Stanley Lewis draws and paints on-site what he sees: his own backyard, a side street, a train station, his studio or kitchen. \u201cThe frenetic intensity he brings to capturing this hushed suburban landscape is deeply humbling\u201d, wrote Julian Keimer in Art inAmerica.\u00a0His recent shows at The New York Studio School and at Betty Cuningham Gallery in New York revealed his cut and assemble process. In both paintings and drawings, he cuts his materials, adds pieces, and piles up layers, resulting in textured, bas-relief surfaces.<\/p>\n

Lewis received his BA from Wesleyan University and his BFA and MFA from Yale University where he was a Danforth Fellow. In 2005, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has been a teacher and critic at many prestigious institutions, among them Kansas City Art Institute, American University, Smith College, Yale University, and The New York Studio School. He is represented by Betty Cuningham Gallery with work in numerous collections, including the National Academy Museum and The William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation.<\/p>\n
