Western Connecticut State University is dedicated to helping student veterans achieve academic and personal success. Whether vets are transitioning back to campus after active duty or facing deployment during their course of study, the university wants to make this a smooth and seamless process.
Enrollment Management and the Division of Student Affairs currently
are working together to expand programs and services to our veteran
student population. The Coordinator of Veterans Affairs, which is a new
position, will report to the Associate Vice President for Enrollment
Services and certifies students for US Department of Veterans Affairs
(DVA) educational benefits; provides academic program advising for
veterans; and assures compliance with federal, state and college
directives in relation to veteran/dependent educational benefits.
Additionally, the coordinator provides support for all student veterans,
reservists, and National Guard members to ensure a smooth transition to
student life by assisting with issues such as financial aid, academic
preparedness, health and wellness, socialization issues, and
Until this position is filled, Nancy Barton, Director of Student Financial Services (203-837-8860), will be assisting with financial aid matters, and Isabel Carvalho, Director of the Advisement Center (203-837-8397), is available to assist with academic preparedness.
Within the Division of Student Affairs, Daryle Dennis, Assistant Dean of Students (203-837-8549), has agreed to be the advisor to our veterans. In this role, Mr. Dennis will be an on-campus resource and point of contact for our veterans. In addition to providing support, Mr. Dennis will be working with our veterans to promote and plan events and gather opportunities for our veterans, i.e. Veterans Day Celebration; Iraq War Vets Celebration; Wounded Warrior Program, etc. Additionally, Mr. Dennis will be working with Kathy Ierace, who is the current advisor to the Student Veterans Organization (203-837-8772), and with the Women's Auxiliary of Greater Danbury on student veteran efforts.
Finally, both the coordinator and advisor will establish and co-chair a Veterans Advisory Committee. This committee will replace the Veterans Task Force.
