, spearheaded a Colonials’ attacking third that ranks 11th in the nation in scoring offense (3.95), while leading the conference circuit in points (237), goals (83), and assists (71). A prolific scorer, she sits atop the Little East leaders in points (50) and goals (21). Nathans registered at least a point in all but three matches, including logging eight games with at least three points. She was named the Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 10.

Cappellieri backstopped a stifling Western Connecticut defense that posted a conference-low 10 goals allowed and a miniscule 0.47 goals against average. The three-time Defensive Player of the Week ranks 26th nationally in save percentage (0.89). Cappellieri is tied for second in the conference in shutouts (four), third in goals against average (0.63), and sixth in saves (69). She held her opposition scoreless for 381 minutes and 38 seconds, a streak that spans six matches between Sept. 28 and Oct. 11, 2006.

Read anchored a heralded Warriors defensive third that ranked second in the Little East in goals allowed (15), goals against average (0.73), and shutouts (10). Read is also making her first appearance on the All-Conference first-team. Eastern Connecticut limited its opposition to two or fewer goals in 19 of its 20 matches. A versatile player, she also contributed to the offensive rush, registering 15 points on seven goals and an assist.

Mingachos led the third-ranked Colonials to an overall record of 19-1-1, including a 7-0 mark in conference action. Under his direction, Western Connecticut defeated Keene State in the championship round of the Little East Tournament, earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Colonials are among the national leaders in scoring offense (3.95), save percentage (13th, .897), shutout percentage (15th, .67), and goals against average (20th, .047). Mingachos was also the 2005 Little East Women's Soccer Coach of the Year.

The 2006 Little East Conference Tournament champions, Western Connecticut placed a conference-high six student-athletes on the first-team. Joining Cappellieri and Nathans are senior midfielder Calie Carter, junior forward Kim Crayco, senior midfielder Jessica Gomes, and junior back Lindy Winchell.

Eastern Connecticut also placed six student-athletes on the conference teams, placing three each on the first and second-teams. The defensive tandem of sophomore Nicole Gaudette and junior Melissa Lambert share first-team honors with Read, while senior midfielder Carrie Fleischer, sophomore goalie Megan Gloster, and freshman midfielder Taylor MacDonald earned second-team accolades.

Rhode Island College received five spots on the All-Conference teams. Senior midfielder Caitlin Gavin and classmate forward Erika Haaland earned top-honors, while juniors Mallory Bileau, Gina Calenda, and Brittney Godbout represented the Anchorwomen on the second-team.

The 2006 Little East Tournament runners-up Keene State College placed junior back Jess Pepin and senior midfielder Tara Wagner both on the first-team, while Brunelle received second-team recognition.

Plymouth State University, the University of Massachusetts-Boston and Dartmouth each placed a student-athlete on the second-team.

Joe Mingachos Wins 150th Game

Joe Mingachos, a 1989 graduate of WestConn and a first-ballot WCSU Hall of Fame inductee in 1999, captured his 150th coaching victory (all at WestConn) in this year's 2-1 season-opening victory over Clark University.
For his career, Joe has an impressive .801 winning percentage (154-33-14) which is tops among all active coaches at WestConn.  His winning percentage is ranked among the best of all the Division III active women’s soccer coaches.
The 150th win came in just his 197th coached game.  He captured his 100th win, a 1-0 overtime victory over Stevens Tech on October 31, 2002, in only his 124th game.

NORA TOMLINSON-WEINTRAUB SCORES GAME WINNER WITH 2:09 REMAINING IN OVERTIME TO LIFT MIDDLEBURY IN NCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT

DANBURY, Conn., November 11, 2006—Middlebury freshman forward Nora Tomlinson-Weintraub (Burlingame, Calif.) tallied the game winner with 2:09 to play in overtime as Middlebury College defeated University of Scranton, 4-3, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament, hosted by Western Connecticut State University, Saturday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex in Danbury.

Middlebury earned a berth in this year’s NCAA Tournament by winning the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament and posting a 13-2-1 record on the season. The Royals earned an automatic bid as they were champions of the Freedom Conference and had a 12-6-2 record this season.

Just 8:30 into the first half the Panthers (14-4-1) got on the board first, 1-0, as senior midfielder Caitrin Abshere (Madison, Wis.) scored on an assist from fellow senior midfielder Laura Kwoh (Pittsburgh, Pa.). After even play for the next 35 minutes the Royals evened the score at 1-1. Scranton (12-7-2) freshman defender Beth Stephens sent a shot that was saved by Middlebury keeper Adele Plunkett, the ball was deflected out to the foot of junior defender Mary Beth Vogel (Havertown, Pa.) and Vogel put the ball away to tie the game with just 2:04 remaining in the half. Neither side would score in the final two minutes and the teams went into the break knotted at one goal apiece.

Less than three minutes into the second half the Royals had a great scoring chance but Middlebury sophomore keeper Adele Plunkett (Austin, Texas) came up with a huge save to, temporarily, keep the score at 1-1. With 40:57 to play, however, the Royals took the lead, 2-1, as senior forward Jessica Beha (Belvidere, N.J.) scored on a deflection after junior defender Kaitlin Baker (Hershey, Pa.) had a shot that was stopped by Plunkett. With 17:03 to play the Panthers erased the deficit as Tomlinson-Weintraub fired a rocket from 18 yards out that was deflected off Scranton freshman goalkeeper Desiree Dabaldo’s (Levittown, Pa.) hands and into the goal to make it a 2-2 game on an assist by Abshere.

