Fundraising

All student organizations are encouraged to supplement their Student Government Association allocation through fundraising.  All drives, raffles and sales held on campus must be sponsored by recognized student organizations.  The proceeds of such sales must be used for educational, charitable or philanthropic purposes.

General Policy on Solicitations and Sales

No individual may solicit donations or sell on campus for personal gain.  Use of University property for donations or sales is restricted to recognized student organizations, the University, or one of its departments, and the WCSU Foundation.  Clearance for all such sales by student organizations is to be received from the Student Life/Student Activities Office.  Sales will be limited to areas designated by the Student Life/Student Activities Office.

  1. Any organization may hold a sale for the purpose of raising funds for its treasury.  Clearance and approval must be received from the Student Life/Student Activities Office prior to the sale.
  2. Sales may be held for three consecutive days.  An organization may schedule up to two sales locations on the Midtown campus and one on the Westside campus on a given sales day.
  3. The Associate Director of Student Life/Student Activities will designate locations for sales.
  4. The student organization sponsoring the sale is responsible for maintenance and cleanliness during and after each sale.
  5. Failure to adhere to the above policy will result in revocation of sale privileges.  Any questions should be directed to the Student Life/Student Activities Office.  Back to top.

Food Sales

Student organizations are permitted to schedule food sales based on the guidelines above.  Student organizations MUST be aware of potential risks.  Should illness be attributed to the food sold, the organization and/or responsible individuals may be subject to legal action.   All food sales must clearly state which organization is sponsoring the sale, and that the food is not being served by WCSU Dining Services or Western Connecticut State University.

Most food sales consist of items that do not require heat or refrigeration.  These items include baked goods (cookies, cakes, pies, doughnuts, assorted pastry, special breads, sweet rolls, strudels and muffins), coffee, tea and other non alcoholic beverages, candy, and popcorn.  Any other item must have approval of the Student Life/Student Activities Office prior to sale.  In order to insure compliance with health regulations, baked goods must be individually wrapped or protected under a cover.  If not individually wrapped, the goods should be served with tongs or lifted from the container with waxed paper or a napkin.

Student organizations planning to sell perishable foods, e.g. barbeque fare, must meet with a staff member of the Student Life/Student Activities Office.  There is an increased health risk and potential liability with perishable foods.  All foods must be maintained at temperatures in accordance with the City of Danbury regulations and organizations are required to secure a one day food permit from the City of Danbury.  Requests to sponsor an event with perishable food must be made at least ten days in advance.  Organizations will be required to sign an agreement to follow specific food handling guidelines.  Appropriate food display and serving methods must be followed.  Back to top.

Raffles and Games of Chance

All raffles and games of chance shall be held in accordance with the laws of the State of Connecticut.  All raffles sponsored by student organizations must be approved by the Associate Director of Student Life/Student Activities .

Organizations must show what the prizes will be.  As a general rule alcoholic beverages may not be used as prizes since students who are under age would not be able to collect the prize.

For specific information concerning the printing of tickets and the collection of revenue, please refer to the Financial Policy section.  Back to top.
