Military: Skills and Resumes

Skills and Résumés:

You have intrinsic military skills and values that are very important to highlight in your résumé. Start by reviewing the list below and note which skills apply to you. Note that the top seven skills are EXACTLY what employers are looking for, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).  Perhaps there are additional skills or values that you have and are not listed. The Profile section of your résumé describes your key strengths, skills, and accomplishments. Here is where you highlight these intrinsic military skills. Also, when describing your various positions in the Experience section of your résumé and the results and accomplishments achieved, these skills again play a part in the description.

There are also some skills and/or tasks that you have performed that you do not want to include on your résumé or in interviews. They might provide too graphic a picture of the horror side of war and military experiences and thereby frighten civilian employers. Always play your aces and the best you have to offer.

Transferable Skills:

Review your military experience and training and translate into civilian or business terminology. There are several websites below under Resumes that will help in this translation. Enter your MOS/MOC, Rate, AFSC, title, or designator and your civilian equivalent experiences will be suggested. This can also help you choose your next career besides being used in your resume and interviews to communicate to a civilian audience.

Now for the hard part. Do not under estimate the difficulty you will encounter in creating your civilian résumé without the technical military vocabulary you have been accustomed to using for both your experience and your training. Also remember not to use military abbreviations or acronyms which civilians will not understand, even if you spell them out. Try to paraphrase using standard English words.

Translating your military experience, and training, into civilian language for your résumé is an absolute requirement. Here are websites that can assist you:
