Nursing major says WestConn helped her accomplish every goal

Najah Mahfoud grew up in a country where opportunities are limited and going to college is nearly an impossible dream. So when the 23-year-old WestConn senior became a U.S. citizen in February, she clearly realized how lucky she was to live in a place where opportunity is wherever you make it.

“I want to live here for the rest of my life,” said the 23-year-old Danbury resident. “I’m building my future here.” And that future includes a degree from WestConn. In May, Mahfoud will Now I’ve realized

Mahfoud was born in Lebanon and first moved to the United States with her family when she was a baby and returned home after five years. Shortly after the family returned, her father was killed at work in an accidental explosion. For the next 10 years, her mother raised Mahfoud and her brother and sister until the company she worked for shut down. Then the family was forced to make some serious decisions. There was no money for Mahfoud and her siblings to attend school and her mother weighed her options carefully before deciding to return to the U.S.
