{"id":1823,"date":"2021-02-01T06:04:24","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T06:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/biology\/?page_id=1823"},"modified":"2021-02-01T06:24:22","modified_gmt":"2021-02-01T06:24:22","slug":"surf-jasmine-grey","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/biology\/surf\/surf-jasmine-grey\/","title":{"rendered":"SURF &#8211; Jasmine Grey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">JASMINE GREY, SURF 2018<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Mentor: Dr. Hannah Reynolds<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The research project Dr. Hannah Reynolds and I worked on this summer was developing a sensitive and inexpensive method to detect the fungus that causes White Nose Syndrome in bats in the northeastern region of the United States. The method\u2019s purpose is to aid in bat conservation efforts, which will be beneficial for the agricultural industry. We are currently working on improving the design of the method and hopefully we will soon have positive results.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\">My reason for pursuing this biological research opportunity is to make a difference in the world. The success of this project could save the lives of millions of bats which is great for the bats sake, but also for our agricultural industry. Bats consume many insects and save the agriculture industry billions of dollars from lower insecticide use. This project will assist me in reaching my goal of attaining a PhD in a field in microbiology. Grades are important, but they aren&#8217;t everything. Gaining research experience will separate me from the crowd.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\">Dr. Reynolds has been a huge supporter in my interest in research. She was my research mentor this past semester on a different project and helped me every step of the way.
