Ashley Prescott Named Defensive Player of the Year
Nicole Corbin, Jessica Gomes, Ashley Prescott and Ashley Griffin Named to First Team
Kim Crayco and Caitlin Boyle Honored on Second Team

Offensive Player of the Year — Liz Brunton, Senior, Forward, University of Southern Maine
Defensive Player of the Year — Ashley Prescott, Senior, Back, Western Connecticut State University
Rookie of the Year — Mindy Morneault, Freshman, Goalkeeper, University of Southern Maine
Coach of the Year — Joe Mingachos, Western Connecticut State University

PROVIDENCE, RI — University of Southern Maine senior forward Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, ME) receives Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors, Western Connecticut State University senior back Ashley Prescott (Norwalk, CT) is recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year, while Southern Maine freshman goalkeeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle Lake, ME) earns Rookie of the Year accolades and Head Coach Joe Mingachos of Western Connecticut is cited as the league’s Coach of the Year to highlight the league's annual list of award winners.
Brunton closes out her collegiate career with her second appearance on the LEC Post-Season All Star Team and first Offensive Player of the Year award. This fall, she currently leads the league in goals, with 14, and is second in points with 33. Brunton tallied one hat trick this season, had four multiple-goal games and accounted for five game-winning goals for the Huskies. She led the Huskies to a fourth-place finish in the LEC standings and a birth in the semi-finals of the LEC Tournament where they fell to eventual champion Eastern Connecticut, 2-1.
Prescott anchored a Western Connecticut defense which allowed just three goals in conference play and led the LEC in team goals against average, with a mark of 0.67, and shutouts, with eight. While Prescott helped lead the Colonials on the field with her defense, Mingachos led them off the field with his coaching. He guided the Colonials to an unbeaten LEC regular season, compiling a 5-0-2 record. At one point during the fall, Western Connecticut had a 16-game unbeaten streak which included consecutive wins of four, three and seven games. The second place finish in the LEC is the best finish since the 2001 Colonials went a perfect 7-0. This marks Mingachos’ second coach of the year honor as he won the award in 1999.
A two-time recipient of the league’s Rookie of the Week Award, Morneault was tied for the most shutouts by a goalkeeper in the LEC with five. She compiled a 9-6-1 record, a 1.10 goals against average and a .847 save percentage while leading the Huskies to a fourth place finish in the LEC. Of Morneault’s six losses this fall, four were decided by just one goal.
Along with Brunton, the All-Conference First Team forwards feature Western Connecticut senior Nicole Corbin (Clinton, CT) and Eastern Connecticut senior Caitlin Buzzell (Manchester, CT).
The First Team midfield includes Western Connecticut junior Jessica Gomes (Wallingford, CT), Eastern Connecticut senior Meghann Booth (Windsor Locks, CT), Keene State junior Breanne Lucey (Keene, NH) and Rhode Island College sophomore Krista MacKinnon (Exeter, RI).
Along with Prescott, the First Team defensive backfield showcases Southern Maine senior Stacy LeBlanc (Standish, ME), a pair from Keene State in senior Sarah Miller (Walpole, NH) and junior Allison Corso (Farmington, CT) followed by Western Connecticut goalkeeper Ashley Griffin (Newington, CT).
Earning Second Team All-Conference honors at forward are Eastern Connecticut senior Jenn Orme (Centereach, NY), Keene State junior Katie Stevens (Londonderry, NH) and Western Connecticut sophomore Kim Crayco (Bolton, CT).
The Second Team midfield features Eastern Connecticut junior Carrie Fleischer (Tolland, CT), Southern Maine senior Dianna Thibaudeau (Sanford, ME), Keene State junior Tara Wagner (Avon, CT) and Plymouth State junior Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, MA).
The Second Team defensive backs include a pair from Eastern Connecticut in senior Ashley Dynderski (North Branford, CT) and junior Melissa Lambert (Montville, CT), along with Plymouth State junior Ashley Frobey (Sandy Hook, CT), Western Connecticut sophomore Caitlin Boyle (Brookfield, CT) and Keene State senior goalkeeper Sarah Campbell (Auburn, MA).

2005 NCAA WOMEN’S SOCCER TOURNAMENT SECOND ROUND
Wheaton Advances to Fourth Successive Sweet 16 with 1-0 Win over Western Connecticut

NORTON, MA- Sophomore back Jenna Stiegler (Madison, WI/Middleton) posted her third game-winner of the season off an Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) corner kick in the 74th minute of play Sunday afternoon, lifting the Wheaton College women's soccer team past Western Connecticut State University, 1-0 in an NCAA Division III Tournament second round game played at Mirrione Stadium.

