Student uses scholarships to follow his dream

Ever since he was an eighth-grader at Bethel Middle School, James Heffner wanted to be a teacher. As a high school student, he volunteered as a teacher’s assistant at the middle school and eventually learned to correct papers and plan class lessons. When it came time for college, Heffner relied on the advice of the many teachers and advisers who had inspired him — and they all told him WestConn was the place for him.

Scholarships are important because they give the recipients more of an appreciation that others are investing in them to do well.

“They said Western has the best quality education program around — that’s what sold me,” said the 20-year-old secondary education major. “Western was the only school I applied to.”

Since coming to WCSU two years ago, Heffner has made himself a part of the campus community; he is the vice president of internal affairs of the Student Government Association, president and tournament director of the university’s Mock Trial Association and is vice president of the campus Rotaract. But, Heffner says, he wouldn’t be able to do all that he does without the help of scholarships and Western’s affordability.

Heffner is the recipient of a four-year $20,000 scholarship from the Danbury Rotary Club and mostly recently was awarded a $1,500 scholarship from Sodexho.
