He earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland, and a Ph.D. in Cell, Molecular, &amp; Developmental Biology, with a subspecialty in Genetics, from Indiana University where his focus was on plasmid DNA replication control. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University, where he explored transcription control in Drosophila.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RESEARCH INTERESTS<\/strong><br \/>\nSince arriving at Western Connecticut State University, my research has focused on investigating species in the environment using DNA technologies. By employing DNA amplification, sequencing, and DNA fingerprinting, my lab uses genetic markers to identify and track various environmental microbes and invasive species in regional waterways. Currently, I am investigating toxic cyanobacterial blooms by screening for toxin-producing genes and assaying for cyanotoxins in water samples collected from regional waterways. I also continue to monitor the movement of the invasive species zebra mussel in local waterways. I collaborate with the Candlewood Lake Authority (CLA) and the Connecticut Dept. of Energy &amp; Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) on regional projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SURF PRIMARY SETTING<\/strong><br \/>\nLaboratory and field work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED DURING FELLOWSHIP<\/strong><br \/>\nThe SURF fellow will learn field sampling; DNA techniques (DNA isolation, PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, sequencing); microscopy &amp; fluorometric analysis; ELISA assays; data collection and analysis; discussion of primary literature; and presentation of data in written and oral formats.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SKILLS REQUIRED TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A FELLOWSHIP IN THIS LAB<\/strong><br \/>\nThe SURF fellow should possess excellent manual dexterity; excellent attention to detail and cleanliness; familiarity with micropipetting and some basic DNA techniques; excellent written and oral communication skills; and familiarity with Microsoft
