The First-Year Peer Mentor program is seeking motivated and engaged student leaders to become Peer Mentors for the Fall 2023 semester!

What It Means to Be a Mentor  

Peer mentors are trained, upper-class students who serve as personal guides and role models for incoming first-year students. Your experience encompasses: 

  • Attending and assisting with the First-Year Experience course
  • Meeting 1-on-1 with a caseload of first-year students throughout the semester
  • Helping first-year students adjust to college life 
  • Encouraging getting involved on campus & connecting students to campus resources 
  • Modeling positive and successful academic behaviors 
  • Building lifelong relationships  
  • Providing accountability and encouragement for new students

Eligibility Requirements  

Peer mentors understand what it’s like to struggle and succeed in the first year of college.  Requirements include: 

  • Sophomore standing or 30 credits completed at WCSU 
  • 3.0 GPA or higher 
  • A faculty or staff recommendation
  • Positive outlook towards academics & university life 
  • Active involvement in the WCSU community 
  • Desire to help others succeed 

Time Expectations  

Peer mentors can expect 4-6 hours of weekly duties including attending one of the sections of the FYE course, individual student meetings, student outreach, planning and attending events for first-year students, staff meetings and check-ins with the program staff. Peer mentors complete 10-hours of training prior to the beginning of the semester.  

Benefits  

Mentors are eligible to become Certified Peer Educators through CRLA, the College Reading & Learning Association. This is a great opportunity to strengthen your leadership skills, enhance your résumé, and connect with the WCSU community.
