This project allowed me to advance my research skillset and gain hands on experience working with conservation biologists. However, this research project was much more than just the opportunity for me to gain new skills. There are five species of sea turtles in Long Island and all of them are either threatened or endangered. I can confidently say I contributed new information to the current, ongoing research to preserve sea turtle populations. With this project, I hope to increase the understanding of sea turtles in Long Island.
I’m thankful for Dr. Frank Dye for sparking my interest in biology. After having him for a professor, I knew I wanted to go into research and eventually teach biology as well. I am also appreciative of Dr. Rayda Krell who has supported my interest in research and helped me develop my scientific writing voice. Lastly, I thank Dr. Pinou for her patience and support. I didn’t have much direction until I had Dr. Pinou for a professor. She reinforced my academic interest in biology and guided me towards applying for the SURF program. I’m very grateful to have had Dr. Pinou to challenge me to become a better biologist.

Return to SURF Fellows

KAYLA DEGUZMAN, SURF 2018 Mentor: Dr. Theodora Pinou I chose to pursue this research opportunity because I see the importance in the continuous need for conservation biology.
