Renga Sequences

Craft of Writing IV, Fall 2007

Introduction

In these renga sequences , team members wrote alternating haiku. The "gap" between each haiku is meant to be similar to the "gap" between the fragment and phrase within each haiku.

Mark Ferry & Jennifer Burks

Cars rolling in unison
night time sounds
grasp the city

dolls’ shadows
grow large then bend
headlights pass

children sleep – dream
milk in a bottle
whiskey in a glass

excitable
words uttered fade
flushed face

short gasps - captured breaths
crumpled sheets
words unspoken

unbearable noise
penetrates sleep
alarm clock

coffee brews
flowers on the table
breakfast alone

Ali Kass and Suzy Sousa

a blackened and silent sky
count the stars
infinity.

wind whistles
trees dance
ground covered with leaves.

wind blows leaves
wind blinds lives
a blustery day.

Couple shivers
zipped up coats
snow flakes drop.

each drop of frozen ice
unique
a pattern all snow's own

slushy snow on frozen ground
snowballs flying in mid-air
running red noses

flying stars
in cold non-oxygen
running away from themselves.

Jake Kara and Thomasina Murray

faded writing
dwindling grass
the tombstone leans

silent in the sun
the iron fence creeks
in the moon light

dew drops rest
upon willows
ever so gently

grey splotches hover
over floating black veils
brilliant flowers wilt

the sunset
braises the desert
as it surrenders

cracked, bloody windshield
three bad headaches
one not so lucky

a deer defeated
by circumstances
lies in the street