Wheaton, ranked 20th in the country and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), advances to its fourth straight Sweet 16 and will face Tufts University in next weekend's sectional semifinal round at a site to be determined. In stretching their unbeaten streak to 16 games, the Lyons are now 18-4-2 on the season while improving their tournament record to 10-5-1. The Colonials, who had entered today's game with wins or ties in 17 of their last 18 contests, conclude their season at 15-3-2.

Today's opening half saw Wheaton outshoot Western, 15-4, with Viscomi providing the Lyons with their first good scoring chance 10 minutes in, but her header was stopped by Colonial sophomore goalie Ashley Griffin (Newington, CT/Newington). Viscomi had a breakaway opportunity just six minutes later, but her shot from the right side of the box carried just left of the far post.

Western responded with a couple of offensive chances, including a one-on-one opportunity between Colonial junior Jessica Gomes (Wallingford, CT/Lyman Hall) and Wheaton sophomore keeper Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown). Gomes snuck behind the Lyon defense and got off a quick shot, but a surging Kronenberg came off her line and was able to make the stop. Sophomore Kari Guasco's (Danbury, CT/Danbury) left-footed shot sailed over the crossbar in another Western chance with 19:30 to play in the half.

The hosts controlled play the remainder of the half, which included a header from sophomore Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) that was saved, a shot off the crossbar from classmate Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross), another Konopka chance and fingertip save by the keeper, and a shot at the buzzer from senior Kate Miller (Williamstown, MA/Mount Greylock Regional) that was blocked by Griffin.

Wheaton carried its first-half momentum into the second stanza, holding a 12-5 shot advantage while keeping the Colonial offense at bay. Rabesa had multiple looks, but it was Stiegler's shot from the far post that made the difference. Viscomi's team-best 12th assist gave Stiegler the opportunity to surge forward and covert her header beyond the outstretched reach of Griffin.

The one goal proved to be enough, as Stiegler, senior Teresa LeBel (Middleton, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon), sophomore Erin Davis (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) and freshman Jamie Smith (Kensington, CT/Saint Paul Catholic) stymied the Western attack to help give Wheaton its 17th shutout of the season. Kronenberg had three saves and Griffin accounted for eight stops, as the Lyons finished the game with advantages of 27-9 in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks.

2005 NCAA WOMEN’S SOCCER TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND
Western Connecticut State Fends Off Endicott, 2-1 to Advance to Second Round

NORTON, MA- Western Connecticut State University captured a 2-0 lead with under 20 minutes to play and eventually held on for a 2-1 victory over Endicott College in an NCAA Tournament women’s soccer first round game Saturday afternoon at Wheaton College’s Mirrione Stadium. Western, which beat Endicott, 3-0 earlier in the season, advances to Sunday’s second round against host Wheaton at 1:00 p.m.

Undefeated in 17 of their last 18 games, the Colonials raised their overall record to 15-2-2. The Gulls, who had gone unbeaten in 16 of their previous 17 contests entering today’s game, finish the season at 15-4-1.

Following a scoreless opening half that saw Western record a pair of golden scoring opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the stanza, which included a goal that was disallowed at the buzzer due to an offsides call, the Colonials broke the stalemate in the 56th minute of play. Freshman Amy Corchard (Monroe, CT/Masuk) found junior Jessica Gomes (Wallingford, CT/Lyman Hall) streaking to the net down the middle of the field, as Gomes received the ball in stride, took a couple dribbles and buried her shot into the left corner of the net.

Western doubled its lead at 70:12, when senior Nicole Corbin (Clinton, CT/The Morgan School) sent a rifling shot from about 20 yards out. With her back to the goal towards the top left of the box, Corbin turned and delivered a perfectly-placed shot into the upper right corner of the net. Sophomore Paula McGinn (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) gave the Gulls hope with a left-footed, arcing shot that carried over the Colonial keeper and into the side netting with just under 11 minutes to play, but Endicott was unable to find the equalizer.

Colonial sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Griffin (Newington, CT/Newington) was credited with six saves, including five stops in the second half, to earn the victory, while Endicott junior keeper Tina Loguidice (Hyde Park, NY/F.D. Roosevelt) turned aside five shots in the loss. Western outshot the Gulls, 14-10 with a 4-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.

Western will face Wheaton for the second meeting this year and the first time in the postseason. The Colonials opened their home slate with a 2-0 loss to the Lyons on September 1. Wheaton holds a 6-1 series mark

veiw the entire 2005 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship bracket:

Despite dropping a 2-1 double-overtime decision to Keene State College last Friday in the semifinals of the Little East Conference Tournament Western Connecticut received a Pool C berth by the selection committee on Monday. The only other loss suffered by the Colonials came in the 2005 season opener to Wheaton, 2-0 on September 1.

