Without keeping accessibility in mind, we may inadvertently create inaccessible material. Accessibility of course content is a communal responsibility that allows equal access and full participation for all learners. Faculty members are encouraged to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/accessability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/06\/Accessibility-Checklist.docx\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"false\">Accessibility Checklist<\/a>\u00a0to review the accessibility of their courses. If material is found to be inaccessible, faculty members can review the resources within\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/accessability\/faculty\/accessible-course-material\/\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"false\">Creating Accessible Course Material<\/a>. Faculty members are also encouraged to review the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/accessability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/10\/CSCU-Accessibility-Checklist-for-Courses.pdf\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"false\" data-uw-pdf-doc=\"\">CSCU Accessibility Checklist for Courses.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Faculty members should also incorporate the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into their courses in order to promote accessibility. UDL within the realm of education generally refers to designing educational content and environments in a way that makes them useful to all people, regardless of individual characteristics such as gender, race or ethnicity, age, stature, or existing disabilities. UDL evolved from Accessible Design, a design process that addresses the needs of people with disabilities. UDL goes further by recognizing that there is a wide spectrum of human abilities, and by designing with diversity in mind, we can create things and places (either real or virtual) that will be easier for all people to use.<\/p>\n<p>UDL is a researched-based design to a course that allows for flexibility to meet the wide variety of learning needs within the classroom. UDL has three main principles for course design:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Multiple Means of Engagement<\/strong> \u2013 How many times does a student interact with the material? Are you buying into their own interests? The \u201cWhy\u201d of learning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multiple Means of Representation<\/strong> \u2013 Is your curriculum presented in a couple of different ways, or only in one mode? The \u201cWhat\u201d of learning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multiple Means of Action &amp; Expression<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Is there a choice on how they present the information learned in the course back to you? The \u201cHow\u201d of learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How do you incorporate UDL?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Know your students\u2019 strengths and weaknesses<\/li>\n<li>Use digital materials when possible<\/li>\n<li>Share content in a variety of ways<\/li>\n<li>Offer choices for how students demonstrate their knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Use an access statement<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sample Access Statement:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXP128131957 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\" data-uw-rm-lang=\"false\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXP128131957 BCX0\">I am committed to creating a course that is inclusive in its design.