With 11:17 to go in the game, the Royals generated a counter attack that resulted in Beha sending a shot towards the net that was deflected off a Middlebury defender and over the head of Plunkett to give Scranton a 3-2 lead. Just 27 seconds later the Panthers got the goal back as senior midfielder Kim Walker (Ridgewood, N.J.) sent a shot from 20 yards out that beat Dabaldo to tie the score once again, this time at 3-3, as the goal was assisted by Tomlinson-Winetraub with less than 10:50 left in regulation. Despite fervent effort in the last ten minutes, neither side could score, and it was a 3-3 game at the end of regulation.

With 2:09 to play in the first overtime period Tomlinson-Winetraub ended the game on a direct kick from 23 yards out to give the Panthers a 4-3 victory and send the Panthers to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Dabaldo stopped 16 shots for the Royals in the hard-fought loss while Plunkett came up with eight saves in victory.

WESTCONN DEFEATS WESTERN NEW ENGLAND,
2-0 TO ADVANCE IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

DANBURY, Conn., November 11, 2006 – Western Connecticut State University freshman midfielder Nicole Sieber (Newtown, Conn.) scored the game-winner in the 23rd minute, and later added an assist, as the #3 Colonials advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament with a 2-0 win over Western New England College Saturday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Western New England College entered tonight’s first-round match by virtue of automatic bid from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with a record 11-7-2. The Colonials, the number three team in the nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, enter the game via an automatic bid from the Little East Conference and a 19-1-1 record including 14 shutouts on the season.

After controlling the possession game for the first 20 minutes of play, WestConn (20-1-1) sophomore defender Heather Garrity (Rocky Hill, Conn.) crossed the ball to Sieber from 30 yards out. Sieber then shook off a Golden Bear (11-8-2) defender and fired a shot that deflected off WNEC senior goalkeeper Marisa Sullivan (Halesite, N.Y.) and landed just inside the right post of the net to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead with 21:15 remaining in the opening period. Despite continual pressure from the WestConn offense, including 17 total shots, Golden Bears prevented a second goal before the break and the score remained 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, the Colonials picked up right where they left off, dominating the possession game, throughout, as the stifling offense was just too strong for the Golden Bears. Less than two minutes into the second half, the Colonials tacked on a second goal as Sieber crossed the ball to the front of the net where junior forward Kim Crayco (Bolton, Conn.) was waiting to strike. Crayco sent the ball just over the hands of Sullivan, and struck the cross bar and fell just inside the line to put WCSU up 2-0 with 43:18 to play in the game. The Colonials continued to wear down the WNEC defense and peppered Sullivan with shots but could not get another tally and took the 2-0 victory.

Jenna Cappellieri (Stratford, Conn.) made two saves for WestConn while Sullivan made eight stops for the Golden Bears.

WestConn advances to play Middlebury College (Vt.), winners of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), Sunday at 6 p.m. (Nov. 12) at the Westside Athletic Complex on the WestConn campus.  The Panthers defeated University of Scranton, 4-3 with a goal by Nora Tomlinson-Weintraub with 2:09 remaining in the first overtime Saturday night.

CAITRIN ABSHERE NETS TWO GOALS TO LIFT MIDDLEBURY TO 3-2 VICTORY OVER
WESTCONN IN NCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT SECOND ROUND

DANBURY, Conn., November 12, 2006 — Caitrin Abshere (Madison, Wis.) scored two second-half goals to lift Middlebury College to a 3-2 victory over Western Connecticut State University in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament, hosted by Western Connecticut State University, Sunday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Abshere's first tally gave the Panthers, 15-2-1, a 2-1 lead at the 70th minute. She was able to jar the ball loose from the WestConn defense on the left side of the crease and boot the ball over Colonials keeper Jenna Cappellieri (Stratford, CT).

The lead did not last long as WestConn super sophomore Catherine Nathans (New Fairfield, CT) knotted the score at 2-2 with her 22nd goal of the season at the 74:18 mark. She received a long pass from freshman midfielder Nicole Sieber (Newtown, CT) down the middle of the pitch.

Abshere and Middlebury, which moves on to play The College of New Jersey in the Sectionals next weekend, retaliated just 22 seconds later after gathering another ball that deflected off the WestConn defense. It was her sixth goal of the season.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard first when senior midfielder Kim Walker (Ridgewood, N.J.) netted her fifth goal of the season off a direct kick from Erin Oliver (Essex Junction, VT) in the 18th minute of play.

WestConn evened the score, off a set piece, when Caitlin Boyle (Bethel, CT) lofted a pass into the center of the goalmouth and freshman forward Jessica Sperlazza (Wallingford, CT) headed it by Middlebury keeper Adele Plunkett (Austin, Texas) with 1:12 remaining before intermission.

Plunkett finished with 10 saves while Cappellieri turned away five shots for the Colonials.

The Colonials end their season at 20-2-1. It was the second time in school history that they won 20 games in a season. Tonight marked the third time they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Panthers will be making their second appearance in the Round of 16. They last made it that far in 2004. Amherst College will face Endicott College in the other Sectional pairing at the site to be determined late on Sunday.