The Colonials have one of top forward and midfielder combinations in the region with leading scorer Nicole Corbin (Clinton, Conn.) and Jessica Gomes (Wallingford, Conn.), respectively. Corbin, who hold nearly every offensive scoring record for game, season and career, lead WestConn with 11 goals and nine assists for 31 points. Gomes follows closely with 11 goals, five assists and 27 points. Kim Crayco (Bolton, Conn.) has chipped in seven goals, five assists and 19 points in her second season.

Defensively, WestConn has been riding the solid play of sophomore keeper Ashley Griffin (Newington, Conn.) who has started the last 12 games between the posts after Jenna Cappellieri (Stratford, Conn.) went down with an injury. On the season, Griffin has registered four shut outs and has an outstanding 0.64 goals-against average. She has made 47 saves in nearly 1,200 minutes.

With Griffin being forced to make just 47 saves in 15 games, the ball typically is turned away in the defensive third by strongholds Ashley Prescott (Norwalk, Conn.), Brittany Pellerin (Wallingford, Conn.), Heather Falzone (Barkhamsted, Conn.), Lindy Marie Winchell (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Caitlin Boyle (Brookfield, Conn.). The team has eight shut outs overall in 2005.

The Wheaton College women's soccer team has qualified for its sixth consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament.  Wheaton, which is ranked 18th nationally and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), received one of 19 at-large bids for the tournament after tying Springfield College, 1-1 in double overtime in Sunday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament title game before falling, 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout that determined the league champion and automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.

The NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Committee announced the field of 60 teams for the 2005 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship.

Thirty-seven conferences were awarded automatic qualification for the 2005 championship. Four teams were selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions, and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final nineteen berths were reserved for Pool C, which are institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that are not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams.

Four teams will receive first-round byes. Four two-team first-round matches will be played to determine the teams that advance to the second round to play the four teams that received a first-round bye. Twelve four-team sites will conduct first- and second-round play on the first weekend of the championship, November 11-12 or 12-13. Second-round winners will advance to one of four sectional sites November 18-19 or 19-20. Winners of the four sectionals will advance to the semifinals November 25-26. All games, except the semifinals and final, will be played on the campuses of competing institutions. Macpherson Stadium at Bryan Park in Greensboro, North Carolina will be the site of this year’s finals.

OVERTIME GOAL LIFTS KEENE STATE INTO LEC W-SOCCER FINAL
Keniston’s goal in the 107th minute carries third-seeded Owls past No. 2 seed Western

WILLIMANTIC, Conn.- Freshman midfielder Kathleen Keniston (Minneapolis, MN) scored her third goal of the season with 17 minutes gone in sudden-death overtime to lift third-seeded Keene State College to a 2-1 victory over second-seeded Western Connecticut State University in the semifinal round of the 2005 Little East Conference women’s soccer tournament Friday afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field on the Eastern Connecticut State University campus.

Defending champion Keene (11-5-3) has reached the championship match in all seven tournaments and will meet top-seeded Eastern Connecticut (11-5-2) in the final for the third straight year. Eastern downed fourth-seeded University of Southern Maine (11-7-1) earlier Friday in the first semifinal match. Eastern defeated Keene on penalty kicks to claim the 2003 title while Keene posted a 3-0 victory last fall. Keene also won the 2002 championship over Western Connecticut State University.

Ranked first in New England in the latest NSCAA/adidas Regional Poll, Western had received a first-round tournament bye while Keene had advanced with a 1-0 home overtime win over sixth-seeded Plymouth State University. The Owls have won five straight while Western had a seven-game winning and 18-game unbeaten (16-0-2) streak snapped. The loss was the first for Western since losing its season opener to Wheaton College (MA), 2-0.

Trailing 1-0, Western (14-2-2) tied the match when senior forward Nicole Corbin (Clinton, CT) scored on a breakaway eight minutes into the second half , but Keene chalked up the win when Keniston drove a sliding left-footer from the left of the box inside the far right post with less than four minutes left in the 20-minute sudden-death extra session.

Ranked fourth in New England, Western had received a first-round tournament bye while Keene had advanced with a 1-0 home overtime win over sixth-seeded Plymouth State University. The Owls have won five straight while Western had a seven-game winning and 18-game unbeaten (16-0-2) streak snapped. The loss was the first for Western since losing its season opener to Wheaton College (MA), 2-0.

