Requesting a New Certificate in Lotus Notes

With Notes, the certificate issued to an account will expire after two years. Once expired, the account will be prohibited from accessing the Notes server until the certificate is renewed.

You will need to follow the below steps to request a new certificate. Please do this prior to your expiration date. If you go past your expiration date, you will not be able to access your e-mail. At that point, you will then need to contact University Computing by either calling the Help Desk (x78467), or sending an e-mail to Request_University_Computing@wcsu.edu.

Request a New Certificate

To request a new certificate, follow the instructions:

  • Under the File menu, select Security, then User Security
  • When prompted, enter your current Notes password and click OK

  • In the Security Dialog box, under Who You Are click the Renew button to continue

  • Click the Continue button in the Confirm Renewal dialog box to continue

  • In the To field, click the Address button and select " Account Administrators" from the WCSU Address Book and click the To button to place the name in the recipient field

  • The Subject will already be filled out
  • Click the Send button.

A mail message will be sent to the Account Administrators with the necessary information to issue a certificate renewal. The request will be processed and the new certificate will be mailed back to you (see instructions below).

Merging the Re-Certified ID File

Once the Account Administrators have processed the certification, a file will be mailed to you with a subject similar to this: "/WCSU has certified the ID belonging to Rebecca Diot/WCSU. The certificate can be merged into your ID file by using the Actions menu 'Accept Certificate...' option."

Follow the steps listed in the subject line to complete the process:

  • Open the mail message
  • Under the Actions menu, Select Accept Certificate
  • The rest of the work will be done automatically

If your ID file resides on more than one machine

If you have your ID file on more than one machine (e.g. a desktop and a laptop), open up your mail on each additional machine and repeat the Merging the Re-Certified ID File section.