Senior back Sarah Miller’s (Walpole, NH) first goal of the year had given Keene a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of play before Corbin tied the match in the second half. Miller had a takeaway at midfield and broke in alone on goal before firing a shot from the 12-yard mark past Western sophomore keeper Ashley Griffin (Newington, CT).

Keene has not lost since a 1-0 home decision to Eastern Connecticut Oct. 20.

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior midfielder Jessica Gomes (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) scored the only goal in the eighth minute of play to give the visiting Western Connecticut State University Colonials a 1-0 triumph over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's match Saturday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.

Western Connecticut, which had a 20-7 advantage in shots in the match, had a couple of other outstanding scoring chances. Junior Calie Carter (Lebanon, N.H.) hit the post to the left of Morneault in the 21st minute, and sophomore Kim Crayco (Bolton, Conn.) rang one off the crossbar in the 65th minute.

WPI WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO WESTERN CONN, 2-0
Worcester, MA – Behind two goals by Nicole Corbin, the Western Connecticut State University women’s soccer team defeated Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 2-0, tonight at WPI’s Alumni Field.
With the win, WCSU raised its record to 2-1, while WPI dropped to 1-2.
Except for maybe the first few minutes, the Colonials of WCSU were pretty much in control of this game. Western Connecticut outshot WPI, 21-9.
But it took nearly until halftime before WCSU was able to notch its first goal, a strange one at that. It’s difficult to score a goal without the ball crossing the line on the ground and/or without the ball hitting any part of the net, but that’s exactly what happened. Corbin, a senior forward from Clinton, CT, took a corner kick with less than a minute remaining in the half. The ball bounded dangerously close to the goal-line and took a backwards bounce, momentarily crossing the line in mid-air. WPI’s goalkeeper, senior Manda Otterman who was immense all night, grabbed the ball, but the linesman ruled the ball was within the net “by about a foot” -- and the goal counted with 21 seconds left in the half.
Otterman kept the Colonials at bay for most of the second half, but with 9:05 remaining Corbin broke loose along the left side, beating the All-Regional goalkeeper just inside the right post. Corbin was assisted by sophomore back Caitlin Boyle (Brookfield, CT) who made a long, smart pass to the senior.
Otterman was credited with 17 saves, while WCSU junior goalkeeper Jenna Cappellieri (Stratford, CT) was credited with one save.

WESTCONN TAKE HOME ECAC DIVISION III NEW ENGLAND WOMEN’S SOCCER TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP
WITH 4-2 WIN OVER BRANDEIS

WALTHAM, Mass. – The fourth-seeded Western Connecticut State University Colonials scored three second-half goals today to help post their second-straight upset, defeating host and second-seeded Brandeis University, 4-2, in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England women’s soccer tournament. Senior back Christie Gillis (Naugatuck, Conn.) was named tournament Most Outstanding Player.

Western Connecticut State (18-5-2), which knocked off top-seeded Eastern Connecticut on Thursday, opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Junior forward Nicole Corbin (Clinton, Conn.) scored her fifth goal of the tournament, taking advantage of confusion in the Judges’ defense. She drove the ball home from just inside the box for her 19th goal of the season.

Brandeis (16-5) answered just before halftime on a perfect cross from junior forward Lisa Kaplin (Armonk, N.Y.) to rookie Amy King (Merrimack, N.H.), who deposited her third goal of the season. The game entered the break tied, 1-1.

WCSU opened the second stanza with a flurry of activity. In the 51st minute, rookie forward Kim Crayco (Bolton, Conn.) got free on a chip ahead by sophomore Calie Carter (Lebanon, N.H.) and converted high to the left corner for her fourth goal of the season. The Colonials added to their lead in the 65th minute on sophomore midfielder Jessica Gomes’ (Wallingford, Conn.) 13th goal of the season. Crayco attacked the defense, drew a defender, and sent the ball to Gomes who one-touched it home for the goal.

The Judges recaptured momentum in the 79th minute when junior forward Lauren Gregor (Holliston, Mass.) blasted the ball from just beyond the box. It deflected off a WCSU defender and past the outstretched goalie to give Gregor her 13th tally of the season. The visitors answered just 55 seconds later, however, as junior Lia Pellegrino-Young (Hinesburg, Vt.) shook loose and fed Corbin for her second goal of the game and 20th of the season.

Western rookie Ashley Griffin (Newington, Conn.) made nine saves for the win, while Brandeis junior Natasha Pieciak (Three Rivers, Mass.) had five stops in the losing effort. With the win, Western Connecticut takes home its first ECAC women’s soccer crown. They also handed Brandeis their first non-conference loss of the season and just their second at Gordon Field.
